For all the Quattropheniacs watching this, at the stage start around 1:20, Blomqvist's car bogs down slightly at the first gearchange when compared with Mikkola. Why? He had no second gear at the time and was forced to start in 1st and then jump to 3rd. Didn't seem to affect his speed into the first corner mind :-))))
1000 lakes rally (nowdays neste rally finland) has been most spectacular rally of all times and it means lot if some non scandinavian wins it so i think rorhl should even tried it
1000 Lakes most spectacular rally of all times ??!! Are you crazy ? Beautiful absolutely, but not the best. Monte Carlo is a legend, one of the most selective ! Portugal too ! And you should watch Corsa Rally....
i've seen them but 1000 lakes has highest avg.speed (even higher than pikes peak) and huge jumps and its allways great battle when non skandinavian driver come to challenge skandinavian drivers on their homelands
and btw rorhls favourite car was lancia 037 and when you see audi you should think hannu mikkola he was in audi team from beginning to end and 83 world champion
When I was a kid and that I heard the engine sound, I was like omg!! that's amazing!!! I never heard anything like that before! and I was wondering why this car doesnt sound like the others? Now I know...that sexy 5 cyl engine :D
Yeah, i love it too. I have seen the 1000 lakes 1985 stage Ouninpohja when they screw up Hannu Mikkola Audi to 750 hp when the engine was in the end. I get shaking just thinking about it.
Yeah, in some interview audi guy sayd so. Official "model/registered" information of power is varying, in the beginning of 1984: 450HP -> to end of 85:591HP. There are different kind of information that in long rallyes there was in some situations 600+ HP in use. Short time power 700+ (As known, few minutes in Stage Ouninpohja 1985 before engine blowup) is also found in different motor sites.
I think it's just symptomatic of the increasingly 'safe' boring bullshit society we live in. We won't let our children climb trees, we keep reducing speed limits (without reducing the road toll) and we won't let professional rally drivers drive fast cars - even though they agree to it with full awareness of the dangers.
Well the combination of the fast cars and the dare devils such as the spectators was to factors that made them ban Group-B. Claiming that it was only the spectators fault is kinda navie.
imagine if they had the tyre and suspension of today, even 10 years ago. the wrc cars of today wouldn't be smashing there records.
Y were they banned? I thought it was cause the drivers and co were dying but i heard in another video that it was coz spectators were. So its not the cars fault but raly organisers. Or did i here wrong?
Some of those shots give me the heebie-jeebies, for a different reason: people should NEVER be on the outside of a bend, directly in the path of the car if it loses traction and comes off. Some of the cameras broke that rule too; a couple of feet and a fraction of a second from a nasty end. 8(
What I see here is a time when the car and driver were really one in the same. While I applaud the drivers of today it does seem that computer mgmnt has made for an easier time of it compared driving an Audi Group B. I've read of how difficult the Audi was to control and that alone says volumes. Group B was pure unadulterated racing.
I was fortunate to see Group B cars first hand in rallycross spec in the late 80's, The Quattro S1 always my favorite especially Swede Olle Arnessons 800 BHP version, absolutely brutal.
I love watching that "dip" these killer B's do when braking for a corner. Group B had it's era, for life-threatening reasons, it was a good thing their time came to an end.
yet, I can't help but respect the drivers and co-drivers considering the technology they had back then. simply amazing driving skills handling these beasts.
None at all. These cars are what manufacturers tested their new ideas on before they used them in their road cars. 4WD(Audi) and many other things today all came because of Group B. The most extreme and skillful driving theres been. If someone can handle a Group B car they can handle everything
Great footage. This video further reinstates the fact that rallying is the most beneficial form of motorsport for the cars we drive on the road. Its a shame that Audi does not compete in the current WRC!
the car noise it's just amazing... group B car were banned because they were considered dangerous, having around 500bhp or more... nowadays, the wrcs "just" have 300hp, but I think with all the technology that we have now compared to the 80s, their power should be risen to the 500s or so, they wouldn't be as dangerous as the group Bs but would e much more spectacular than they are...
I should imagine in terms of straight line speed then Group B cars are faster, but around the corners modern WRCs would be much quicker. I think they would have the same tourqe output too so same acceleration.
They are still faster in a straight line, but the brakes are far worse. I really miss those Group B cars, they had what made your skin crawl. I know I sound like an old fart, but by just watching this you might wonder what could have been had they not banned them.
@gekko14 WRC="300" hp, B-Group=Unlimited, Audi S1 570hp. Of Course those cars suspension/brakes a far away todays WRC Cars...
I once see here YTube video, B-Group vs WRC, and B-Car was just a litt-le fastier. But just a really little bit, just like a 80's F1 Cars, Huge power on fast/much of straights is fast but of course in track where are plenty of corners those old cars are slower than a "todays" becouse suspension and brakes are so much better today.
i love audis. the olde auto union formula 1 car, is a hero car for me. the quattro is simply a evolution of that technology.

1985 S1. 0-100km/h 3 second, 0-200 km/h 9 second. Top speed was 220 km/h(Jyväskylä Ouninpohja special stage). Fuel consumption was about 1 litre/km.

It was all the spectators fault they banned group B, nothing else.
When Toivonen died because of his car leaking gas that kinda took the piss out of everyone and they just banned it. :(

biggred333 4 years ago
They had.
This particular one had a electrohydraulic-actuated double clutch transmission called the PDK or Porsche Doppelkupplung.
The predecessor to the DSG gearbox from Volkswagen or the S-tronic from Audi.
It still was faster then Formula 1 transmission until they finally came with seamless shift AMT's in 2006.
