Cool to see the ships animated, but were the distances intentionally scaled so far down? The wedges should be way further out and far larger than they are shown here. Combat ranges were in the area of fifteen to sixty three million kilometers for Manticorian missiles. Also I don't believe the laser warheads burst in a spread pattern like that.
Well I know that if the devs are smart they will not want to move forward on anything without Dave's approval, and he is a very busy guy. Another author I know mentioned that they cannot see how he can keep the writing schedule he keeps let alone the other things he is involved in. PS I Have been waiting for this game for 2+ years and they are real slow.
Love this demo. I am so looking forward the Honor Harrington tv series when it comes out. I heard a rumor that Claudia Christian from babylon 5 series might be playing honor. But personally I think Scarlett Johansson would be a better choice. She looks more like honor plus her recent movie Iron Man 2 show she could kick ass just as good as Honor aswell just as Happy Hogan.
I'm a big fan of the books and have been looking forward to what the online RPG could offer. Sadly, it's starting to look like the developers have bitten off more than they can chew. There have been few if any updates over the past year and the site is starting to fill up with spam postings. Would be nice to see something come of this but, based on current evidence, I'm not hopeful.
Depends which year, which nation, Prometh- the bow and sidewalls are a relatively new development. You get some backwards planet in the Selsian confed territority probably won't have it. The Andie's it'd be a tossup. Foakers is still trying to make it work for the Peeps.
Much as I would love to see this project completed I think it is safe to assume its dead in space. There have been no site updates for over a year and no word indicating any forward progress. Someone needs to buy up this property and run with it.
Great example of ambition exceeding ability. interesting idea, but they didn't even plan to offer any sort of direct control over battles. I'd rather see a proper tactical simulator than a galaxploitation game. Has anyone seen Jutland, by Storm Eagle Studios? Substitute space ships and add a 3rd dimension and I'd be thrilled.
For being such Weber/HH afficianado, I can't believe that I only just now found out about this proposed game. Hope Dave and the designers take all the comments here in a constructive light, as I'd really like to see this project come to fruition. As a long time EVE player (4 yrs) the Honorverse would be a welcome addition to the space MMORG genre, if doen correctly. Dave, please keep tight design control on our Honor.
havnet read the books but 'Realistic' space combat makes me snore .'Missiles fired, Kay three hours until we know if they hit !' rather then the star wars or Trek style space combat
Good idea.. wrong approach! Somehow this video makes me completely unexcited about this project despite my love for the Honor Harrington books... A) The scale is completely off, B) The ship move without any inertia and turn on a dime without continuing to travel along their existing vector, C) Ship damage looks lame as hell, especially considering how well described it is in the books D) Impeller wedges look terribly unimaginative
im sorry, this looks like crap... a huge pile of it. Whats with those big shields things? that's nothing like in the books... the guys making this have no talent whatsoever to make a game or know how to actually make it "look" fun...
The shields are the impeller wedges!!! You know the bands of trapped, distorted artificial gravity. Commonly referred to as "the wedge" one below and one above angling away from the ship forming (thats right) A WEDGE! They're also impenetrable by any known weapon forming a shield when a captain rolls ship to interpose them with enemy fire.
Clearly you did not quite understand the space battles if you are complaining about " big shields things" that are "nothing like in the books". lol
@woodstock179 not quite true. As the term "wedge" implies, the shields are not flat rectangles above und below the ship but rather like segments of the peel of a hollow pumpkin.
I guess there's a whole lot we dont know about what exactly is going on in this clip. But to be honest, I think in a PC game I'd take being able to see all my ships over faithfulness to the scale in the books.
Maybe add a little thing like "this is not what it looks like in real life, this is a holographic representation for the convenience of the tac officer. That'd work for me.
Well, from the description on the website, this sounds like it is more of an online "empire building" game than a fleet battle tactical game. I am guessing that this is more of an "action shot" than represenative of what will be gameplay, and even if they show fleet battles, I think that it is more likely they will resemble a holo-tank's tactical plot than anything else.
Regarding the impeller wedges and the quality of the graphics.
First of all, impeller wedges are not normally visable as a light-emitting square like that (light-distorting, maybe) but that is not necessarily apparent to someone who is not experienced with the Honorverse. This shows their effect clearly.
Secondly, they probably are deliberately keeping the graphics low-requirement so it will run on a broader-base of machines, so even people with out-of-date hardware can run it.
i imagined them as more of an arc around the "top" and "bottom of the ship, widest in the center, that narrowed on either end, thus forming wedges. those bands look human made. ergo, sidewalls. though they do say that impeller bands are invisible...
Well, we can hope it's more of a pre-alpha pre-visualization. As for how it should look, look up the wikipedia article on gravitational lensing for starters (basically the impeller wedge should be visible only as a sharp distortion of the background image)
Nope. The impeller wedge is open more at the bow of the ship. And actually those are Reliant-class Battlecruisers - like HMS Nike form Short Victorious War. Behold my geek-ness
The screen? the destroyers in a BatCruRon or BatCruDiv screen are usually way too far away from the BCs to be seen in this clip. As for any cruisers, maybe Pavel Young was commanding them and went away somewhere to unload his bowels and bladder. What I'd like to know is why are they using countermissiles instead of point-defense lasers that close to the ship?
While it is true that the scale of distance shown in the trailer is not appropriate, that distorted scale is also necessary. This trailer appears to have goals of showing the tactical effect of the impeller wedge, showing the action of laser warheads, and showing that counter-missiles are involved in point-defense. It has to sacrifice some scale of distance in order to fit everything in there visably.
I can't help but think those ships look like giant sex toys :/

Oooh the wedges are wrong, the scale is off, they're BC not DN, blah blah blah. I have only 1 question. It's July 2011, where is the fucking game?

Nice, except...
Shouldn't the wedges be ~200km square? (ref Echoes of Honor, ch. 29)
