heh nice, Suicidal Tendencies. hey, my setup is almost the same, Mesa Boogie Simul class 295 stereo, JMP-1 and power conditioner, Carvin 400 watt cab.
Has anyone done a shoot between Dimarzio Super Distortion and Seymour Duncan Duncan Distortion? Or at least has thoughts, opinions on which is better?
i have a drop sonic in my prs. i kno its not the super distortion but the drop sonic is an amazing pickup. i highly recommend dimarzio pickups. especially the drop sonic. what are you wanting to put it in?
@day2daygrindin Not at all, I see guys standing right next to there rigs squinting at there G major with a look of pure death on there faces. If you'r going to be standing a good 4+ meters away, It's a good investment.
All of them sounded pretty bad because of the recording, but the JMP-1 seemed like it may have had the fullest/most articulate sound out of the amps used.
Your Demo does not do justice to all of the cabs and rack effects. Get a real condense mic and record it properly for a real demo. All of them sound thin and sucky but it is not the case if you record it properly.
Can you run the JMP-1 and the MP-1 simultaneously through the Mesa 2:90. Panned left/right. I'm trying to set something like this up and wondering if its gonna work and what I will need to do it. Any info would be appreciated.
That may have had more to do with the Rectifier standard Cab I used to have.
Everything sounded scooped with it. I got tired of it sucking out the mids, (which sounded good for heavy stuff, but made things a little muddy), and got the Traditional cab.
or i will run straight thru the screamer, it depends on the gig and how big the room is, if its a massive room I would use my triple rectifier, but as the screamer can easily keep up with (and out scream any marshall 100W+ amp, its an amazingly powerful little baby), its versatile and light enough to keep me happy. I know guys who have 30K racks, but their sound is like poo. Its a case of each to their own, which is what Iove about all musicians, we are after all the best humans! Peace All!
Depending on your style of music, either is good. Tonally in my opinion direct into your amp will always win the war, the triaxis simply allows you greater access to more combinations of clean / dirty settings. Until recently I ran my TRI thru a mesa nomad 100 with a marshall jfx1, coupled with some stomp boxes, most guitar players only use a handful of settings in a live situation anyway. I now alternate between running the TRI thru an engl 50 screamer combo...continued below
honestly, i think mesa amps are really over priced for what they are and they all have a really tinny mid-range you can never seem to EQ out. If you haven't bought either yet i would encourage you to look into either Peavy (XXX or JSX) or MArshall ( JCM2000 DSL, the TSL sounds like ass compared to the DSL's) or if you can track one down and have the loot, find the Framus Dragon heads, they sound like god in an amp but they will cost you about double a mesa.
You're comparing Peavys to Mesas?? Look at all the switching/channel/rectifier opotions you have with the rectifier series - endless tonal options. The amps you mention are one trick ponies. And if you actually like a scooped mid sound, maybe you should try some nice solid state amps.
imagine jmp1 and mesa 290 on one side, and the dual rectifier on the other in a stereo setup-- and to the guy who made this, you should try that setup !i run a jmp1 into a mesa stilletto, and a dual rect, the three channel one onthe other side, it kicks ass. Marshalls screaming sound, with that low end mesa sound.
The ADA MP-1 3TM wins pretty easily; Mesa Dual Rectifier comes in second. I love the MP-1, and you really have me thinking about getting the 3TM mod -- sounds to me like it retains the MP-1's delicious crunch but delivers improved clarity.
Not sure you gave the Marshall JMP-1 a fair shot... it was really weak in the bass, and I know it can do better with some knob-twisting.
Although I had issues with some of the EQ settings, the ADA MP-1 sounded much better than the rest. More crunch, tight lows and lot of definition. ADA wins!!!
yea i tried doing that but the mesa i have is an older model and the effect loop seems alittle weird. If i was to put the sonic maximizer through main input will that effect the sound at all?
use the Effects Loop. SEND to your pedals/processors, out from them to RETURN. Turn Loop ON to whichever setting you want (mine has a dial, not the recto in this video...mine is #112).
T.C. Electronic G-Force Effects Unit. Just a note, Please see my other video where I have recorded all the same amps (except the recto, which is a different one), but this time using a mic, and then layering them all together at the end! All these amps at the same time!!
Well, it took quite awhile, but I finally got around to recording a new video, using all the amps, and mic'ing a cab and all that. Please see my other video for a comparison between all the amps and then all of them all TOGETHER!!
true, however, i have found this true of the ACE combo. shortly after making this video, i decided to sell the ACE and buy a DEUCE Stage II (see my other video for that amp) and that has become my main amp for everything nowadays.
Before purchase i called Mesa and asked about differences, and they told me the Deuce would get more LOW END and the transformers are different, which cause the obvious difference in the tones. ACE has better Tone, but Deuce was more favorable because of the low end.
can a midi footpedal save the settings of the preamp and the power amp in one channel? like if you had different amp settings on the marshall combinded with different settings on your phantom...
The "Phantom" as you are referring to it as, is a T.C. Electronic G-Force Effects Unit. I programmed it to scroll my bands name is all. To answer your question, YES, a Midi controller can be programmed to change patches on a Preamp (like the Triaxis or JMP-1), AND also the effects patch as well (depends on the units and how they are programmed).
honestly, i have been trying to decide between getting a JMP1 or Triaxis and this video compared the two side by side which helped me pick one (Triaxis). Thanks!
Opposite of many other opinions I think that it is a very great video (I'm very positive today). Why have I gave it 5? Here is a man who is not a pofessional but he takes his time and shares his experiences, gives us a chance to hear such "legends" one by one with the same guitar. Yes of course a laptop's built in microphone cannot make magic but the main differences are audible. Respect and thanks mightywarlock, keep on rockin'!
Dude suicidal tendencies kicks ass. It seems like a lot of people want you to make this video. You should try to get Rocky's leads down when you remake it, people won't even care what the amps sound like. People will love the shred . But nice set up I have a triple recto I love it. keep rockin
amm...this was not the best demonstration IMO.you did not play one solo lick it was all rhythm.demonstration is 1 dimensional..still triaxis wins of course:D but you are using it on LD2 yellow mode..it is a mark IIC+..the best channel on TA for solo guitar..and you did not play anything else than 1 rhythm section.I also have TA, but your rack is awesome!!larger than mine!it's all cool, just make another more usefull demo video:)
hmm you've got some cool stuff, I never messed around with rack mounted things myself and dont know what I'm looking at. I have a mesa lonestar though and it keeps me happy
dang dude, you have nice stuff, you just need to work on dialing in settings, and might i suggest a tube screamer to give that extra edge to your gear, the stilleto could use it, and maybe the triaxis, i wanted to ask what rack tuner you use and how are you liking it?
I wouldnt worry about it mate, its not that bad, i only looked at it to judge what sort of sound you can get from an MP1.. i already have a triaxis and was looking at using the MP1 in my rig somehow.. probably have to have some miraculous switching system set up to use em both live though
The triaxis is used with the Lead 2 Yellow channel....The sound of this channel is not great for metal\rock use!he might be use the lead 1 Red with The deep and modern voice of the 2:90!!!.....KILLER!!!! ;)
Lead 2 Yellow not good for Rock and Metal... WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?! That's the Mark IIc+ mode, which is one of THE BEST amps to use for rock and metal... or maybe John Petrucci and James Hetfield are just wrong. I used that mode on the Triaxis more than any other. Lead 1 Red is too farty and buzzy.
if you use a gibson les paul you'll hear the real sound of the pre's try whit a fender too! the ibanez has a very mid sound the fender has some many more colors and the les is ROCK!
i no longer have the Dual Recto tho...i thought the Triaxis was close enough...and sold the Ace, for a Deuce II...which isnt as harsh at all as Ace. hence, why i sold the ace.
The JMP-1 sounded the best. Im not a marshall fan either. I own an MP-1, but it doesn't sound like yours (I like mine better, but it could be the recording mic-mine also does not have the 3 tube mod.)
All these amps deserve a true mic. Anyway no comparison is possible if you do not mic all the amps on the same cabinet with the mic on the same position.
Nice job with the comparison. I would reccommend using Shure SM-57's or a high quaity condenser mic with flat eq for a more accurate sound. That way it is closer to the way these amp setups would be heard from a studio console.
this one was used with imovie. the other video i did with just the Stiletto Deuce was mic'd, and i shot it with a real camera. i still plan on re-recording this whole test as well...when i get some free time.
This sounds good? Either that Stiletto is broke, or it's settings are way off. It sounded like a metal zone plugged into a solid state. I couldn't get any amp to sound that bad if I tried. The other amps sound a little better. DR sounded the best.
due to the nature of compression, YouTube isn't really the best venue to demonstrate aural qualities. Nothing sounds like it would in person, so we wind up comparing what the amps DON"T sound like
Hi - Can you clarify a couple of things...Do you run the pre-amps at the same time into either channel on the 290? Or do you manually switch cables? Any hum issues? I have a Triaxis and JMP1 and just got a Switchblade GL to run multi-preamp configs...just wondering...thanks!
Currently, i have to switch cables. I have a ground control pedal, but havent decided which to get, a GCX or the Mesa Amp Switcher. if i find a really good deal on either of these, i will pick one up. I would like the Amp Switcher, but i guess those both do the same thing. i have been using my Stiletto Deuce mainly nowadays, so the rack is 2nd priority at the moment.
Mesa Boogie Dual sounded deep, rich and musical to me.

Yes.

or anything else you want.
but you will need to figure out the cab situation. Basically like having to separate amps.

I wouldnt worry about it mate, its not that bad, i only looked at it to judge what sort of sound you can get from an MP1.. i already have a triaxis and was looking at using the MP1 in my rig somehow.. probably have to have some miraculous switching system set up to use em both live though
Jurt 3 years ago
The triaxis is used with the Lead 2 Yellow channel....The sound of this channel is not great for metal\rock use!he might be use the lead 1 Red with The deep and modern voice of the 2:90!!!.....KILLER!!!! ;)
LordRav3n 4 years ago
Lead 2 Yellow not good for Rock and Metal... WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?! That's the Mark IIc+ mode, which is one of THE BEST amps to use for rock and metal... or maybe John Petrucci and James Hetfield are just wrong. I used that mode on the Triaxis more than any other. Lead 1 Red is too farty and buzzy.

a 100W Marshall and a Boss DS-1 is all a rocker need to sound good
maturanesa 4 years ago
uh ds-1's suck. you want real tone you need to invest in a tube amp and crank that sucker up
alexh889 4 years ago
You should record your sounds with a real mic...

The Stilleto sounded good for a kind of AC/DC sound.
The Triaxas had a horrible sound on the low pedals.
The Marshall has a nice 80s metal Randy Rhodes kind of sound to it.
The dual rectifier sounds very good and would awesome for anything but madly distorted sounds (which you don't really want ;D)
The ADA was a bit tinny for overly distorted for my tastes, but it'd be good for some murderous metal. XD
Sum up:Favourites in order
dual rectifier
marshall
stilleto
The others were kind of 'meh'

Marshall was the best sound for this song But dual rec is close

i know i know.
i need to re-record everything.
i no longer have the Dual Recto tho...i thought the Triaxis was close enough...and sold the Ace, for a Deuce II...which isnt as harsh at all as Ace. hence, why i sold the ace.
mightywarlock 4 years ago
God, got enough gear brotha? Sell it all and get a diezel VH4!
syn5643 4 years ago
i tried one.
didn't like it compared to the Einstein.
but the Diezels are a little too "processed" sounding to me.
I was thinking Engl for a while, but i often feel the Engl powerball doesn't cut through the mix well. maybe the SE...
got a Stiletto Deuce II and all is well now.
mightywarlock 4 years ago
Haha, What's your proffesion man? Do you think the Dual recto head would do Tool?

mesa sounds better... your marshall sound is too saturated...

i liked the triaxis and dual rectifier, but i think the stiletto was crap "/

The JMP-1 sounded the best. Im not a marshall fan either. I own an MP-1, but it doesn't sound like yours (I like mine better, but it could be the recording mic-mine also does not have the 3 tube mod.)
krelbar 4 years ago
I liked the Marshall the best. Sounded the cleanest.

Cool demo, i like the fact you keep playing the same riff so that i can really hear the differences, i like the marshall best :)

maybe shorter clips should do fine

Try tweaking your amp. Way too much TREBLE!
benjaminstrat 4 years ago
Ha "song ruined for this comparison"
kifani1 4 years ago
All these amps deserve a true mic. Anyway no comparison is possible if you do not mic all the amps on the same cabinet with the mic on the same position.
Different positions will make huge differences.
julesdb 4 years ago
You should try a little bit of lead playing as well.
But anyway nice set up. Ive always wanted to get a nice rack setup going but i have never had time..

And how much did this puppy cost u
thrash232 4 years ago
whats the lowest price you can get a used Mesa Recto?
yankeesfan571 4 years ago
The Dual Rec sounds the best...you should hear my ADA MOD3.666 clip...it sounds almost the same as that DR. Check my vids.
hydrapulse 4 years ago
Nice job with the comparison. I would reccommend using Shure SM-57's or a high quaity condenser mic with flat eq for a more accurate sound. That way it is closer to the way these amp setups would be heard from a studio console.

what program did u use on ur mac to record the vid and and audio together? does imovie allow for it? nice comparison video though.
xsk3l3t0rx 4 years ago
this one was used with imovie. the other video i did with just the Stiletto Deuce was mic'd, and i shot it with a real camera. i still plan on re-recording this whole test as well...when i get some free time.
mightywarlock 4 years ago
This sounds good? Either that Stiletto is broke, or it's settings are way off. It sounded like a metal zone plugged into a solid state. I couldn't get any amp to sound that bad if I tried. The other amps sound a little better. DR sounded the best.
OMFGSTFU77 4 years ago
The reason it didn't sound better was the fact it was recorded with the built in mic in a Mac.

Mesa Boogie > *
take a marshall amp. add it a LOT of versatility and a lot of better sound ... what you get? Mesa Boogie =)
0openlate0 4 years ago
i have trouble playing loud on the ada...it's a bit noisy. but it really does sound awesome...especially for an 80's rack unit. i love mine.
pazopeth 4 years ago
I actually liked the sound of the Stiletto.

Yep, a lot of expensive things on this video.
Btw, i prefer the JMP-1.
haiiyaman 4 years ago
due to the nature of compression, YouTube isn't really the best venue to demonstrate aural qualities. Nothing sounds like it would in person, so we wind up comparing what the amps DON"T sound like
stinktank 4 years ago 5
some guyz are right. i suggest you use a mid-scoop v EQ setting to get the most out of these awsome amps. good job though thanks
StOaK50V3R316N 4 years ago
Dude, this mic sucks a lot! Please update this video as soon as you can!
But nice preamps!! I've liked the JMP-1 + 2:90 combination. Sounds awesome!
sonicjhn 4 years ago
all the mesa stuff sounded better...
luke101978 4 years ago
Hi - Can you clarify a couple of things...Do you run the pre-amps at the same time into either channel on the 290? Or do you manually switch cables? Any hum issues? I have a Triaxis and JMP1 and just got a Switchblade GL to run multi-preamp configs...just wondering...thanks!
deathlord28 4 years ago
Currently, i have to switch cables. I have a ground control pedal, but havent decided which to get, a GCX or the Mesa Amp Switcher. if i find a really good deal on either of these, i will pick one up. I would like the Amp Switcher, but i guess those both do the same thing. i have been using my Stiletto Deuce mainly nowadays, so the rack is 2nd priority at the moment.
