@McCarthy331 - I agree. In a lot of ways most African countries are as bad off now as they were under colonialism. Now they just have black tyrants instead of white ones. Though a lot of the Western powers still own some of the critical resources in many African countries that would allow them to industrialize faster (like DeBeers owning much of the continent's diamonds and Western oil companies owning most of the oil). But the native-run dictatorships deserve blame as well for letting it go on.
@McCarthy331 - Most of the dictatorships are more than happy to exploit their own people and look the other way on near-slave labor, as long as the Western companies slip them a small percentage of the profits. The dictatorial governments encourage violence against their own people by roving militia thugs.
There is some hope, though. Africa is the continent with the most countries with high GDP growth and rapid rates of industrialization. Botswana, S. Africa, Angola, Namibia, etc. stand out.
@A86 very interesting, I agree about the dictatorships. But unfortunitly there is too much violence, and poverty their as well. I hope that more nations in africa will industrialize effectively. But their are a number of bad examples, hopefuly we will see Made in Congo on some products... but it will be a very long time.
@McCarthy331 - Even though the violence, poverty and AIDS epidemic in much of Africa has declined some since the late 80s-early 2000s it's still at critical levels for many countries. Far too many African nations are still basically unofficial slave colonies with a population of poor peasants hounded by RUF (those barbarians from "Blood Diamond" and Nicholas Cage's "Man of War")-style thugs roaming the countryside and Mobutu Sese Seko-clones tyrannizing the country from their ivory mansions.
@McCarthy331 - Though I would argue that this cycle won't completely end as long as Western companies monopolize productive capital in Africa and Western governments continue to install or fund Mobutu/Idi Amin-type puppets. Even though Asia's economic growth is slowing I think China, India and S. Korea will probably continue to be the most dominant non-Western economies for a while as Western economies lose prominence. Not so much Japan because it's spiraling downhill like most of the West.
@McCarthy331 - We'll probably see more economic prominence from S. Africa before other African countries since S. Africa was listed in 2010 as a "Newly Industrialized Country" and continues to drive much of the continent's foreign investment and industrial production. Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, Botswana, Angola, Namibia (and Tanzania and Sudan to a lesser extent) are the next African countries most likely to become more prominent and industrialized. Maybe some time in the 2020s or 30s.
@McCarthy331 - I'd like to see more "Made in Congo" watermarks and stickers as well but we're probably more likely to see "Made in South Africa" and "Made in Nigeria" ones (in the next 5-10 years for the former and in the next 15-25 years for the latter) before ones for Congo. Still, I hope and pray countries like Congo, Malawi and Burundi can be pulled back from the abyss.
Being a US citizen I also hope we don't continue on our path to end up like the Soviet Union in 1989-91. :(

There have certainly always been wars between different peoples in Africa (as in Europe where until the 19th century there were wars virtually every 25 years), but nothing on the scale of post-colonial Africa.

When the white man was in charge he massacred millions of people, forced the people onto reservations, hyper-exploited the people and got wealthy from doing no work of his own and sent the wealth back to Europe and the US so those countries could profit. It's not quite the same with the West. They actively set up leaders in Africa who they know will keep the status quo because it allows the West to continuing to prosper from hyper-exploitation of the continent. The black governments in Africa are largely puppet governments installed by the CIA. Read into what happened when Patrice Lumumba was killed by the CIA and replaced with a CIA puppet (Mobutu). The same with Kwame Nkrumah. It's similar to what happened in Chile with Allende being assassinated and replaced with dictator Augusto Pinochet.

While I don't have faith in Chinese investors to be there for any altruistic reasons so far they have shown to not be as exploitative with their deals as European investors have been historically been. Laurent Nkunda is very much aligned to Rwanda. While a good military leader, I have great doubts on his ability to rule the Congo much less to carry his offensive all the way to Kinshasa.
Unfortunately what Kabila Sr. did was double cross his Rwandan and Ugandan backers and this led to the Second Civil war which in turn led to Congo's current predicament.

The current problems in Congo stems from two things:
1. The decades long misrule by Mobutu who was one of the worst leaders in Africa and did nothing for his people but steal money.
2. The Second Congo Civil war ending up in a stalemate, so much so that Kabila Jr. in Kinshasa has little control over his subordonates even more so Eastern Congo which is still very much under rebel control.
And then what? I guarantee you that even if an uprising started and all the rich and powerful were slaughtered everything would reset when the leaders of the rebellion become greedy!

Though a lot of the Western powers still own some of the critical resources in many African countries that would allow them to industrialize faster (like DeBeers owning much of the continent's diamonds and Western oil companies owning most of the oil). But the native-run dictatorships deserve blame as well for letting it go on.

Even though Asia's economic growth is slowing I think China, India and S. Korea will probably continue to be the most dominant non-Western economies for a while as Western economies lose prominence. Not so much Japan because it's spiraling downhill like most of the West.

Africa was listed in 2010 as a "Newly Industrialized Country" and continues to drive much of the continent's foreign investment and industrial production. Maybe some time in the 2020s or 30s.

The CIA also deposed Kwame Nkrumah and tried to de-install the government of Mozambique for fear of "Communism spreading in the dark continent". ive been there and the lack of common sense is unbelievable, even with the most basic tasks, and you can see that goes right the way up to governments. Western influences no doubt cause problems but many of them will so quickly sell out their own people for personal gain. With its natural resources congo could become a superpower-but they just dont think that way.

Besides being straong and charismatic, the most important thing is also knowing how to manipulate all sides to for the betterment of his people and country.
This is quite rare, a crafty but self sacrificing leader who is nationalistic and cares for his people and his ultimate goal of bettering his people and country. I think is better than just being a kind leader.

Kabila Jr. is a weak puppet who has a command range of a AK-47.
Laurent Nkunda is very much aligned to Rwanda. While a good military leader, I have great doubts on his ability to rule the Congo much less to carry his offensive all the way to Kinshasa.

Unfortunately what Kabila Sr. did was double cross his Rwandan and Ugandan backers and this led to the Second Civil war which in turn led to Congo's current predicament.
This is further excacerbated by foreign interests in Congo's natural resources by Just about every industrialized nation and corporation on Earth.
The Congo has to have a strong leader to unite behind but unfortunately there is none.

Mobutu even though he was a kleptomaniac jerkoff who only cared about himself and had bad fashion sense had the opportunity to uplift Congo after he won a comprehensive political and military victory in the 1960s Congo Crisis but what did he do?
NOTHING but enrich himself.
When he was deposed by Kabilla Sr. he left a Congo that was not developed and in a state of civil war.

The current problems in Congo stems from two things:
1. The decades long misrule by Mobutu who was one of the worst leaders in Africa and did nothing for his people but steal money.
2. The Second Congo Civil war ending up in a stalemate, so much so that Kabila Jr. in Kinshasa has little control over his subordonates even more so Eastern Congo which is still very much under rebel control.
