I personally wish they'd bring back compulsories, but even without them, I still think the gymnasts of today could incorporate more dance into their floor exercises. It seems like nowadays it's just tumbling pass, pose, pose, leap, tumbling pass, leap, turn, pose, pose - instead of actual choreography. In the compulsories there was attitude, chaine, tour jete, arabesque, etc. I wish floor routines were still choreographed this way.
@gymnasticsloverxoxo a head down get it done determination good but not connecting with the 3rd element harmony. Lilia has head up determination, she is fluid and the master, as if the music is hers along with the audience.
i miss the good ole days of the perfect 10 scoring system, now gymnastics is all about difficulty and who can have the highest start value, not about wowing the judges and the audience with originality and flare
@gymnasticsloverxoxo actually, no, strug's 9.825 was highest of the compulsory round on this event. podkopayeva had the misfortune of competing in an earlier session. the scores are available online if you'd like to see for yourself.
@htownhomie06 No, I am sorry but you are wrong. Look at the comments of Pod's floor exercise or watch the team compulsory sections of these Olympics (its on youtube), her score is a 9.850, I am 100% positive. STrug did get a 9.825.
see its bad enough that you do what you do.but you run with a junkie who wanted to be a us marine ,what a bunch of pussies resorted to making death threats to .this is how you make a death threat.when i get you i`ll cut your throat ill ripyour jugular out and stick one of your victims blades in your penis.now code that for legal reasons im waiting big brave men
Shannon performed Floor Compulsories perfectly, so beautiful, she's breath taking! I always wondered why she didn't make floor finales in the 96' Olympics...did she qualify? or am I just tripping? LOL If she didn't, I don't see how she couldn't have! LOL
She had a major error in team finals and that score combined with this one wasnt high enough. Keep in mind, Moceanu and Strug both qualified and Dawes was first alternate for Floor final.
She had a REALLY weak double "layout". I always wondered why Steve didn't figure out a better pass, though I know they needed bonus. That was absolutely the wrong skill for her.
@dancingRJ it wasen't she had a bad hamstring injury and she could pike without hurting and before her wrist injury she was doing them fine, and she had plenty of power until she had her wrist injury and she could barley grip a bar it's amazing she made it to the olympics and walked out in grand style she had a serious injury
@MrPontiusPilate it's a compulsory routine they're supposed to do basic skills, she's not an amateur, and i would LOVE to see YOU make it to the olympics!
it's odd 2 me they said they eliminated compulsories b/c crowds thought they were boring 2 watch. but watching a set like this 300 times, a miller or dawes or milosovici or podkopayeva, all doing the same exercise gives even the most ignorant observer the chance 2 see what makes the best the best.
and also, I think whoever invents these compulsories is a bit of a genius, as every olympics from like 1980 - 1996 has the most beautifull choreographed and wonderful compulsory floor routines.
ALTHOUGH, when I was a teenager doing gymnastics I thought compulsories were boring..... Now I understand more, I see how wonderful they were.
I second the motion! Gymnastics today, is like..whoever does the most daredevil acrobatic skill and whoever does the craziest stunt will win! ugh! I think the compulsories will certainly level the playing field..haha..by weeding out the ones who have bad technique from the ones who are elegant..now, with that, gymnasts today, will make sure they have a good combination of dance, elegance and power...i wonder how shawn johnson would fare if compulsories was part of 2008..hmmm, any thoughts, guys?
I guess we'll never know because we don't see enough of shawn's dance ability, etc to really know for sure. She's does have excellent technique so that is certainly in her favor.
Her flexabilty is her weakness and that would kill her in the compulsories. She presents herself well but if you can't hit the splits you wouldn't score well.
@gymfan82 you're absolutely right about that. Don't know why a prime gymnast like her didn't work to improve that. She never had flexibility, even younger
@gymfan82 You are correct. I am glad I am not the only one who sees that. She always came about 1" from hitting her splits but was never deducted for it. I feel like her flexibility was better when she was young though.
It is very difficult to say, but the elite girls DO do compulsories, we just never see them. It is part of the developmental process in the US. I'm sure if there had been compulsories, Shawn would have had her flexibility worked on. We've always had explosive athletes with weak basic skills that have done well. Dawes had some pretty big technique errors for a long time, but her power and charisma helped balance that out.
They really eliminated compulsories to allow more countries to participate at the highest levels. Since their removal, "smaller" countries have been able to spend their training time learning the big tricks to compete at the highest level. I don't particularly agree---look at the current state of our sport. Still, it is nice to see other countries able to showcase their best athletes on their strongest events.
I do miss seeing fundamentals done to their "model" amplitude and technique.
Finals was the combination of compulsories plus optionals. Compulsories were used to separate athletes by forcing them to show "basic" skills performed to the highest technique. For example the first tumbling pass has only A and B level skills. The difficulty is in demonstrating height and acceleration, tightness of body, clean lines, pointed toes, straight legs, twist at the top of the salto, etc.
The problem with compulsories is that they take a great deal of time and resources to perfect. A major reason for their elimination was to allow countries with fewer resources the opportunity to spend those resources on developing the more advanced skills necessary to compete at the highest optional levels. Since the elimination of compulsories, more athletes from a wider variety of countries have been able to be competitive.

I love her gymnastics but this routine less so. She seems a little anxious and she is dancing too fast to this classical music, maybe due to nerves. Still a good performance but not great. Personally I found her score quite high. I think her teammates Borden and Dawes did a better routine here.
She is actually a bit behind the music, as she ends just a bit later than the music. I thought she did wonderful. Borden wouldn't have scored higher unless Shannon had a huge mistake - the whole setup of the team depends on the first person, and they rarely get a big score, no matter what. Too bad, Borden hit soo well.
Dawes was powerful in her tumbling but I don't think she was polished enough in her form, toe-point, extension etc. to score higher than Shannon. Amanda had nice form but she lacked that star quality that might have put her later in the lineup. jmo.
You think Dawes and Borden presented this routine better then Shannon? Are you serious? Shannon was 20 times better then any Mag 7 member in all 4 compulsories routines except maybe Strug's explosiveness on vault but even then Miller's techinque and form were better then her's
I actually happen to like Borden's floor. Plus she was well regarded in the international community, which is why she still scored a 9.7+ (only .065 behind Miller). I'm not saying she was better, just that I happened to like her presentation. Miller's was much more technically correct.
@diskplaying im sorry but, your wrong, it's a fast pace music, even though it's classical, and if you think dawes or borden preformed this better..? Then they're has to be something wrong with your eye sight! She wasen't anxious everyone preformed it this fast, because once again this is a fast pace dance, most compulsory routines are, to see your ability to flow with the music, and dawes and borden's form was so bad during these routines, it's impossible for them to suceed in compulsories
watch this with dominique moceanus and pause domies at:3 and pause shanons at :4 tthen press play on shannons first then pres play on domies. watch how diff they are. make surre its compulsories. makesure its this users vid of dom.
:55 pause there, her split in her back extension roll looks almost unatrual, but so beautiful, kind of reminds me of nastia!
