  • My first impression was like: "Hey! this is like paying to view sites!" but then I realized that you don't have to click the button if you don't want to. Great idea! Pirate bay is one of the sites I will support for sure!

  • Is that Timbuktu's voice?

  • Flattr: not for poor people.

  • what happened to the voice @ 1:14?

  • The guy talking in the video is a rapper, Timbuktu. Look him up!

  • I don't see people signing up in masses to use this service, sure there's incentive for developers.. but where's the incentive for the content viewers?

  • @SirCharcoal Have you never thought: "This thing is awesome!!, he/she should get money for this."

Provides an easy way to give a small amount, its just one click, thats all it takes.

Thats like walking by a street performer, his performance is so good that you stop for a while and listen. Maybe you were in a bad mood and his music lightened your spirit a bit. Oh, you have a coin in your pocket? You toss the coin in the guitar case.

Flattr is the internet's equivalent of that.

  • this is the future. people will no longer pay artists to buy art, they will donate to support them because they want more of their work, which will be free.

  • @ri394 the utopia of the internet. is it plausible though?

  • Of course the "cake" is money...I understand it perfectly, and it seems to me a great great idea! This kind of initiatives are the future of art in internet! One question, how Flatrr wins money? I couldn't find it in the website...

  • I think this is a Brilliant idea and I love the speakers accent so adorable. I could just hug him <3

  • Airborne Music?

  • Come on guys, of course the "cake" will be your money..

Badly explained by the video though.. but still.. you are the baker of the cake..

you hopefully did figure that out :)

  • the guy's voice is so annoying.

  • Its a great thing, and it works

  • Soooo... who pays the money? That's not clearly explained.

  • @LordVidra eeerm ...... you?

  • Did I understand this right? In Sweden, there's a large river flowing with birthday cake?

  • i see that i'm not the first thinking about " the cake is a lie", GG others !!!

  • Yes! donny's list, an innovation in education, you will have your own profiles soon by signing up, and the directory is free to join! We need more thumbs up!

  • Can I get paid in cake?

  • @Ninjaboyz128 Hahahaha

  • Mmmmm yummy cake... XD rofl

  • can i get send some cake?

  • Нихрена не понял....

  • Swedish people are so stupid! They don't understand that the cake is a lie..

  • Anybody know what software was used to create this video? Or what software you could use to create something comparable?

  • #EPIC win?

  • awesome idea

  • @linklovezelda Then in words of your language: Shut up! Your opinion is not asked.

  • I don't care how you say Sweden...

  • Why are people comparing PayPal and Flattr?

Flattr is solely a donation service for independent developers.

PayPal is simply for safe and easy online money transactions.

  • @Themattman4494 Because you can give donations through paypal too, and it's even easier to do it that way, than using flattr.

  • I'm a student with no regular income. Can I use Flattr prepaid style?

  • @cordia96 Yeap! I just did so myself for €2,-

I just feel like giving people money for their work, even when its just the minimum ammount I can spare. And this way you can donate all you want, without having to worry about the money adding up each month.

    I love it!

  • WTF FTW

  • nice #FTW

  • The cake is a lie.

  • This is may well be a very very important company going forwards!

    Flattr.com = Paypal destroyer?

  • the cake is a lie

  • This is a brilliant idea. Absolutely brilliant. :)

  • Our children's children may learn about this AWESOME concept in school.

Maybe I'm just an idealist/optimist/utopist, but I have the persistant feeling that this is a HUGE step to a better economy. Let's reinvent the market, spread the word ;)

  • Wait, then why would it be a fixed amount? Why not just do what Kongregate did but everywhere: You enter the amount you want to give. That way if there’s less (and less great) content, you pay less, and when there’s more that’s worth the money, you pay more. Duh!

Why do all those projects always stop halfway through the thinking process and go “Let’s do this!”? The starting idea is obviously great. But you *have to think it through to the end*!

  • @Evi1M4chine what you just described is called a DONATION button, and it's been around for ages.

  • the cake is a lie!

  • hahaha perfekt us dialekt...och så plötsligt...på klingande Malmöitiska "många bäckar små..."kool idé med flattr, Tack!

  • good call. great voice.

  • good call. great voice.

  • I would spend money for this. Fucking A+ idea.

  • #greatone

  • OUTSTANDING idea!

  • Timbutu:s voice? :)

  • The whole reason this system works is simply because you are storing or "locking in" monetary value away from the atrocity that is the Federal Reserve Note and into "Flattr" a, hopefully, non-manipulated form of currency.

  • such a high fee...forget it.

  • I think this is a great idea and an awesome way to help grow the things you love...

  • brilliant.

  • una idea maravillosa!!! los apoyaré...

    Tremendo producto...

  • flattr is fucking retarded

  • I love it. Just set up my own account.

  • Isn't it Timbuktu who is narrating the video?

  • @salivhoran

    Yes, it is.

  • song ??????

  • Genialiskt!

  • I could just nick their shit for free and not pay them at all.

  • The problem with flattr are the high fees. That is and will stay their only problem, if they still want to make some (okay: a lot) of money.

  • @TheyCallMeMoeper Agreed, 10 % is to high. But as they have said that they will lower that fee as more people join, i can accept that fo now.

  • "give me your money, I'll give it to people you wanted to give it"

  • this is more than a wonderful idea. It's like an almost perfect system for Internet! :D

  • SWEDEN Fuck yeah!

  • @DoubleTuna swedes are gay

  • @RainStyle967

    americunt spotted

  • @DoubleTuna From the UK retard.

  • Hey guys, wanna help out? Tell your favorite web-content creators about flattr.

  • The cake is a LIE.

  • @SkullFace72 The cake is a... PIE!

  • @proceedapathy HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH wanker

  • This is an amazing idea!

  • this should be called SCAMR

    str8 bullsh*t

  • nice idea, too bad they're too stupid to tell you what the subscription amount is before you register.

    $1 a month? Sure. $20 a month? GTFO

  • @lifehackertips As far as I understood you have to pay at least 2€ a month or your account will freeze (so this money you have to spend ... if you don't flattr anything that month it goes to charity). In Addition they keep 10% of the transactions (will maybe get less with more users). Oh and if you have a blog and you want a flattr button you also have to play those 2€ a month ... so it's kinda the same for both sides.

  • Great idea, I'm now a flattr user :)

  • Typo alert: "besides[sic] the cake"

  • als ob das web aus gutmenschen bestünde...der artikel erscheint erst, wenn der flattr-button gedrückt wird, so sollt 's sein!

  • Great idea, but theres one problem.

    The cake is a lie.

  • @Muotka Dammit. I was gonna say that. Good job Portal Fan :D :D

  • Dude, YES. I'm getting people to change over. Paypal just isn't worth the effort compared to the ease and convenience of Flattr!

*ahem* no, I am not a spokesperson. I just have had horrid experiences with Paypal. >)<

  • @Jyagos1 But according to their site, Paypal is one of the two methods to charge your Flattr account, not to mention the only way to withdraw money you have received? I don't like Paypal either. It's a monster that's gotten too big to care about the customers they squish under their feet.

Flattr was created by one of the Pirate Bay folks. Their FAQ says you can only use it to submit content you own. Irony or lesson learned?

  • This is really, really clever and I love it!

  • I'm going to become a member, this is amazing!

  • @WaffleEgo

What tha f**k are you talking about?

  • SUPPORT.

  • I want to Flattr this video, like, now.

  • Love it, but there's a grammar error: "besides the content" should be "besides the content".

  • Soeben angemeldet :) mathe-lernen.de.ms ;P

  • And if I don't click the the Flattr button a whole month Flattr will divide by zero?

  • @595o

That's preposterous! You can't divide by zero! Take your heathen math somewhere else.

  • RELLIZE IT.

    and we will pay

  • Yeah, but WHO will be actually paying? There is no info on this...

  • Gute Idee ...

  • Stunning idea <3

  • royalties, then!

  • This guy was branded as a devil by the copyright zealots. They wasted so much time, money and effort on him instead of fixing the situation...as he has tried to do now. These grey-suit execs will never understand the web, therefore they will always be one step behind

  • I think it shows the way creators will be paid in the future.

Such a service is nice to be used as an example (or target) in the discussion for piracy and the Intellectual Property Rights.

  • Cake was a lie!!!!! :(

  • @drewx123 The Cake "is" a lie.

  • its like youtube but every one gets a part of the cake nom nom nom :P

  • great idea

  • #FTW

  • Huge opportunity to Leap passed Paypal for online transactions. Paypal has lost so much business to poor customer service.

The Flattr idea is a great way to support "Creative Content"! I hope you can keep the cost low and gather participants in the Tens of Millions.

I just registered for an Invite. Thanks for the tip Micah.

  • so stupid!! why should i give the 10% to flattr?? what for?

  • @mastaX89

i agree, 10% without max amount is pretty ripoff, especially when you consider who they are taking from.

  • Great idea, however it's not a Paypal system - it's a donation system. Think of it like 'altruistic payments' to the people you want to show your interest to.

  • I love this idea!

  • This has absolutely nothing to do with a micropayment system. It's a donation system. I like the idea, but don't call it micropayment.

  • Awesome stuff. I signed up today for my music and video content. :)

  • THE CAKE IS A LIE!

Just kidding, this is an amazing idea and a shining example of the spirit of the internet. I wish you all the best :)

  • It's the same background music used in the MacBook Unibody-Video by Apple, but how is the song called?

  • sounds good

  • Guys, pardon my language, but, f'cking AMAZING idea. I'm sooo sick of Paypal, its such a joke. And this is, how I think paying for digital content and media should happen.

  • @mbe102

You still need Paypal or another System to transfer the money to flattr. And try to compare the costs for paypal and flattr :)

It's a damn stupid system with no added value and to much overhead cost.

  • @mbe102 Agreed! Fucking amazing idea and good video. Screw PayPal, cowardly bastards.

  • #Flattr sounds great!

  • Amazing idea. Thank you !!! :)

  • you guys have been around for a while, like us. keep up the great work.

  • Really good service, this could be big!

  • This could be a revolution on how to make money on the web, when you do something nice. I hope people see this for what i can become.

  • Great idea. I love it.

  • I hope this site takes off.

  • cool!

  • I think you don't understand the concept here, the criticism you are giving seems to be more against other forms of donating like paypal than this. Why this idea is brilliant in it's simplicity is because you have a flatrate, and you can divide that flatrate over an X amount of people for a Y amount of content. When people don't have to do a lot but click a button to donate, they will do it a lot sooner. And even if everybody just has 5 dollars a month to spend, with 200 million people...

  • I heard it to.. some high profile company... annoys me not knowing which video... anyone?

  • I heard this song before. What's its name? I'm pretty sure I heard it in a video from Google or something like that.

  • This is one of the dumbest ideas ever. If I wan't to purchase art I can and have been able to for a very, very, very long time. There isn't really a problem and no one needs to solve it. Good luck...

  • @flashchrome It is a great idea, take for example music, the music market today is controlled by big companies, but with flattr it depends on what people like, if people like the music it becomes popular, and so on, there is so much more great music out there that will never reach the top, but now the creators of that music can get money for it and therefore buy better equipment to make better music :)

  • @imbahzor. Well, paying for music have never been a problem really. The problem have been the total marketing of commercial music such as the one that is being played over and over and over on any selectable music tv or radio channel. Obviously a very small market can be reach with this system, but myspace, youtube, twitter and all other channels are allready proving that even good music have a very hard time and it is _free_.

  • @flashchrome If you made music and alot of people liked it, wouldnt it be nice to be payed for it, and if flattr really hits it big time, that music might be the music we see on tv or listen to on radio one day...

  • @imbahzor. Yes it would be very nice, but have been working with art in various forms (no, I'm not an artist, but I work with them) since the early eighties and I know how hard it is for a band who want to succeed commercially to do just that.

Obviously it would be nice to get a couplke of dollars from friends and the various listeners who want to donate money. )

  • @imbahzor. As mentioned previously most bands do have myspace/facebook pages today and if the would succeed commercially I do not think falttr would do any differenc in any way due to the fact that they would already be "signed" on to the major labels (or what ever you mean by radio/tv

  • @flashchrome Good job on COMPLETELY missing the point! Have a cake.

  • @arienh4. Yeah, THAT's the problem here. Learn a bit of economics, look at the past development and see how good spotify and iTunes have been to all the "underground/unknown" bands. Flattr is just another way of members from former piratebay to earn even more money on something they all stated should be free. If you fall for this humbug you are just filling the pockets of the worst art enemies in the world. So, I have a tip for you, get the point?

  • @flashchrome You're still completely missing the point of Flattr. If you want to get the content for free you can get the content for free. If you want to give a little back you can give a little back.

  • @arienh4. OR, you purchase the merchandise the normal way. As stated previously, learn a bit of economics and you will understand how useless this flattr thing is/will be. Everything that is commercial have a cost connected to it, regardles of how little or much you "give back" there is allways someone on the other end making money. Or do you sincerely believe the guys behind flattr are doing this for free?

  • @flashchrome Of course they aren't. The point is, you're somehow thinking this is a payment system. It isn't. It's a donation system. There's a big difference.

This is just a way to give a small donation back to something you would have otherwise not given anything for.

  • @arienh4. I know this is a payment system. And I'm not stating you are paying the artists when you click donate, you actually pay FLATTR. This system is pointless unless the artists would be prioritized and they are not. You could either donate a couple of cents and make FLATTR rich or you could purchase the album/song/print directly from the artists social networking site (facebook, youtube, myspace, twitter or what have you) without the middleman FLATTR. See what I mean?

  • @flashchrome Yes, I see what you mean. I see you still have no idea what this is. Flattr isn't a middleman. It would be, if you'd be getting something in return for your click. You don't. This isn't for artist who sell albums. This is for artists who put songs on the internet for anyone to download for free. Therefore, you can't "purchase the album/song/print directly from the artists social networking site (facebook, youtube, myspace, twitter or what have you)".

  • @arienh4. Well, maby we are talking about different things here. To me an artist is a person who makes a living doing art. To be able to make a living you need to make money from your art. So, instead of sending the contibution directly to the artist it should go through flattr? And how about copyrights, distribution rights, taxes such as vat and other charges (economics again). If you want to contribute to someone you do not need flattr unless it is free to use for all.

  • @flashchrome That last sentence is what's most important: "If you want to contribute to someone you do not need flattr unless it is free to use for all.". Exactly. This is meant to contribute to an artist (someone doing art, regardless of whether they're paid, in this case) providing his art free to use for all. You can use Flattr to give a small amount back easily. It's not meant at all for those who already make a living with their content. VAT needn't apply in this case by the way.

  • The cake is a lie!!!!

  • Kinda cool ill check it out

  • Nice Video! The Name from the Music pleas, she is so cool !?

  • I'm using the beta. Last month, I got like €0.30. Financially, that's really no different from getting nothing at all. But I was really happy -- it meant someone was actually willing to give me something for the thing I created. Even if it was still not very much, it felt great. Flattr makes me happy. :)

  • So, where do I get an invite? :-)

  • @bpwned Go to the website, sign up and then wait for invitation. :)

  • fuck ya!

if i got a birthday cake, i eat it al at myself ;D

  • This actually is ingenious. Just the thing the industry needs, it could solve all of the entertainment industry's problems. Or atleast have the potential too. Only thing that's left is, are the people willing to give ANYTHING? I sure know I would, but it could be that the basic human greed is what's wrong with all business models ever tried.

  • @MrKennyBones If this gets rolling, I would certainly become a member. The idea is awesome, and even someone like me with a really limited budget would gladly pay a small sum each month to be able to give "cake" like this to those things I like when I like them. Awesome.

  • Why did you make a new version? The other one looked better. Its too soft now. Blegh! Btw can someone send me an invite code please :'(

  • This is just awsome!
