You could definitely tell they could barely remember their lines. Regardless, it was great to see Alice and Steve scenes. I am surprised at how long the scenes were then too.
The infamous scene where Rachel gets Alice in a room and viciously tells her that she's carrying Steven's baby happened in July 1969. That's when Robin Strasser was still playing the role of Rachel. Unfortunately there isn't a tape of that. This happened in 1973, after Victoria Wyndham had assumed the role of Rachel.
@Mike4AW Actually Mike I was fortunate enough to obtain an audio only copy of that famous scene between Alice and Rachel from August of 1969 and it is the best soap opera scene of all-time! Hearing the vicious Rachel spew her venom on the beautiful Alice is haunting, even after listening to that scene over 20 times! One of Rachel's lines..."That ring belongs ta me! This party belongs ta me! Steven belongs ta me because I LOVE HIM and I'm having his baby!!!!"
@ponder3ful However, there is one confrontation scene I have on DVD between the new Rachel (Victoria Wyndham) and Alice (Jacquie Courtney) filmed in 1974 and that was one hell of a scene. Alice didn't allow Rachel to have the upper hand, or the bulk of the dialogue, in that one. Liz had to restain Alice from attacking Rachel.
@Joanfan29 OMG I was 10 at the time and remember Alice getting ready in front of the mirror and Rachel saying those lines about the ring and party, then the look on Alice's face as she danced with Steven at the party. Would Love to get an audio copy Joan, happy to pay what you want.. Best doug!
@dtw1958 Doug; You can buy several audio CD's of "Another World", including this infamous scene from Eddie Drueding on his "Another World Homepage" site. He is a great man to deal with and the CD's are inexpensive. I bought all the CD's he has in his collection along with a bunch of DVD's too from the 1970's. Good luck and enjoy!
@Joanfan29 oh.......and the scene a few days later when Alice goes to visit Rachel and Rachel doesn't want to answer the door. Rachel says she doesn't feel like talking and Alice responds if you don't let me in, I will do some talking. Once inside, Alice cuts off Rachel's babbling on trying to save herself with a great "Shut Up Rachel"
You would never find a scene this long with this much dialogue today on the Soaps. Between all the ads, and the feeling that the young audience has ADD and couldnt still long enough, but I say watch Mad Men, they certainly get away with it.........ah the good old days.
So sad to learn about the death of Jackie Courtney. I never thought AW was as good after they fired the actors playing Steve, Alice and Mary Matthews -- and was always more of a fan of Steve and Alice than Mac and Rachel. Thanks for sharing this clip!
@tko718 I read about it on the cover of a soap magazine when I was at the store with my sister hours ago. She'll always be remembered for being part of soaps first "supercouple"...and for being repaired with her leading man on another show.
The Alice/Rachel/Steve triangle was a huge highlight on AW from the late 60's thru the mid 70's. Back then Rachel was a vicious viper who would do just anything to keep Alice & Steve apart no matter what it took.
@rickram1961 Yeah, I heard that Agnes Nixon was responsible for that. Good for her. I would have loved for Beth Ehlers to play her in a Movie, have Reese Witherspoon play a Young Agnes Nixon but I think they'd have to have a Newcomer to play Bill Bell.
I always wanted to see a photo of my favorite character, Bernice Robinson, but the photo was nowhere to be found. Jacqueline Courtney was my 2nd favorite on another world.
Whenever I hear the music or the announcers' voices for these soaps of the 70's, I get this painful, longing feeling for those days. I miss them so much. I like the understated production quality of the soaps in the 70's as opposed to the annoying, over-produced shows of today.
This clip brought back so many good memories of me doing my homework while my Mom (and I, between math problems) watched "Another World". It's a shame there aren't more existing videos of those 70's soaps.
I read an interview with Bob Woods that when Jacquie Courtney was playing Pat Ashley on OLTL, Bob Woods and Phil Carey wet their hands as a practical joke and shook her hand which then smeared all her written notes on her hand!
The show's legendary headwriter at the time(Harding Lemay) wrote that Jacqueline Courtney(Alice) was so sloppy in her work that her lines would be written on her hands of cuffs of a shirt rather than trying to memorize the dialogue. She's looking down so much to read her lines! But, this duo was daytime royalty at the time and about 10 million people were watching them every day.
Lemay's hubris made it impossible for him to admit when his writing failed. He repeatedly attacked actors who "dared" to protect their characters from a writer who did not understand them, or whose dialogue was ludicrous. Jacquie Courtney used "crib notes" to help her with lines, almost everybody did, but Lemay only complained when actors he didn't like did it. As the lead on the show, Courtney had reams of dialogue to memorize every day. Of course she found ways to ease the burden.
I loved it when the announcer would say things like "For the next 60 minutes, the continuing story of Another World" or ATWT or GL. And the dramatic music. For some reason it doesn't seem corny after all this time.
@adelgado75 I think it was actually at Steven & Alice's engagement party. Rachel got Alice alone in the room and viciously told her the news. OH, the drama. That period of Another World was about the best soaps ever were.
@markincapemay I agree, I was a mere 11 yrs old, but that scene in Alice's bedroom when she was sitting at her dressing table getting ready was a classic. What was hysterical, was the next episode where Ada asks Rachel, what r u going to do if Alice tells Russ?
@markincapemay Yes thats when I first started watching, too funny -Rachel was oblivious to the fact Alice could hold that over her head and tell Russ. Cant remember how it came out after that. Anyone remember??
@markincapemay Yes thats when I first started watching, too funny -Rachel was oblivious to the fact Alice could hold that over her head and tell Russ. Cant remember how it came out after that. Anyone remember?? Wonder what George is up to now in Penn..?
@my4ny Jacquie Courtney played Alice from the show's start in 1964-75, George Reinholt was Steven Frame and Robin Strasser(now Dorian on One Life to Live) was the original Rachel. Are there any scenes with Robin? I started watching in 1972 just as Victoria Wyndham came on.
@my4ny my favourite one was for ATWT (which didn't go to tape 'til the end of 1975): "And now for the next thirty minutes, presented LIVE, 'As the World Turns'". I was a kid, but I still remember it vividly. Knowing the actors were acting the scenes live as you were watching them was very exciting!
Let me ask you all a ? Does anyone remember when Audra Lindley (Helen Roper, Three's Company) portrayed Liz Matthews on Another World? And if so does anyone have any clips from her time on the show? I would love to see them
I never saw any clips but it was so amazing to know that she played a Nosy In Law on Another World and then she played a Nosy Landlady on Three's Company.
I remember Audra Lindley very well when she played Liz. She did everything in her power to break up her son Bill and his love Missy because she felt "Melissa" wasn't right for her son. Liz wanted lenore for Bill. Audra was fantastic and I would yell at the TV all the time at her. "All My Children's" Phoebe Tyler was inspried by Liz as both shows were written by Agnes Nixon. Ohhh the golden days of soaps!
