I found a free app for ipod touch that works better i think. Its called pinger phone. You cant use the text option, but the IM option works just as well. And you can use the contacts on your ipod touch. Try it out.

When you send texts, you obviously have to be on the AIM.

You can receive them on your AIM when you're off the application but there won't be any notifications or any sign that you received one. But when you go back to the AIM application, the text will be there.

I don't think its free. A few days ago I tested it out, send a message to a friend through the AIM application. Then I checked my AT&T Account and in the Text/IM record appeared that I sent and received message from a number that I never heard of(it must be from AIM), meaning that AT&T counted that IM from AIM as a regular text message.
