That part where Bugs was plugging the holes in the can was edited in afterward. Originally, he just followed the can down to Sam's face, then shot him in the face.

I think the reason why this cartoon wasn't released is because during the can-shooting scene, Bugs doesn't shoot the can full of corks, he throws the can up in the air and waits till it's level with Sam's head and fires, thereby shooting Sam. In these PC times, some bureaucrat probably decided that this great cartoon was no-go.

When I was a kid in the '70s, the censors always edited out the most violent gags in the classic cartoons thinking that kids would try to imitate the actions. But the racist/sexist/politically-inco­rrect gags remained intact. Today it's just the opposite. Any gag that might offend any minority group gets cut out, and the violent gags are left in. I just wish we could one day see these shows completely unedited as they were originally intended.

That line You've been eatin' onions has always cracked me up. I must add on bit of trivia to this clip: In the original cartoon, after Sam shot the can full of holes, Bugs tossed the can into the air and followed its descent with his gun until it was level with Sam's head, at which point he shot. Afterwards, Sam was standing there with a blackened blown-up face. I don't know when they took out this section and replaced it with Bugs shooting the holes with plugs.

I think that alternate shooting scene was used to replace Bugs shooting Sam in this compilation to make it look like Bugs was good at gun targetry. Also, this alternate shooting outcome was used to replace Bugs shooting Sam in "Wild and Woolly Hare" when that short aired on ABC, Nickelodeon, and the syndicated "Merrie Melodies" compilation show, to eliminate the violence of Bugs shooting Sam.
