The only thing between the RB1 kit and the portable kit's pads are 1.) Those black coverings are silencers I bought from an online source. and 2.) the strips of velcro......that's it.
i just bouth a rock band 1 drum set...ppl are telling they are cheap and will break...by puttin the portable kit on will it maybe make it last longer or something??
That sucks, I wish I could offer better advice but you will have to buy a new set. They're only $30 or $40 I think. It could just be a fluke with your set because mine is still working excellent after 6 months of regular use.
what broke? One of the pads from the portable kit? If that's what broke, I can only recommend you buy a new portable kit since they don't sell individual pads. Did I answer your question?
Hey, i saw your vid as i was wanting a rb1 kit (cnt get rb2 :(...long story) and was thinking of doing all the mods to it, sock mod, coin mod, silencer pad etc. but the madcatz kit has made me think. how much better are they when compared to the default kit? i was thinking of doing what u did in the vid w/ a good pedal, and silencers. would the silencers effect the sensitvity? what would be best? sorry if i confused you :) Thanks
well, the kit comes with those rubber head drum sticks. When used with the prtbl kit, they're fairly quiet compared to other kits with wooden sticks. I would recommend you get the rb1 kit, attach the prtbl kit as I show in the video and see what you think. Also, I bought the "Rock Pedal" which is similar in price to other premium pedals----$75. It does work with this kit and combined together, enables you to play much much better.
If you aren't satisfied with the sound this creates, I guess you can do the sock or coin method....whatever you think will work however I haven't tried any other method besides what you see in the video.
I wouldn't recommend using the silencer pads though, I'm not sure how it would affect the sensitivity of the pads, I would assume it would hamper your ability to play.
I bought these for a friend to play RB & DTXMania on (I have the Ions). When I tested them out, I couldn't believe how responsive they were. Madcatz has really turned their reputation around.
when i get a chance i'll do a review for these, which should include an update to my double-bass issues. I have done some changes to the rock band drum set to make it easier. I have to agree these are perfect in sensitivity and performance. I'm still getting used to the slight rebound though.
There aren't any "silencers" included however, if you use the rubber tip drum sticks with this kit, there is considerably less noise created than the original Rock Band drum kit used with wooden sticks.
haha i just taped my portable set onto my old RB1 set. and i use a sock mod too, it quiets the sound as the sticks from the portable set box are too heavy and unreliable
yeah, send me a friend request...if you didn't finish the video, my Gamertag is "Grundel Cake"
I mainly prefer band quickplay but if you want to play head to head, I must inform you that I only play against humble opponents. You'll never hear me complain about losing and I don't trash talk, so I expect the same of my opponents. I'm on at random times since my work schedule bounces me around on different shifts but I'm on almost everyday.
I don't mean to be rude but your posts make no sense. What do you mean by "can I get some gameplay?" Are you asking if you want to play together? My Gamertag is listed at the end of the video. As for your second post, please clarify because I'm not going to attempt to guess.
They have excellent rebound....before I started using this, I could not beat Everlong on expert. The excellent rebound enabled me to get the rhythm required for that song.
I don't quite understand what you mean. I didn't remove any parts from the RB 1 kit or the portable kit. I just stuck one side of the velcro to the RB1 kit and the other velcro side to the portable kit.
You can pull the pads off of the drumset and there will be a wire connected to the pad and the drumset. So what I'm asking is can you take the the wire out, throw the broken pad away and just velcro the portable pads to where the old pads used to be?
Yeah, I don't see why not. I don't really have the technical know-how to do that without screwing something up, but I haven't tried that. Let me know if it works.
Because I have never used a RB 2 kit. This mod is really intended for a RB 1 kit that doesn't perform to standards. However, if your RB 2 kit doesn't function correctly (i.e. sensors don't register hit) then this mod is compatable with the RB 2 kit.
thank you, as you may see in the comment posted below, I am willing to concede that I'm not the FIRST person to do this but I appreciate the credit given.
I see you added your portable drum kit to an older kit but your video does not show how you attached the two together. Our ideas may be similar, but our videos show two entirely different things. I don't mind if you claim this idea, however, this video and method shown are original.
I guess I should elaborate. Velcro has two sides to it...the rough side and the smooth side. Put one side on your RB drum kit and the other on your portable drum kit...then the two stick together and can be removed if you plan on making your portable drum kit "portable."
The hit recognition system is flawless...not once since I've started using this have I missed a note due to hitting the pad too hard or too soft.
I did this exact thing, but I used double-sided tape to tape onto the existing tape on my RB1 drums. Also the pads work great, better than any kit I've played on.
Thanks for the reply. I ended up buying the Portable Rockband drum kit anyway. Even if the kick pedal isn't as good as the default one, the extreme portability of this kit definitely makes it a lot less bothersome to drag around than the official drum set. :)
I had a similar idea, but my idea was to move the red pad to the front-center of the kit since that seems to be the arrangement most drummers use for their snare placement.
P.S. How would you rate the bass pedal? I was thinking the portable drum kit pedal might be easier on my legs since I'm not a drummer, so my legs start aching after a few songs; that's even with me trying the "hold pedal down and lift to hit" method. :)
Since I prefer the original bass pedal, I would rate the portable drum kit pedal a 4/10. It lacks the 45 degree angle that I've been accustomed to. Your foot basically lays flat and the other big problem....there's nothing to prevent it from sliding around....even on carpet. So after 30 seconds or so playing any typical song on expert drums, you'll find your leg about 3 feet away in the wrong direction of your drum kit.

Coupla questions, I havent bought the velcro but did you attach it to the original rb1 pad? And how do you attach it to the surface?
Also, do you know how the hit recognition system works with this kit?
Im interesting in taking out the sensors and putting them in a real drum kit.
liltimmy21 3 years ago

Thanks for the reply. I ended up buying the Portable Rockband drum kit anyway. Even if the kick pedal isn't as good as the default one, the extreme portability of this kit definitely makes it a lot less bothersome to drag around than the official drum set.
