The "funny noises" are the inertia starter, the starter works by first spinning up a large flywheel (this is the whining sound) and then when it's spinning at top speed the pilot flick s the starter switch the other way and the flywheel engages to the engine (this is the graunching sound) and "kicks" the engine around a couple of revolutions, hopefully then it catches alight and away it goes. Otherwise, you have to start right from the beginning again.
I've heard the engine torque is pretty harsh on takeoff, the pilot just about has to stand on the rudder to keep it straight.

mmm, the best thing with the inertia starter is that you can handcrank it, especially if a noob flattened the battery :D
