Very interesting show, I recall. It was my gateway into the Mechwarrior games and the battletech universe as a whole. I still hold an amazing bias for the Centurion, Wolfhound, and the Mauler. Even though the Mauler's crap in this show and to an extent in the board game...
Battletech should get a live action miniseries. The cutscenes from the Mechwarrior/Commander series prove the franchise has serious potential. But this is what we got, and when you have niche interests you just have to take what you can get.
Besides, Battletech today is nowhere near as popular as it was in the 80's and 90's.
@OsirisLord Too many problems with live-action in a series like this. i'm all for a cgi series remake however like clone wars . Same goes for exo-squad.
The problem with an all CG series is the same problem you had with this series; the animation age ghetto. Battletech is a pretty mature setting but you make it all animated and people will think "It's a cartoon, for kids." Now I'm not saying this was a very kiddie cartoon, it wasn't. But that's also the reason why no one died in it. You can't do a war story without people dying. And you can't have on screen deaths of major characters in a kids show.
A CG series that looked like that would be too cost prohibitive to make. Seriously, it would be easier to just do a life action series at that point so my original point still stands.
I think the guys who did Battlestar Galactica could pull it off. Unlike Stargate which is fueled by wit and action, the more desolate feel of the Succession Wars would be much more fitting for their style.
I think that one of the novels actually mentioned that the events of the cartoon did actually occur... but it was a "poorly received anti-Clan propaganda piece".
I actually like the game, books and show so much that I sat down and wrote a story that would fix all the problems that are mentioned. I even fixed the problem that keeps new viewers away. I did here that someone else is producing a mechwarrior movie. It is very doubtfull that the holes have been fixed. I have a feeling it will be like aribender; high dollar effects with little to no dialog and no plot.
I thought this was the coolest cartoon ever when I was 8. The toys were pretty cool too. I actually rewatched the series a couple years ago and still liked it. I just wish it would come out on DVD with better video quality. The downloadable versions are atrocious. The last episode is also hard to find (although I eventually found it). Then I got into the table top game around age 12. Being old sucks.
my altime fav Mech was the AXMAN..... i dono somthing about a mech with a blunt weapon sounds sick!!! i wound love to see a clip of the axman hacking up clan mechs like when the Natives hacked up the english in the 1600-1700's
@racecardriver467 There were actually two variants of the Axman. The first variant had the head off-center and an AC-20 on its shoulder. The variant two (as seen in the cartoon) has a centered head and two LRM 15's (I think). Then there's the Hatchetman, but it was only 45 tons, I believe.... Two of my favorites too actually.
I remember when I was three, I was in either Maryland or Puerto Rico and I wanted to get the toy of the red mech, but my mom didn't want to get it. Afterwards, my only memory of this show was that event. By then, I was collecting Beast Wars toys. God Bless the 90s.
I said FROM space, not IN space. When you use "from space", it implies that they're invading something while "in space" denotes somebody was there already. White crackers from the far-off reaches of the galaxy invade the Galactic Federation and a diverse crew work together to fight back. THAT'S the joke I was working in.
"But they made one mistake...they attacked MY home planet! Now, in the spirit of the Star League, ancient enemies has reunited...and we're gonna TAKE BACK our galaxy!" -> theme song repeats. Easily the best part.
Btw, "ancient enemies" refers to whom? I *think* the emblem on the right was Steiner.
This and MW4 were my introduction to BattleMechs. And he does have a point: Clan mechs tend to be superior in MW4.
"Ancient enemies" basically refers to the five Successor States in the post-Star League Inner Sphere. In this case, the Draconis Combine (House Kurita - emblem on the left) and the Federated Commonwealth (a merger of House Davion's FEDERATED Suns and House Steiner's Lyran COMMONWEALTH).
Then you missed quite a bit, Phasa had started to have large legal issues around that time and had to dragistly change the game design's, befor falling and selling out to Wizards of the coast. The most accurate game we got was Mechwarrior 3 after that it gone down hill.
Clan's did have better tech rangeing from Extended range Omnitech , Armor, Nural implant's and cloneing(better gunnery and piloting skill). Later Innersphere started to reverse engineer there technologie
I KNEW there was a show of Mech Warriors. At least now I know why I could never seem to find it. I kept calling it Mech Warriors as opposed to Battle Tech. Oh well.
The show had a bit of promise, but it felt too much like an experimental series. The CGI definitely did not mesh with the rest of the animation. That and the fact that no one ever died in the entire show kinda killed it dramatically.
I would love to see a remake of Battletech. Having played Mechwarrior and even before that with the little figurines seeing this show brings back memories and with Technology now it wouldn't be to hard to do.
Me and some friends were talking about that last weekend. But, I've heard that there is a Robotech / Macross live action movie in the works with Toby Maguire as Rick Hunter (I think). And Battletech was a rip-off of that show.
I am going t.o tell you that the animation of this show sucks This is not an attack on the show, i am just saying that it is clunky and the machines just look off as machines. Exosquad (which i liked BTW) had the same problems.,
I would like to see a good battletech series, the setting is nice and diverse and with some halfway decent writing you could easily pull off a good storyline. Firefly would be a good template for the space stuff in such a show (no sound, just music with outside shots).
@SartoriusSeven Clan Smoke Jaguar orbitally bombarded Turtle Bay on the planet Edo, levelling everything. Which is one of the primary reasons why the Jags were targeted by the Trial of Annihilation carried out by SLDF forces. That act also resulted in the other Invading Clans sending their WarShips home - since glassing civvies was considered 'dishonorable' and 'wasteful' by Clan ideas.
its badly animated but so were a lot of shows back then... plus they didn't have the biggest budget. Most American mech cartoons were pretty bad in the 90s. Of course they are hardly much better in the 2000's. This isn't Gundam Wing by any stretch of the imagination.
I'd really like to see Battletech remade (with a LOT more episodes this time around!)
i remember axeman....in fact...thats like the only thing i remember about this cartoon...besides its name....and that it had a groovy song in its opening.

the hatchetman or Ax-man, whatever you wanna call it, is part of the battletech cannon, the reason the games don't have it is because they already support so much long range stuff, since the game is soo unbalanced, it'd be pointless to have something for close range melee.
The Hatchetman and Axeman were two different mechs. They were used extensively throughout the classic Battletech when FASA was still around...and they were made even better with the 'Maximum Tech' expansion.
