Jim Dandy would not of been a hit without RUBY STARR , his kissin cousin as he says. I bet there was more then kissin goin on. Anyway , love BOA, but miss RUBY the most.RIP. how's old Jim doin? I'm sure uncle Elijha is past by now? Thanks for that southern Rock. U started it. Thanks again for inturducing Ruby Starr to people that love when rock was rock.
David Lee Roth fans must be retarded to have paid that guy hundreds of millions of dollars, while most of them have no idea that he stole his act 100% from the singer of Black Oak Arkansas. If you have never heard what David Lee Roth sounds like after you strip away all the music and isolate his voice, there are examples all over YouTube of that no talent scumbag. They make you laugh at the fools, who have worshipped Roth all these years.
Just thought about this group and found this. I remember seeing Black Oak with Blue Oyster Cult and Black Sabbath at UMd Cole Field House in 73 or 74. Jim Dandy had this long beard and did an electric washboard solo....classic!!! And big legged Rudy Starr........wow!!
Hick shit. I do wonder about the DLR connection, but only in looks. In every other way, there is no comparison. This guy is charismatic though.........after a fifth of JD and a 1/4 ounce. The musicians suck ass.
@wc4dblues You've got to be kidding me! Black Oak had many good songs. Jim Mangrum was a showman, pure and simple. They command and deserve as much respect as the Allmans and Skynard.
sorry folks....................but it wasn't Skynyrd or anyone else but the Allman Brothers band and particularly Duane Allman that were the pioneers of southern rock!
@Laf1960 You got it. These clowns had ONE THING GOING FOR THEM... A GREAT SONG,which they barely pulled off. You can't even speak this name in the same sentence with the ALLMAN Band. IT'S THE LAW.
@Laf1960 Oh how little you know Allmans are the the kings .But you got many more in there Black Oak started about the same time ,Johny Winters ,Marshell Tucker ,Leon Russell , Three Dog ,Dr Hook ,The Eagles ,believe it or dont .They were Linda Ronsadts back up band but they were all( except Joe Walsh) from the south .Then they struck out on their own .Linda being from Tucson Ariz
I did photo shoots at several of Black Oak's concerts in the summer of 1974. I can't tell you how much rowdy, crazy fun these guys were. They were. And Jim was totally imitated a few years later by David Lee Roth. Go Jim Dandy!
@areubaked i wasnt born until the 80s but black oak is amazing im now 26 and because of my dad and his influence in music im tottally hooked! rock the fuck on dudes
true look of a rock star of those times, robert plant saw him & said( iwanna look like that guy jimmy) then kieth moon said ( you guys will co down like a leAd zeppelin) yeah, it was supposed 2 be spelled that way at first.....tommy
Music ain't about competition... it's about the song and the moment. These guys rocked, and I was fortunate enough to see them multiple times, in my youth. Saw Ruby Starr and Grey Ghost mutliple times as well. I'm glad I grew up when I did.
Just saw 'em at Bike Week in Virginia Beach a couple of weeks ago. Good show and friendly guys. They signed my ex-girlfriend's Lynyrd Skynyrd jacket. They did a nice tribute to Ruby playing the ol' Grand Funk version of Heartbreaker.
one of the baddest dudes in southern rock! he should of been abig star!. but crappy follow up songs & drugs ended it. this is a cover song by the way. also if he played in the south 5 years early, they would of cut his hair off!
"take a swig from the water jug, pass it on to your neighbor and try avoiding the backwash from his bong hit"...can you see that happening today? everyone would take out their little pump bottles of hand sanitizer before touching the jug. pussies.

I was at the California Jam. My most vivid memory? Standing in line through 4 bands waiting to get into a port-a-potty. When I finally got in - it was literally filled to the top. I cried. Seriously.
This music is timeless, I so wished I would have been there..would have only been about 7yrs old..LOL...LOVE Tommy Aldridge..I met him here in Jackson, MS, when I was only 16, did not know he had been the drummer of BOA..and I did not know that he was the drummer of White Snake. Me & my first love that I married & have a handsome son by of course later, he introduced me to Tommy & Tommy asked me what song I would like to hear on the guitar & I told him Stairway to Heaven & he played & sang it.
Thanks so much for this video. I bet my dad I could find him any four songs he wanted on here. I lost, because I couldn't find him "Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven". But I found this, which was even better, because he was actually -at- this concert. :D
I saw Ruby Starr back in the 70s, just when the Grey Ghost album came out. She and BOA ruled. I live in the Memphis, TN area now and Jim Dandy lives here now. He plays a lot of outdoor festivals in the area.
