Armstrong's LLTV crash was not his fault, so there's no reason it should have shaken his confidence in doing the real thing.
This is NOT a 'prototype' of the Lunar Module, it was the Lunar Landing Research (or Test) Vehicle, an entirely different beast. They had almost nothing in common. The LM (not LEM) was designed to land on and ascent from the moon, in vacuum, in 1/6g. The other was designed to fly above the earth, in air and in 1g, and *behave* like the LM while flying on the moon. They used entirely different propulsion systems. You can even tell by looking that they were entirely different machines!

This was NOT a prototype luna module. They were built to simulate the module and test avionics. Part of the simulations would have been to take these machines to the very limit of their performance so that the flight characteristics of the Luna module could be accurately calculated as well as none recoverable parameters.
They were brave men that did this work, pushing the limits so close to the ground. .........something lost on the uploader of this video.

The Russians would have been listening very carefully and there was no encryption of the transmissions, in fact they shut down a probe they had on the moon to avoid corrupting transmissions from the Apollo lander.
Not true. In the late 50s they were well ahead of the US in tracking probes to the moon. When they sent up Luna 1 the west did not beleive it existed. When they sent up Luna 2 they informed Jodrell bank of the transmission frequencies and details of the trajectory so that Jodrell could independently verify the mission. Jodrell were requested by the Soviets to verify missions to the rest of the world on a number of occassions throughout the 60s.

I beleive there was a growing co-operation between the US and USSR long before Apollo 11. Doves on both sides were using the space race to cool tensions and make agreements that would reduce the risks of accidental missile launches. A small part of the deal was shareing data from space exploration and that included NASA handing over substantial Luna rock samples. Something the hoaxies also forget as the Russians had small samples already of their own.

The serious errors in this video start with the title. This was not a prototype of the LM. It was a trainer that behaved on the earth as the LM did during the landing phase on the moon. Space flight is hazardous, but not every flight ends in tragedy. In fact, most of them don't. What possible rational reason would you have for connecting Challenger to Apollo?

A suborbital lob to shuttle altitude takes only 4% of the energy required to stay in orbit. Escaping from the earth entirely (and going to the moon) takes only twice the energy of the lowest possible orbit, not thousands of times.

NASA clearly showed in their apollo 11 screen info that the moon landing happened on the 20th GMT, greenwich mean time, wich it may or may not the 20th in the US!

You really ought to do some research Mr. Dan, find out what you are talking about. It was Armstrong's 21st flight in the LLTV, and the cause of the crash was found to be loss of Helium pressure in the attitude control system. Nothing to do with the LM WHATSOEVER.

@NASAvsPETE Armstrong's LLTV accident was on May 6, 1968, over a year before he flew on Apollo 11. Despite the hazards, all the Apollo commanders insisted on flying the LLTVs; they said that nothing else gave them the realistic practice they needed for their first and only real lunar landings.
Armstrong's LLTV crash was not his fault, so there's no reason it should have shaken his confidence in doing the real thing.

This is NOT a 'prototype' of the Lunar Module, it was the Lunar Landing Research (or Test) Vehicle, an entirely different beast. They had almost nothing in common. The LM (not LEM) was designed to land on and ascent from the moon, in vacuum, in 1/6g. The other was designed to fly above the earth, in air and in 1g, and *behave* like the LM while flying on the moon. They used entirely different propulsion systems. You can even tell by looking that they were entirely different machines!

Thank God they didn't try to go to the moon. Suicide missions are un-American. Important issue- how did 5 of 7 Surveyor landers get down to the moon's surface in one piece? Radar and computers? The lunar sand-box studio was already being beta-tested in May of 66. By 76 they had a nice reddish-orange set for Viking. You are being played for chumps.

@hozayamz Yup, 5 of 7 Surveyors landed with radar and primitive computers. They took their chances with boulders and craters, which may be why two failed. A human pilot with eyes and a brain could see where he was going, so all six Apollo landing attempts succeeded.
In some ways the job is still easier with a human pilot, as the computer vision problem is far from solved.
Do you accept that Surveyor III was really on the moon? If so, why not Apollo 12?

I have a real problem with rockets landing on their feet, automatically or human controlled. I think all the surfaces we have seen are studio mock-ups. Surveyor's ballistic trajectory and rapid deceleration are pure fantasy. The Apollo 12 set just had an additional prop that tied some lies together nicely.

This was NOT a prototype luna module. They were built to simulate the module and test avionics. Part of the simulations would have been to take these machines to the very limit of their performance so that the flight characteristics of the Luna module could be accurately calculated as well as none recoverable parameters.
They were brave men that did this work, pushing the limits so close to the ground. .........something lost on the uploader of this video.

Also those hoaxies never look at the wider picture. The landings took place at the height of the cold war when both sides feared nuclear attack. Both were capable of tracking even small spacecraft and predicting trajectories. The Russians would have been listening very carefully and there was no encryption of the transmissions, in fact they shut down a probe they had on the moon to avoid corrupting transmissions from the Apollo lander.

Not true. In the late 50s they were well ahead of the US in tracking probes to the moon. When they sent up Luna 1 the west did not beleive it existed. When they sent up Luna 2 they informed Jodrell bank of the transmission frequencies and details of the trajectory so that Jodrell could independently verify the mission. Jodrell were requested by the Soviets to verify missions to the rest of the world on a number of occassions throughout the 60s.

I beleive there was a growing co-operation between the US and USSR long before Apollo 11. Doves on both sides were using the space race to cool tensions and make agreements that would reduce the risks of accidental missile launches. A small part of the deal was shareing data from space exploration and that included NASA handing over substantial Luna rock samples. Something the hoaxies also forget as the Russians had small samples already of their own.

Yes, the Russians and Americans exchanged lunar samples; that made a great deal of scientific sense. The Russians certainly agree we went to the moon.

Wheat? Pitty they do not do a bit of research on the commodeties market of the time. Russia was a major exporter of heavy oil and still is along with a lot of other things. Wheat was traded not given away and, despite the cold war, a lot of trade was going on. On the high tech side they were trading on some space technologies that were not relevant to missiles such as materials to make space suits and a large number of patents (so they could export products to the west)

Lunar orbit rendezvous kept the total weight down, and they carried enough propellant to make it to the moon and back. The serious errors in this video start with the title. This was not a prototype of the LM. It was a trainer that behaved on the earth as the LM did during the landing phase on the moon. Its design and operation were otherwise totally different. Nevertheless, astronauts flew it successfully hundreds of times in training.

@wen790 But they usually do it, right? You obviously have some pretty basic misconceptions about space flight. Altitude isn't nearly as important as VELOCITY. A suborbital lob to shuttle altitude takes only 4% of the energy required to stay in orbit. Escaping from the earth entirely (and going to the moon) takes only twice the energy of the lowest possible orbit, not thousands of times.

They really tried hard to make it realistic, and it's the best to date, but I spotted numerous errors and giveaways that it was filmed on earth. Not as many as in '2001' by Kubrick, the guy the fakies claim 'directed' the Apollo footage. But none in the real thing, once you remove all their misconceptions.

@wen790 You're confusing altitude with velocity. A suborbital lob to a few hundred miles takes only about 4% of the energy required to achieve orbit. Once you're in orbit it takes comparatively little additional energy to move to higher altitudes because most of that is coasting. In fact it only takes twice the energy to escape the earth entirely than it does to achieve the lowest possible orbit.
