  • and that's what we call chops

  • thanks!

  • I love that Xymox pad. What a cool company!

  • Wow I never came across your channel. Good explanation!

  • I'm having trouble taking you seriously President of Poopie...

  • mute at 1:01 and just imagine what he is saying.

  • thank you!

  • Is this the techinique that some jazz and blues drummers use to do ghost notes?!

  • do buddy rich on 1 hand with jojo on the other. =D. go on!

  • isnt that much like a gravity blast without the rim?

  • it's very nice! bravo!!!!!!!!!

  • is he alive?

  • I have watched a few of your videos now- great teaching, cheers!

  • thak u...u r really a gud tutor...

  • lol u would be awesome with blast beats!

  • Dude, this us the moeller technique...not a one-handed roll. It's simply not fast enough to qualify as a roll. Rabb has a one-handed roll, which he calls the "freehand technique" that is fast enough. This is a sloppy and fast way of producing fast notes...not to criticize the hard-work and long man-hours that you put in. I personally don't find the moeller technique to be good for much more than ostentatious displays of sloppy speed that I can already single-stroke at the same speed.

  • But Derrick don't you think it's better the freehand technique (used by Rabb for example) than the Jojo one if u wanna make a one handed roll? U get more speed with the freehand technique I think because with the Jojo technique u need the hability of your hands really developed compared with "Rabb's technique" (dont know if he was the creator of that technique, this is why ")

By the way, awesome videos and explanations man, thanks a lot for spending time on it. Greetings from Barcelona, Spain!

  • can this technique be used for double stroke roll?

  • nice

  • it made me feel better when you messed up lol.

  • how many time does it takes to master the Jojo Mayer technique?

  • One or two lifes! :)

You know, it depends how many hours you study per day. It could take 3, 4 years, it could take less, more... it depends!

  • i think i might donate, i love your videos, you have a great way of explaining suck covert subtle things.

  • Thanks man , that really helped.

we could learn a lot from the president of poopie!

  • I've been drumming for 15 years and this is the best video demonstration I've seen!!! Thank you and keep on rockin' \m/

  • Nice video! Very helpful. Thanks!

  • moaller method ?

  • One is brittney spears the other is lindsay lohan. not porn!

    i think =X

    great vid btw

  • 16:22 Nice porn photos on the drum set ;)

  • how do u hold the drumstick in your left hand?? not very sure

  • It's the traditional grip. i dunno if you've found it yet, but he's done a video on that too.

  • thanks man, I like your way of teaching things to me, i like long explanatory lessons to clarify everything

  • Dude, keep teaching. Cheers.

  • HA! just noticed the chick pics tacked on to your practice kit...

  • doble man.......................

  • love the shirt

  • God my hands will not let the stick bounce back up, I feel like I now know what I've been doing wrong. Gotta' relax.

  • Thank you very much. That's the best push-pull lesson ive seen yet.

  • moment of silence . . . lol at 5:00

  • Merci.. Merci!

  • haha i've been playing matched grip all my life..12-13 years..i have this thing where i think i'm a super badass drummer but dude you blow my mind with all your videos..how long have you been playing ?

  • Derek, you are a star!

  • thanks a bunch man!

  • hilarious at 5:00

  • HAHA, i got blisters on all of my fingers ;D

  • I got a blister from practicing to much :D

  • MAYer not MEYer.

Nice video though. Helped me some.

  • brilliant bro!

  • derrick

just added my version of push pull match grip

    Tim

  • nice chicks on the roland ;)

  • Hahahahaha 8:54 Prrrrrrrr!

  • Thanks for the video, excellent explanations.

Just a problem I'm having, when I'm practicing the push open technique, my thumb keeps sliding up and down the stick, especially when I try to relax my hand. Any suggestions?

  • if it's your left hand you just need to squeeze your thumb more against the side of your hand

  • Hey man very nice video - thouroughly explained and informative! Do you play in a band?

  • Amen to that

  • Derrick, great instruction! I've seen Freddy Guber's students do the this, and your expl. is the best do far!

  • 19 min?!

  • i like your stewie t shirt i love family guy

  • wow now that some good explaining

  • you are an amazing teacher man. great vids keep them coming.

  • Rofl at 5:05...great video though =D

  • jaaja pinche burro

  • i'm not much of a rudimentary drummer, but i must say you have helped!

  • Belgium loves you Derrick

  • Could you make a video on how to control the one handed roll to make it sound like really fast triplets??

  • I totally agree dude..u should teach

  • i'm pretty sure he does

  • I agree, but wouldn't this count as teaching? lol

  • set up a web site youll be rich

  • hey i dont know if you know of benny greb, but you should check him out. he has craZy one handed rolls and it would be great if you could maybe do a lesson on it.

  • Master!esse cara é fera!!!Thank you,......from Brazil.

  • Dude, I love you.

  • This is so awesome! never stop teaching ^^

  • DAMN, YOU ROCK!

you solved all my queries on Moeller.

    thanks a million!

    =)

  • Sorry I mean "Marco Pitruzzella"

  • Watch any video of Marco Pitruzella and you'll easily be able to learn the one-handed role technique. He does it very fast and with a lot of power, and there are videos of him doing it from a sideways view, which makes it very easy to see how he does it.

  • its pronouced jojo mayer not jojo maiyer

  • lol doesnt matter

  • Whats up Derrick ^_^

I dont even play drums but I understood this lesson....cuz you know what ur talkin about &you teach very well

Keep the videos commin bro...GOOD STUFF! \m/

    -peace

  • i can imagine what you mean - he totally lacks ANY pretence or bullshit and yes for the impatient 20 minutes might be longer than those 1minute smaple videos from Hudson Music but at least like a teacher he's going over it until you get it and reinforces it - only a teacher in real life could mimic that.

  • I'm a drum teacher in DC area... Kudos! I learn by watching your excellent videos! Listen up kids! Going to research you more myself... keep it comin

  • u r a good teacher....good drummer but u talk too much

  • 5min02= LOL

  • except that with your thumb on top and using it to push down on the stick and then sliding it forward you can go even faster with more consistency... that's really not even fast enough to be considered a one-handed-roll...

that's for match grip of course

  • would you say that most,if not all,the things you can do with traditional can be done with matched and visa versa?

  • due, i put you on my contacts list, i hope i could find you there some day!! good teaching!

  • Great teacher. I hope you can make a living of it someday.

  • you are an excellent teacher/explainer

  • Mr Pope...thanks a lot! I like people who can break things down in to easy packet gulps of the whole package! Excellent ground work. A lot of people who try to teach the essence of sticks take the minutae detail for granted...I has previously listened to David Weckl...he explains it but at the same time you realise he doesn't because he skips the nitpick detail assuming it's justs 'common sense' to pick up like most experts do.

    Again thanks!

  • can u do the roll with right hand? i mean i'd like to learn to be able to do these rolls with both my hands.

  • wow dude you are really good explaining!!!!

  • wow! really great vid! just a question on the left hand roll. do you re grip the stick during the second hit, or do you get the stick after?

  • thanks dude ;)

  • this video helped out alot, if you have time check out my video on the one handed roll. And please tell me if im on the right track!

  • lol Nice pics on your drum set at 13:50.

  • whoa dude.... cool man i've been trying this for like 1.5 years man.

  • So one handed rolls can pretty much just be fast constant doubles?

  • u filled in the blanks the pro's tend to cover way to fast! Thanx. vid responce: am I doing it right or wrong?

  • i like this guy

  • i'm not gonna die without mastering that!!! *roar*

  • I wish you would reply to emails.

You make it so much easier to learn the more seemingly difficult techniques.

  • A you may not know me but i appreaciate your video because it really boosted my learning in drumming

  • hey, man!!what´s up!! keep up with good work, thanks, im getting better on my chops, thanks to this video and jojos mayers guru!!heheh i like the way you explain it its easier to understand it than on jojo "guru" video!!

    cheers from Portugal!!

  • this is sooooo useful

  • ive been drumming for about 8yrs already..and i just learned the single-handed roll (just this week!)..some videos of johnny rabb (the well known single-hand-drum-roller-guy) shows him doing it on the hi-hats! argh..do you know how he does it? teach me how!! XD

  • nice shirt.

  • Man, it's great that you have the balls to leave the 'non warmed up bits' in, lol:) That's so cool and shows that you're genuine. Thanks a million for the videos, great stuff!

  • haha "President of Poopie"...anyways...nice drumming man..

  • HABLAS DEMASIADO,,,,

  • Make it musical or I will kill you!! lol nice dude, I think I'm just gunna watch your vids since they help me out the most =]

  • i dont speak english but...what do you think...that...the bests books to play drum...

can you tell me a list?of the best books¿

  • Great stuff, thanks for taking the time to record and post these!

  • he have womans pictures un his drums?? (~11:20)

  • haha, Freaky, huh? haha!

  • would you rather me have men's pictures?

sorry steve gadd, you're the man and all, but i'd just rather look at britney. :)

  • HEHEHE i have only a skull in my drumkit, and its an eletronic kit too, a staffdrum VWS9, with DM5 Alesis and some b20 cynbals...

  • 05:05 that part was hilariouus X]

  • ... one handed roll starts at 13:30

  • thank you

  • thanks for the info buddy. i was able to improve my moeller technique. keep it up.

  • LOOK at my one handed roll!

  • i'm able to keep the motion with both hands, left hand traditional as well, but for some reason, my muscles tense up a lot and it wears me out when going fast, is that normal? maybe I miss that in the video.

  • Haha, very good video. Even drummers have to think sometimes. How long have you learnt, what kind of music you play in? x

  • Ur the best seriously amazing <3 u

  • the fulcram for moeller should be towards the back of the hand, the thumb and first finger dont do anything, the idea is that the stick has its own motion, there is no squeezing or "pressure" involved, squeezing means strain, and that means you are stopping the sticks resonace...thats what i believe

  • I have the Roland TD 20 V Pro - Derrick has the 8 I thnk. He plays circles around me.

    Something wrong with this picture.

  • Very Very Nice!

  • man I want to be able to do that

  • Wow, very cool. Interesting that JOJO Mayer is featured this months issue (January 2008) of MD. PLEASE KEEP it UP!!!!

  • screw u this guy is awsome

  • Cool vids dude! Thx a lot for posting these!

  • anybody else seen the girls on the drumkit? haha, anyway great vid man

  • its britney spears i think. im pretty sure its her

  • hey ilove this video, but cfould you do another one of you using these techniques on the electric kit? ive got primarily an electric kit right now and i want to be sure that i can practice these on it

  • thank you so much im going to start practicing your tips

  • Hey Derrick i remember your video on moeller. It was the best free video on that technique. Iv'e been increasing speed and power whith yours an Dan's help.

I never thought I could reach this kind of level. Hope to keep seeing you and Dan spreading the word and continue helping drummers as you did for me.

  • You should make a video on single stroke roll technique.

  • thank u so much dood this helps alot

  • Good teaching video. Thanks and God Bless.

  • man, you should be on TV!

  • this was a great video!

as for the double-stroke bass technique he mentions at the end, I learned it accidentally. it's all about heel-toe motion,

you guys should check out my latin rhythm using this technique with one foot that I just posted up.

  • :@ i always get rests inbetween hits when i do it. any idea how i can fix it?

  • so helpfull

  • Great Job with these vids I'm a new drummer learning a lot from you

    GOD Bless

  • derrick!!! i have learned a lot from you...thanks man! youre the coolest pope everr!!!

  • an interesting way of putting it would be a geometry reference. Just like in geometry when two objects are similar, they are proportionately the same, angles remain the same, etc. So it's the same motion but it's on a smaller scale just like a small triangle with the same 3 angles but smaller sides than a large triangle are similar, and proportionate. GREAT LESSON

  • yeah i need help on traditional also, its going fine, cause i can play some regular songs with it...but its taking some time to get used to.

  • Big help, thanks

  • as far as the request thing goes, im not sure. anything to help build left hand(traditional) strength. i started out matched and need help badly on traditional. and your good at it so yup. oh and i love the Britney Spears pics on the drumrack haha. been wanting to comment on that for a while.

  • i love the vids you put out man. they all have helped me so far. the heel/toe video helped alot(i personay can get faster by doing the continuous release with a modification going. ive been told its an alternative version of the swivel(what i do) ive always wanted to do the O/C(1handed-roll) and ive studied Buddy Richs vids alot so i think you nailed that spot on. you help people like me alot. keep the vids going. when the dvd comes out id love to know where to get it and how much.

  • Another great demo - much appreciated - thanks!

  • derrick you monstr

  • thank you so much! you are doing great job!!

  • damn left hand :(

  • really cool!!

  • Nice!!! I would like to see something to make independent my hands and feet.

  • Great stuff, Derrick. What kind of pad is that, btw?

  • Amazing.. I wa practicing these techniques LITERALLY DURING THE VIDEO and I recognized my weak hand becoming more like my dominmant hand. I was definitley gainign more control! Amzaing! Just as long as I concentrated on doing what he said, I was gettign better control! Thanks so much for posting these!

  • You're doing a really cool thing by posting these.

  • your lessons make me so good, i fucking love it

  • Great teacher!

he can make techniques very clear in a couple of minutes.

  • Great videos Derrick, you're a great instructor!

I got a question. When you are doing the Moeller technique in the beginning, are you allowing your hands to slightly move up and down as the rebounds happen? It seems like thats the only way I can do it without losing the momentum.

  • Awsome. Derrick, your vid's are superb. your doing a massive service to those drummers that don't understand the basic principles to these techniques, myself included. keep up the good work dude.

  • Looking good Derrick, finally you've gotten these on YouTube so you can reach about a bazillion viewers!

  • Thats the goal aahz, get a bigger audience for the dvd release.
