Richard Tucker - HaTikvah - Israeli National Anthem

Absolutely, Judaism is not only a religion, but also a Nationality, and so much more to Jews. As a Jew of notoriety (and one of the greatest tenors of all time) Richard Tucker would have felt honor bound, and also honored, to sing Hatikvah. And, he SHOULD be listed as a "Jewish Tenor", singing in Hebrew, the Israeli National Anthem.

So beautiful! I have an old record of him singing Israeli songs (including Hatikvah, the older version) and "Goldfaden Songs" in Yiddish on the other side. :)

This is an interesting arrangement of Hatikva, higher key than it is usually played and at a faster tempo. Tucker singing fantastically as always.

@specialcar77 Sorry, I did not clarify. Besides, the '12 tribes' was used in ancient times to distinguish the peoples descended from the 12 sons of Jacob. This doesn't really apply to modern Jews, and hasn't been for almost 2500 years (or so I understand).

@specialcar77 U r right. In modern times, no Jew says I am from the tribe of Israel. You might find that in the Bible. Tribe of Abraham is another antique designation. And also Jews have been known as "Hebrews." (different theories of derivation for "Hebrew." There were 12 tribes of Jacob's 12 sons. But ten were lost when conquered in war. There were two kingdoms north and south. the kingdom dominated by descendants of Jacob's son, Judah, was conquered and the tribes of Judah LOST.

Bjorling was not Catholic anyhow but Protestant but I think it is because Jewish is a religion and an ethnic group also. Even many Jews argue about that but This is a Israeli Jewish song . Tucker was Jewish so maybe that's why . When Jussi sings Sverige  they often refer to him as the Swedish tenor

Why does it say Jewish Tenor? Shouldn't it say American Tenor? You don't see people saying "Catholic Tenor Jussi Bjoerling" do you? Just looking for consistency is all.

Catholism is a religion, Judaism is a nationality, the religious customes of the Jews were called in modern times when religions had a name "Judaism" and not the opposite way - Historicaly, it's not the people who accepted Judaism upon them who are Jews but it was called Judaism since it was the relgious customes/culture of the Jewish people.

@misolico Israel has only been a nationality since 1940 something. and they put it smack dab in the middle of Palestine. So in my book, it's a religion. Israel is the nationality.

The UN plan of division of Palestine of 1947 did not talk about the "Israeli" people and the arab people but on the Jewish people and the Arab people (yes, not jewish vs muslim but jewish vs arab as recognizing they're both nationalities) not to mention the Balfour declaration 1917 which speaks of "the establishment in Palestine of a National home for the Jewish PEOPLE". The Jews existed as a Nation LONG before modern Israel.

In addition to what I said, until this very day on Israeli ID there is "Nationality: Jewish" or any other nationality like arab or others, there is no "Israeli" Nationality officialy in Israel what so ever. Plus you can be an Atheist Jew and so on.

They did not split anything merley because there was never a "Palestinian" rule of "Palestinians" over Palestine. 78% of Palestine was basically taken in 1921 by the Brits that gave it to the Saudian king Abdullah.

Not to mention Arab immigration to the area who were cheap labor for the brits anyways, I see where ur heading and I dont feel like having such a serious discussion over youtube comments, enjoy ur day!

@seektheforce The Israelis did not split up anything. There has been a continuing Jewish presence there for more than three thousand years. The Palestinians did not get there until the late nineteenth century. Besides, Israel's independence was granted by the United Nations. That was not the case with Pakistan, which was originally a part of India. If any country has no right to exist, it's Pakistan.

@seektheforce The tribe of Israel has existed for thousands of years. If you ask any Jew he will tell you he belongs to the tribe of Israel, rather than the Jewish faith. Those who 'convert' are accepted into the tribe. So essentially it is an ethnic group that practices the religion of Judaism. Regarding the conflict between modern day Israel and Palestine, it's hard to get an unbiased opinion from either side as it is a sensitive subject. Take everything with a grain of salt.

@GermanOperaSinger A modern Jew: highly unlikely to identify him/herself as "tribe of Israel." People say "I am Jewish." True: Modern Jews don't identify with of any of the 12 tribes. Especially 'cause Jews divided into two groups north and south and ten tribes were forever LOST— so far. BUT among traditional Jews, a Jew will know from which of three groups he/she is descended. Kohanim (priests), Levites (priests and keepers of the temple), Yisroaelim (the non-priests or congregation).

@misolico Not sure what U r saying about Judaism. Judaism is the religion. Jewish refers to the ethnic group that practices Judaism. Or Jewish means someone who is a practicing member of Judaism. Judaism and Jewish derive from Judah, the name of one of Jacob's sons, which was also a name for one of the ancient kingdoms of Israelites.

Jews, gernally speaking, are an Ethno-Religious group,A Nation.

concerning Jussi, we say:"Swedish Tenor" because he's Sweidish in his origin.

Tucker is Jewish by origin and singing a Jewish-Hebrew song- Our enthem, no less...it's VERY fitting..

If anything, the description could say Jewish-American.

I want to add that his Recording (studio) of the Kol Nidre and Passover holiday singing is not really close to his actual singing of it in Temple for those who heard him do it live with the all male Chorus and the more Conservative Cantorial singing of the great Cantors of the past, more Cadenza's and more singing then the recorded more Reformed versions available but none of his live Holiday singing in temple from the high Holidays is available unfortunately. It was quite an experience .

Lets hope for peace even though it may not come in my time at my age of 68. Tucker was a wonderful Cantor, his Hebrew was perfect and I heard him conduct services as a Cantor just 3 mos. before he suddenly died at age 61 . His singing from an emotional standpoint was at it's best at those services in 1974. I heard him everyday that Sept. in Chicago and it was as though he knew it would be his last, if he did he never mentioned it to anyone.
