Dude, this us the moeller technique...not a one-handed roll. It's simply not fast enough to qualify as a roll. Rabb has a one-handed roll, which he calls the "freehand technique" that is fast enough. This is a sloppy and fast way of producing fast notes...not to criticize the hard-work and long man-hours that you put in. I personally don't find the moeller technique to be good for much more than ostentatious displays of sloppy speed that I can already single-stroke at the same speed.
But Derrick don't you think it's better the freehand technique (used by Rabb for example) than the Jojo one if u wanna make a one handed roll? U get more speed with the freehand technique I think because with the Jojo technique u need the hability of your hands really developed compared with "Rabb's technique" (dont know if he was the creator of that technique, this is why ")
By the way, awesome videos and explanations man, thanks a lot for spending time on it. Greetings from Barcelona, Spain!
haha i've been playing matched grip all my life..12-13 years..i have this thing where i think i'm a super badass drummer but dude you blow my mind with all your videos..how long have you been playing ?
Just a problem I'm having, when I'm practicing the push open technique, my thumb keeps sliding up and down the stick, especially when I try to relax my hand. Any suggestions?
hey i dont know if you know of benny greb, but you should check him out. he has craZy one handed rolls and it would be great if you could maybe do a lesson on it.
Watch any video of Marco Pitruzella and you'll easily be able to learn the one-handed role technique. He does it very fast and with a lot of power, and there are videos of him doing it from a sideways view, which makes it very easy to see how he does it.
i can imagine what you mean - he totally lacks ANY pretence or bullshit and yes for the impatient 20 minutes might be longer than those 1minute smaple videos from Hudson Music but at least like a teacher he's going over it until you get it and reinforces it - only a teacher in real life could mimic that.
except that with your thumb on top and using it to push down on the stick and then sliding it forward you can go even faster with more consistency... that's really not even fast enough to be considered a one-handed-roll...
Mr Pope...thanks a lot! I like people who can break things down in to easy packet gulps of the whole package! Excellent ground work. A lot of people who try to teach the essence of sticks take the minutae detail for granted...I has previously listened to David Weckl...he explains it but at the same time you realise he doesn't because he skips the nitpick detail assuming it's justs 'common sense' to pick up like most experts do.
hey, man!!what´s up!! keep up with good work, thanks, im getting better on my chops, thanks to this video and jojos mayers guru!!heheh i like the way you explain it its easier to understand it than on jojo "guru" video!!
ive been drumming for about 8yrs already..and i just learned the single-handed roll (just this week!)..some videos of johnny rabb (the well known single-hand-drum-roller-guy) shows him doing it on the hi-hats! argh..do you know how he does it? teach me how!! XD
Man, it's great that you have the balls to leave the 'non warmed up bits' in, lol:) That's so cool and shows that you're genuine. Thanks a million for the videos, great stuff!
i'm able to keep the motion with both hands, left hand traditional as well, but for some reason, my muscles tense up a lot and it wears me out when going fast, is that normal? maybe I miss that in the video.
the fulcram for moeller should be towards the back of the hand, the thumb and first finger dont do anything, the idea is that the stick has its own motion, there is no squeezing or "pressure" involved, squeezing means strain, and that means you are stopping the sticks resonace...thats what i believe
hey ilove this video, but cfould you do another one of you using these techniques on the electric kit? ive got primarily an electric kit right now and i want to be sure that i can practice these on it
Hey Derrick i remember your video on moeller. It was the best free video on that technique. Iv'e been increasing speed and power whith yours an Dan's help.
I never thought I could reach this kind of level. Hope to keep seeing you and Dan spreading the word and continue helping drummers as you did for me.
an interesting way of putting it would be a geometry reference. GREAT LESSON

i love the vids you put out man. they all have helped me so far. the heel/toe video helped alot(i personay can get faster by doing the continuous release with a modification going. ive been told its an alternative version of the swivel(what i do) ive always wanted to do the O/C(1handed-roll) and ive studied Buddy Richs vids alot so i think you nailed that spot on. you help people like me alot. keep the vids going. when the dvd comes out id love to know where to get it and how much.
Amazing.. I wa practicing these techniques LITERALLY DURING THE VIDEO and I recognized my weak hand becoming more like my dominmant hand. I was definitley gainign more control! Amzaing!
