So the Russians tail the airliner for 2 1/2 hours obviously trying to make contact with it, to where no response is assumed. Gotta protect the motherland.
@HongeKP russians did perfect...what they have to do...it was americans order..what the fucki airplane croos russian border for 500 km? we will fuck anybody who try croos our borders
@Freestyleartclub You Russians have real temper problems. It was just a PASSENGER PLANE. Do you have ANY idea of what terrible pain you caused to those families?
@kaycorey1 do you knoe how that passenger airplane was in russian terytory?american did it because they were hopping russian will not shot i down they could get information ... everything what hapenning american does.. every pain for different country comes from usa..because they are killer..and we still do not have any prove that it was passenger there..yes it was passenger plan but inside was cia machine
Only a tiny amount of wreckage was found. Not one identifiable body was found. The US had 100% radar coverqge of that area, so they knew exactly where it was at all times. To claim that plain voice radio intercepts that took 20 hours to interpret is not plausible. Search kalinfo conjecture, to get a fuller examination of this propaganda victory
So really, You have to consider all options, but think about it; The plane was 300 miles of course, either the pilot was extremely in-experienced, or it was intentional and there is a previous history of counties using civilian planes as an excuse to spy on another country, some of these countries are just pathetic with the extent they will go to; to receive rival info, I really can't say that it was either country's fault all I can say is that in my opinion, soviets had every reason to act.
@MrSmallport It'll be a different story if you were on the airplane. And how can you blatantly accuse South Korea of using a passenger airliner to spy? Do you have any proof other than a historical fact which could prove irrelevant to another country? Or any other proofs that aren't just mere suspicion or qualms of the mind? I feel sorry for the Soviets for they were stuck between a hard space, but this could have ended better. Neither side was at fault nor were the Soviets justified at all.
Don't be so sure you all know what happened, you have to take into consideration the fact that, if the soviet pilot was ordered to shoot down KAL 007 then what would of happened to him if he disobeyed? In places such as Russia the law doesn't exactly have sympathy for one's personal feelings, the pilot had no choice it was Do or Die, if the soviet did not order the shooting, they may of been relieved of duty. And according to my research there was about 1 dozen bodies recovered, not nearly 269.
One don't have to look an answer! That flight number 007 already gave all the answer. 007 exist only in the movies, but in real life, this is what we got. CIA willing to trade that many souls just for the testing of Soviet air defense or reaction. Feel sorry for those souls for booking the wrong flight.
@CCCPSovietSoldier Oh Goody, it's the retarded racist mongoloid russian... Funny, a russian nazi, the very group your country fought to the inch of death for. Retard... Too bad Hitler didn't wipe you mongoloids out.
Funny, the mongoloids claim warnings were transmitted, but shockingly, they have no recording of a single warning, yet have the entire process of murdering an innocent plane on tape.
Body parts were returned to S. Korea by the USSR "recovery" team, dumbass. F-ck mongo-russians
@CCCPSovietSoldier Not at all mongoloid. You are far too ignorant to be able to get under my skin. As for my being jewish, wrong again mongoloid retard. I've been to Poland, retard, which tells me you have never seen anything outside of your own country. Go back to jerking off to shirtless photos of your newest version of Stalin that will soon be dictating your every move, again.... enjoy, mongoloid...
@peterm3964 Your evidence is where? The USSR recovered the wreakage if spy cameras were there they would have showed them to everyone. Any other defense of the USSR?
@kosiak10851 No mistakes or accidents or your dead? Since the Soviets won't or could not recover the plane we don't know why is was off course. Soviet airliners went off course a lot and flew over areas they should not have in the US and we didn't shoot any down.
Interesting you all call this an accident, a US Congressman that spoke out against the NWO illuminati was one of the Passengers that was killed on that flight
Forced it out with all spying photographs? They were there because CIA put them there, 300 Miles inside Soviet Territory, Koreans were used to spy on behalf of America.
this report is not complete>> no word about the spy-flights by USAF over Kamschatka & Sakhalyn before the incident, no word about the american RC135-plane present in the area that night ..under those "cold war"-circumstances + violating soviet-airspace, the korean boeing was doomed! RIP
soviets are stupid.they shouldnt have shot it down right away.should have flown up close to it and escort it out,and shoot it down if it displayed wierd behaivor.
@bob75ify they tried to escort, but nothing happend. the aircraft flew over the military area turned then back. they fired light rockets/bullets as a warning. then shot them down.
actually if you read what happened...they first shot warning shots...no response. they guy actually did fly beside the airliner and still no response... THEN the airliner was told by Korean airport hq to raise its altitude...this sealed their fate because the soviet pilot thought it was trying to get away...do some research first PLEASE
@dualOne01 Are you a pilot? The Soviets said they fired warning shots after 2 days of denying they knew about it. You make your vaild points look bad by having so many facts wrong. The 747 stands out, more so then. so it is hard to say we thought it was a recon plane.
Trustandreliability Are you a former Soviet? Soviet Paranoia reigned supreme during the Cold War. This is a by product of a"Closed Society". There were several ways to force down the plane without shooting it down. With satellite technology even back in 83 there wasn't any reason to overfly using a Commercial Aircraft. Soviet aircraft routinely "probed" Alaskan Air Defense by entering U.S. Airspace to see how we scrambled aircraft. We never shot them down, we just escorted them out of US Arspce
@Weerzer You are totally full of shit. NO one was like "okay". For one thing, the US shot down the Iranian airliner FIVE years AFTER the Russians shot down KAL 007, not before, you idiot. Another thing, the Russians tailed and IDENTIFIED the distinctive shaped airliner for 2 and 1/2 hours. The Americans reacted in minutes with a SAM. Both were horrible, I feel for all the victims and their families, but you are doing exactly that which you are commenting. Absolut Scheiße.
@deutschschoen You are 100% right. I remember where I was and watching it unfold on TV. I really thought WW3 was going to start. Regan gave in and the world did little to punish the Soviets. Without the US grain we were selling them they would have had rationing or starvation. But the US put farmers interest over what was right. The Soviets should have been embargoed by everyone. But we just sold them the rope to hang us.
@deutschschoen You forget to mention it was not the first encounter between KAL and Red Air Forces. In late 70s they also force landed a Paris-Seoul B-707 'mistakenly' flown into Soviet airspace from the north just in time of their new radar system tests. They 've cut tonns of ELINT gear from that plane. As for a 1983 shotdown there was a huge USN drills a week before with numerous Soviet airspace violations. Their commander was fired a day of two before for 'failure to act manly' on that.
even though their instruments showed them to be off course (the HSI needle) and the fact that they were out of communication range and had to relay comms through another aircraft they just kept going like fools and actually reporting that they were still on course. Basically, the stupidity of the flight crew cost all those people their lives, the Russians were right in doing what they did, especially at such a delicate time (the cold war tensions).
@xitup1 Technology was not nearly what it is now fornavigation. For 007 to fly the correct route the plane had to sit still for a certain period of time and a string of numbers entered. Move the plane a minute early or mistype a number and the plane could be 300 miles off course but show the pilots they were on course since the plane was where it was told to go. Radio communication was bad on overseas flights on 9-11 so go back to 1983 and imagine what it could be.
animals to not have the sense of terror, tat can not conceive of death.
I love animals more than anyone, and could never even watch natural predation. I still can't, but the truth is that only humans can conceive of future, terror etc. Terror of threat can cause shock even in humans. Most animal behaviors are instinct.
I never harm any animal, but comparing them to humans is literally insane.
@chris2002Rocklin i agree with you. i had myself some anymals. i am thinking exactly as you despite perhaps one thing. i think i would have the power to kill a human if i needed to but not the animal.
If you take the time to research the case then any questions you have will be answered.
To start talking about CIA conspiracies is way off the mark. You know not everything is a big conspiracy, sometimes circumstance, accidents and mistakes are to blame and that was certainly the case here.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
How the hell would the KAL be off course for so long with no redirection from ground control. Im not pro Soviet nor pro Korean. But I can tell you this. The CIA is a very dirty organization and they will use any dirty tricks to play the politics.
This is exactly what I was thinking. Goes to show you that either the news doesn't report the facts or they simply make their own. Besides, how would CNN know this in such a short time span. That garbled HF audio sample didn't say that. *rolleyes* What idiots!
Korean pilots with command from USA created a provocation, and used civilians as weapon of their games. Shame on them
Look, that is Sakhalin, a lot of military objects there, plus massive exersises of soviet Pacific Ocean fleet. And plane moving inside soviet terrotiry ignoring all warnings. That's not a surprise that they got shoot down.
God, the idiocy on youtube is gobsmacking. Theres a conspiracy theory for everything isnt there? It cant be as simple as a commercial passenger jet straying off course? "NO IT HAS TO BE THE AMERIKKKANS AND THEIR ALLIES!"
@dualOne01 Hah, pretty typical response to anyone questioning conspiracy theorists. And what research did you do? Watch this youtube video? I cant even remember commenting on this video, but now that i re-watch it, the conspiracy theories seem as absurd as ever. Give me proof beyond a shadow of a doubt and I might believe you.
because if you watch other videos made about this with interviews from experts on both sides and an interview with the pilot you will see...also what about the Americans shooting down the Iranian civilian airliner in 1988???they shot it down with a SAM FROM THEIR BATTLESHIP! and they said that they mistook it for a Grumman F-14 Tomcat ATTACK PLANE!!! there is a BIG difference between the two!!!not only in radar signature but in SIZE!!!
@dualOne01 The Iranian plane was in a war zone and refused radio contact. American ships had minutes the Soviets had hours and 007 WAS NOT IN A WAR ZONE!
And the worst part of it all is that they didn't even apologize, and went so far as to saying that they weren't responsible for the deaths of 290 INNOCENT HUMAN LIVES!!!
and your denial to the truth is the typical response from an ignorant person who will take ANYTHING the GOVERNMENT throw at them...AND NEVER QUESTION IT NO MATTER HOW STUPID IT IS...
one more thing...you'd think that as fast as the Americans reacted to destroy a plane WELL AWAY FROM THEIR HOMELAND, that they would do the same to prevent 9/11 happening with the same tactic...
yes, the soviets did a terrible thing to shoot down an unarmed airliner, but stop bitching about it
grow up kids. We already concluded everything about KAL007. stop coming up with useless arguments. and also some (keyword SOME, not all) of you korean youtubers commenting on this video are being extremely immature. I am korean myself, but i don't type so much shit on this video ( for example:"FUCK THE SOVIETS")
get off of your computer and go to school kids. YouTube isn't for you
those annoying clown russians could have tried to contact the plane, but they love to kill....so they did what they are used to doing.....killing all those poor people.....any idiot can see a 747 and know its a civilian aircraft...but the annoying russian general didnt care
You have to understand the mindset of the Soviet military back then. I dont think it was so much as the Russian general who OK'd the shooting down of KAL 007 didn't care, but from what I can gather he was afraid of being relieved of command if he did nothing. There were similar events prior to this (all non fatal) where the Soviet commaders in charge did nothing to intruding aircraft and were relieved.
As tragic as this was, this is a classic case of damned if you do damned if you dont!
It was the Cold War! The plane violated soviet airspace twice by going off-course. It had no communication with the soviet ground. Arctic gales had destroyed the soviet lines of communication. As far as they were concerned, the aircraft was a civilian Boeing with military tech on it that was to harm the USSR. So they shot it down.
the MiG pilot told the ground: "Its a civilian 747!" He tried his best to tell his commander it was a normal harmless civilian jet, but the general refused to believe him. So he tried to shoot it in the least damaging way, but that turned out the worst way possible.
The KAL pilots did not respond to Soviet ATC. Had they talked, then they would had known they were 300 miles off the planed route! Had the pilots responded, they would had been guided out, not destroyed as a Unknown risk.
Actually the pilot never told them it was even a Boeing. For all the ground control knew it was a large aircraft. After tailing them for awhile, the airplane made a climb, slowing them down. The MiG pilots over shot the airliner and made them pissed off. When coming back around, one of them locked on and shot two missiles. The end.
I was in L.A. when this happened. In fact, for the first two weeks that I was there, it was practically on the news there every night. Even some of the stores in L.A. wouldn't sell Russian vodka.
There were no other solutions , but to shot that spy "liner" out of the sky, that flight wasnt first american provoacatioan, many had been recorded airlier
@leadman1979 I believe that you will not do that if there is danger to your life. The plane might be an enemy aircraft. Its just sad that the technology was not enough to prevent such disaster
Soviets caught the US flying in to the ussr and spying on them before, Why would they want that to happen again? They tried to make contact but no success. We must understand this was the Cold War here... If the Russians knew that it was a commercial flight, they might not have done that.
safty first... that could of been a spy plane scoutin for soviet high value targets.... thats why pilots spost 2 check where they flyin and not fly in restricted airspace
ew shut up. paranoid poor fuckers. cant even read the big ass sign that says "KOREA AIRLINES" thats how fucken uneducated you are. How paranoid. Korean airlines didnt test your "nerves and compy(wtf!?) go kill yourself poor useless loser.
Too things seem strange in this sad story a) a so great route error in 1983, for which explainations are not too convincing. b) the great interest in achieving informations about soviet facilities in Kamchackta (island overflied by that aircraft) There are lot of things we had even to know about that disgrace
The real truth was that there was a US spy plane high above them and was using at as a cover to capture the military installations on the island. The US sacrificed over 250 people for their little military intelligence. Once the Su-15s were in the air and shot the commercial plane down. The US spy plane shit itself and hurried back home. This incident was a total epic fail for the US, just proving that CCCP was the leading power. US killed those people not the Soviets.
Hahaha you are fucking retarded. You have been brainwashed by US propaganda. The plane was flying over military installations, good thing the Su 15s shot it down or it could have been a serious problem if the US found out an advantage over USSR and had themselves a little fun with the nukes. BTW if you think US is so great and i am an idiot consider this. The US financed the Taliban to fight the Soviets. The whole reason anyone has died from the new war is US fault and now theyarecoveringthemess
i agree 100% with what you're saying about US brainwashing and the US funding the taliban, but Larry McDonald, who had spoken out against the current reagan administration and plans for world government was on board that plane, and he was probably the biggest threat to the US government at that time. don't you think it's suspicious that the plane was shot down with him on it?
no you're the idiot, what xxninjaxxx5 is saying is extremely close to the truth give or take wether it was a spy plane above the jumbo or there was spy equipment within the jumbo...nonetheless it deliberately flew over airspace it should not have been flying over.
Can you rephrase that, asaluste007, the US plane didn't set the Korean airplane off course. It was already predetermined by the US that it should fly over Kamchatka. US didn't think that CCCP would shoot down a passenger plane with over 200+ people on board, but the Soviets where too hardcore for them and ended up raeping them.
I think that is quite impossible that a modern airplane piloted by expert crew fails route 200 miles about, in 1983, with radars, inertial systems, computers, and geography knowledge. Is it proven the route mistake to be accidental? And why was used "007" (typical spy-numver) to address the plane?
If anyone knows their history well, the USA & USSR were both just as bad! The USSR carried out imperialism in Central Asia, America throughout Africa & Latin America! The USA has a shocking history of raping the Philippines in 1898! Then Nicaragua, El Salvador, Grenada, Chile, Greece, East Timor, Cyprus, Vietnam, Laos & Angola throughout the 20th Century! Take your pick where theyve been! Even Fiji! Theyve got enormous blood on their hands themselves! The USA are the ultimate hypocrites!
SURE THIS IS A TRAGEDY! BUT, the USA is the ultimate hypocrite here! No one, no one in their right mind would buy their bullshit! I bet it was a spy plane! No one would believe the hysteria displayed by both Reagan & Kirkpatrick about this incident, that 269 people were killed, when they with the Contras murdered 50,000 people in Nicaragua in 1983/84, 40,000 in El Salvador in 1985 & another 60,000 in Panama in 1989! Its just pure ideological fanaticism against the USSR by a very aggressive USA!
just incompetence. Five years before the soviets shot down a 707 which had strayed into their territory , same company same useless navigation. Just one casualty that time. That one had ignored calls to land but this time they were guarding an illegal nuclear test and there is no record of an attempt to contact the koreans. By the way, they all spoke english, even soviet pilots spoke russian so they could have talked. Also they got the black boxes, but they didn't return them until the nineties
Strayed 300 miles off course? No one can believe that American lie. US used that civilian plane to spy on Russia, sacrificing hundreds of lives is not unusual with American CIA.
Don't buy this lovely story. That passenger jet was a spy plane. South Koreans didn't care about their people. They would have a few spies among the passengers with trained pilots and they would pretend that they are lost. They thought USSR would never shot down a civil plane with load of people... Well, they got it right in their faces...
VERY unfortunate- but i do not think you can blame the russians for this- they did what any other nation would...a korean commercial airline pilot has no right to fly over russian military base- and if he didnt know- there had to be atleast some visual ques that the fighters gave to the airline so it changes the course...russians arnt savages that mindlessly want to blow shit up- i dont think anyone wants to shoot down a defenseless plane with 300 people on board..
just as i thought, When some foreign plane get shot down by a plane other then america you morons some how still try to blame it on America once again. Russia took full blame for the plane being shot down. Families and the Airlines confirm it was a COMMERCIAL AIRLINER carrying CIVILIANS must i write these words in crayon for you to understand?
I watched the documentary of Russian pilots that were intercepting the jet. They said they were signaling for hours telling the pilots to land the jet. They pilots ignored them. Later the pilot was questioned and he admitted that they simply ignored the international signals. So blame it on the pilots.
I`m not sure if i miss read your comment or you miss read my comment but what i am saying is that some morons in America are saying this plane was a U.S Military plane that was shot down by Russian Pilots.
This kind of accidents happen, its part of the paranoia of Cold War era; dont be so naive to think the US never made this kinda mistake, anyone remember the Iranian A300 Airbus shot down by US in 1988 ?
Remember CIA, KGB same side. Thousands killed by elite (America, Israel) in 2001 what is a few hundered people when you want to get rid of a congressman trying to expose the Federal Reserve Bank con (private company, elite share holders, utter bastards)
It wasn't a nice thing, true. But those pilots were under the deliberate orders of the CIA to infiltrate Soviet airspace, and not by coincidence the plane had Soviet military bases directly in its line. The pilots ignored all attempts by the Soviets to make contact with it, who were forced to take the appropriate action.
LOOLOOOLLOOLLOOLOL Russia did the right thing. Didnt change the course? Fuck you! Heres our military base. Wont change your way? You know the rules. Every country, would do the same thing. Especcially Bush XD stupid Japanese idiots XD
... The fuck are you talking about? IT WAS A KOREAN AIRLINER. KOREAN. IT EVEN SAYS IT IN THE TITLE. Oh, the irony is sweet here. "STUPID Japanese IDIOTS".
I live in Canada and my favourite Country is Russia! :) Man I wish I could live there :) Whats it like there BrotherKomissar? I believe that Russia's history is very rich compared to other nations. Most people in the West think Russia is bad/evil, but I don't believe that at all! Thats what the government wants us to believe, and the fact that the Cold War ended only less than 20 years ago doesn't help :( I hate it so much! If people knew more history they would know why Russia does what it does
& what it needs to do to survive! Like with this stupid war with Georgia! The stupid U.N. had to get involved! I really hope you guys show them who their messing with! Nobody sticks it to The Motherland!
Quick Silver Stalin if you ever get the chance to travel to Russia don't hesitate, its a fantastic experience. I lived on Sakhalin Island for 2 years and don't regret a minute of it. Russian people are fantastic and I'd go back in a heartbeat.
soviets were drunk and under influences of amphetamine from east german laboratory and didnt recognized what is the plane what is bottle of stolichnaya smiert sovietkskim banditen
oh shut up, you - cowboy-hated idiot. Go eat haburgers and play banjo. Or may be you will sing rap with afroamericans in Harlem? :o))))) American pilots did not recognized that they fly over Pacific, not Oklahoma, becouse they got plenty of booze.
Plus why is it if a burglar breaks into your house we are perfectly fine to shoot the mofo with no questions asked? But it is perfectly fine flying over your biggest enemys territory during the Cold War over the most important military installations in the Far East (the submarine base at Petropavlovsk and air bases around the area)? You are a naive idiot. Go join the Peace Corp or something, they need people like somewhere in Africa..
SCE2AUX You call it a murder? Have you ever been in a professional military man? Let see what do you think the NORAD would do if unidentifiable hostile plane flying at night would try to fly over the White House and Pentagon right after 9/11? What choices do you think the NORAD people would have? If you read the news all networks are full of images of USAF bombing civilian wedding parties in Afghanistan or Iraq killing newlyweds and their guests in a DAYLIGHT? How many times that happened?
"Have you ever been in a professional military man?"
Yes, I have.
1. KAL was not unidentifiable. Nor was it hostile. Nor was it flying over the Kremlin.
2. What happens in war are accidents, this was intentional and deliberate.
3. The Soviets have a history of deliberatly enticing foreign aircraft over their soil, using aviation beacons with the same frequency and a stonger signal to fool pilots into entering Soviet airspace. Lake Van was the most notable example.
It is also well documented and verified by many undercover agents. That the Soviet leadership was paranoid at the time. Countries were constantly violating Soviet airspace to test were their defences were. And their was alot over Kamchata peninsula.
flankerpraha: It has been well documented by many sources. One of the Russian pilots even admitted in interviews that he saw several rows of passenger windows "military planes don't have such windows, I wondered what kind of plane it was but I had my orders" direct quate from the Russian pilot.
This was a tragedy of a U.S war provocation against the USSR. The CIA intentionally with their South Korean hotshot pilots put those people in danger and were responsible for their deaths. The plane was well into Soviet airspace flying over a line of naval bases, failed repeatedly to answer the orders from the Soviet jets even after warning shots with tracers were used. Marshal Nikolai Ogarkhov confirmed the plane was being shadowed by a U.S RC-135 spy plane. U.S response: "LIES".
Generally the flight crew of a passenger aircraft is not likely to look out a window for tracer fire, especially since (A.) Sukhoi Su-15 fighters were not ARMED with tracer bullets and (B) understanding that, with the notable exception of North Korea, all the nations that they were flying by are considered rational and civilized nations they wouldn't have any concern about being shot down. Obviously they gave the Russians much more credit than they were due.
Generally a normal flight crew would've responded to repeated attempts made to contact it since A: straying off course is a serious matter, B: No aircraft would dare fly had its radio and communications have been out of order C: The pilots would've glanced out the window to see signal lights in morse codes. How civilized when you're using 200 plus civilians in a CIA operation to provoke WWIII. Gennady Osipovich stated he used tracer bullets.
Soviet fighters didn't carry radios equiped to talk to commercial aircraft, unlike western aircraft. so the fighter wouldn,t get a response. in the audio of the russian pilot you can hear him say the the ANO lights are on (aka flood lights on tail illuminating the airline logo).
I don't think so. And what evidence do you have? The plane never reported it was in any danger. Even if your claim that Soviet aircraft didn't have the proper radio (which I think is a load of bull) were true, it doesn't explain why it pilots ignored the other signals, AND the warning shots.
"Even if your claim that Soviet aircraft didn't have the proper radio (which I think is a load of bull"
What is a proven fact is that the Soviets in the past have attempted to entice Western aircraft into Soviet airspace by putting NDB beacons with the same AM frequency but a stronger signal in Soviet airspace. Read the book "North Star Over my Shoulder."
The Russians knew damb well it was a passenger jet. I can't understand why they thought it was so necessary to shoot it down. The russian leadership was paranoid and trigger happy.
Soviets murdered innocent Koreans.

And according to my research there was about 1 dozen bodies recovered, not nearly 269.

actually if you read what happened...they first shot warning shots...no response. they guy actually did fly beside the airliner and still no response... THEN the airliner was told by Korean airport hq to raise its altitude...this sealed their fate because the soviet pilot thought it was trying to get away...do some research first PLEASE
dualOne01 1 year ago
@dualOne01 Are you a pilot? The Soviets said they fired warning shots after 2 days of denying they knew about it. You make your vaild points look bad by having so many facts wrong. The 747 stands out, more so then. so it is hard to say we thought it was a recon plane.
fwellman 1 year ago
Trustandreliability Are you a former Soviet? Soviet Paranoia reigned supreme during the Cold War. This is a by product of a"Closed Society". There were several ways to force down the plane without shooting it down. With satellite technology even back in 83 there wasn't any reason to overfly using a Commercial Aircraft. Soviet aircraft routinely "probed" Alaskan Air Defense by entering U.S. Airspace to see how we scrambled aircraft. We never shot them down, we just escorted them out of US Arspce

Weerzer 1 year ago 2
@Weerzer You are totally full of shit. NO one was like "okay". For one thing, the US shot down the Iranian airliner FIVE years AFTER the Russians shot down KAL 007, not before, you idiot. Another thing, the Russians tailed and IDENTIFIED the distinctive shaped airliner for 2 and 1/2 hours. The Americans reacted in minutes with a SAM. Both were horrible, I feel for all the victims and their families, but you are doing exactly that which you are commenting. Absolut Scheiße.
deutschschoen 1 year ago 30
@deutschschoen You are 100% right. I remember where I was and watching it unfold on TV. I really thought WW3 was going to start. Regan gave in and the world did little to punish the Soviets. Without the US grain we were selling them they would have had rationing or starvation. But the US put farmers interest over what was right. The Soviets should have been embargoed by everyone. But we just sold them the rope to hang us.
fwellman 1 year ago
@deutschschoen You forget to mention it was not the first encounter between KAL and Red Air Forces. In late 70s they also force landed a Paris-Seoul B-707 'mistakenly' flown into Soviet airspace from the north just in time of their new radar system tests. They 've cut tonns of ELINT gear from that plane. As for a 1983 shotdown there was a huge USN drills a week before with numerous Soviet airspace violations. Their commander was fired a day of two before for 'failure to act manly' on that.
zipacna1980 1 year ago
even though their instruments showed them to be off course (the HSI needle) and the fact that they were out of communication range and had to relay comms through another aircraft they just kept going like fools and actually reporting that they were still on course. Basically, the stupidity of the flight crew cost all those people their lives, the Russians were right in doing what they did, especially at such a delicate time (the cold war tensions).
xitup1 1 year ago
@xitup1 Technology was not nearly what it is now fornavigation. For 007 to fly the correct route the plane had to sit still for a certain period of time and a string of numbers entered. Move the plane a minute early or mistype a number and the plane could be 300 miles off course but show the pilots they were on course since the plane was where it was told to go. Radio communication was bad on overseas flights on 9-11 so go back to 1983 and imagine what it could be.

I love animals more than anyone, and could never even watch natural predation. I still can't, but the truth is that only humans can conceive of future, terror etc. Terror of threat can cause shock even in humans. Most animal behaviors are instinct.

because if you watch other videos made about this with interviews from experts on both sides and an interview with the pilot you will see...also what about the Americans shooting down the Iranian civilian airliner in 1988???they shot it down with a SAM FROM THEIR BATTLESHIP! and they said that they mistook it for a Grumman F-14 Tomcat ATTACK PLANE!!! there is a BIG difference between the two!!!not only in radar signature but in SIZE!!!

stonebrownalien 2 years ago 3
You have to understand the mindset of the Soviet military back then. I dont think it was so much as the Russian general who OK'd the shooting down of KAL 007 didn't care, but from what I can gather he was afraid of being relieved of command if he did nothing. There were similar events prior to this (all non fatal) where the Soviet commaders in charge did nothing to intruding aircraft and were relieved.
As tragic as this was, this is a classic case of damned if you do damned if you dont!
ryanspeed 2 years ago 11
It was the Cold War! The plane violated soviet airspace twice by going off-course. It had no communication with the soviet ground. Arctic gales had destroyed the soviet lines of communication. As far as they were concerned, the aircraft was a civilian Boeing with military tech on it that was to harm the USSR. So they shot it down.
galacticempire19bby 2 years ago
And that makes it somehow acceptable?
adorm 2 years ago
@adorm
Yes
If a flight from the USSR violated USA airspace, then didn't respond to 2hours of being hailed on the radio. America would have shot it down.
As would any country that was at war and believed it could be a threat.
Trustisaliability 1 year ago
@adorm
Also the USA had been flying spy planes disguised as passenger plans over the USSR for years.
When the indecent occurred the USA had increased the number of these flights, and the USSR honestly believed that a nuclear strike was imminent.

dharmashooter 2 years ago 3
the MiG pilot told the ground: "Its a civilian 747!" He tried his best to tell his commander it was a normal harmless civilian jet, but the general refused to believe him. So he tried to shoot it in the least damaging way, but that turned out the worst way possible.
The KAL pilots did not respond to Soviet ATC. Had they talked, then they would had known they were 300 miles off the planed route! Had the pilots responded, they would had been guided out, not destroyed as a Unknown risk.
drivojulianrobotnik 2 years ago 3
Actually the pilot never told them it was even a Boeing. For all the ground control knew it was a large aircraft. After tailing them for awhile, the airplane made a climb, slowing them down. The MiG pilots over shot the airliner and made them pissed off. When coming back around, one of them locked on and shot two missiles. The end.

Too things seem strange in this sad story a) a so great route error in 1983, for which explainations are not too convincing. b) the great interest in achieving informations about soviet facilities in Kamchackta (island overflied by that aircraft) There are lot of things we had even to know about that disgrace
anisocoro 2 years ago 3
The real truth was that there was a US spy plane high above them and was using at as a cover to capture the military installations on the island. The US sacrificed over 250 people for their little military intelligence. Once the Su-15s were in the air and shot the commercial plane down. The US spy plane shit itself and hurried back home. This incident was a total epic fail for the US, just proving that CCCP was the leading power. US killed those people not the Soviets.

Bjarku 2 years ago 2
no you're the idiot, what xxninjaxxx5 is saying is extremely close to the truth give or take wether it was a spy plane above the jumbo or there was spy equipment within the jumbo...nonetheless it deliberately flew over airspace it should not have been flying over.

And how did the US military plane manage to set the Korean airplane off course?
asaluste007 2 years ago

Yes, I have.
1. KAL was not unidentifiable. Nor was it hostile. Nor was it flying over the Kremlin.
2. What happens in war are accidents, this was intentional and deliberate.
3. The Soviets have a history of deliberatly enticing foreign aircraft over their soil, using aviation beacons with the same frequency and a stonger signal to fool pilots into entering Soviet airspace. Lake Van was the most notable example.

3. That is the load of bullshit I've heard since Nancy Reagan's "Just Say No" slogan.

"1. All cats are grey in the dark. Would you be able to tell a civilian plane from the RC-135 spy plane in the area?"
Considering that we are talking about a Boeing 747 which cannot be mistaken for any other plane, and that had the tail illuminated, no way in hell.
"2. Quite Right. It was a CIA operation cooked up by Reagan to increase his anti-Soviet war drive."
You communist apologists have had 25 years to prove that assertion and you have offered nothing substantial.
