Great humor!! Loved watching this piece as one would never know the humor of the legend and the great personality he had. Very straightforward and honest!
@LoveThroughSong His English is not as good as that of Domingo or Carreras, so it can be a little harder to understand him. The story goes like this: In the opera Tosca, the character Cavaradossi is supposed to be sitting in a chair while stroking Tosca's hand. Pavarotti was worried that, because of his weight, he would break the chair. Even if the iron held HIS weight, it couldn't hold him AND the lady who was playing Tosca, so it ended up breaking anyway.
Anyone who hasn't read "Pavarotti: My World": you need to read it. I did, and some of the stories in it were so funny I was laughing so hard that tears almost came to my eyes. One of my favorite stories besides the ones he's telling in this video is when he found a snake in his bungalow in Singapore.
I'm curious on what particular part of the opera was he talking about, regarding the chair and what might they be singing on that part? I'm not really familiar with operas but I'm really interested in them.
I did not know he is a funny guy. When he is singing, he gives a very intimidating aura. I like that behind this successful artist is a humble man full of warmth and humor. May you rest in peace, sir!
The first one was the best. The last thing you want to do is stand in the dressing room in your underwear at the last minute before an opera performance. xD
Like all of his fans, I cried as soon as I found out that Pavarotti died. :( (It didn't come as a shock, but it was still heartbreaking.) But now, I watch these clips, and instead of crying, I'm laughing! Funny memories are the best! :) Tears of laughter are as cleansing as tears of grief. There are SO MANY funny memories of Pavarotti I can think of.
He was very warm, close to his audience ! Sometime i miss him and i just wanna cry-for the great Maestro ! Only 2 tenors that remained such huge emotion to me like that - Maestro Franco Corelli and the late great Luciano Pavarotti !
@yupiie He said he always had a dream that he wasn't dressed and he heard the music just before his aria start. Recently, however, he heard this music while he was still dressing and it wasn't a dream! The stage director came in his dressing room and said, "Mr. Pavarotti, you're on" - not a dream! Pav had thought the performance started at 8:00 but it really started at 7:30 and no one had told him! :D
@loveluciano1 Oh yes! I love the way he appears to take it all in his stride... obviously he simply did not care! The audience love him so much! So very much :).
This is just hilarious and precious. We get a glimps of the real Pavarotti, the charmer. Who can help but love him.
I don't think he was embarrassed about his weight at all. He loved to eat and he let the world know it. He was straightforward and honest. Restaurants would put his favorite dishes on their menus calling it Pavarotti whatever, and signs up saying that he ate there. He was good for business. He is absoltely wonderful!! Fat and all :-)
Luciano was wonderful man, with great sense of humour, kind and very charming. he know how to speak with people and how to make them to love him. I love him so much.
I never thought he took his weight easily at all. I always get the impression he was excruciatingly embarrassed by it and aware that everyone around him was aware of it.
I think he joked about it because he was so self-concious about it.
On the other hand I suspect this is one of the things that made him so likeable: voice like a god, but the rest of him was just as human as any of us.
Well, I meant... in public he never took it hard or serious if someone joked about his "parameters". And he genially got out of any provocative situations publicly. I adore this man.
I know what you mean- it must be extremely difficult to always be gracious about it, when you particular weakness is always on display, for the world to see and comment on. Most failings can be kept private most of the time, and most addictions elicit alot of sympathy, but not over-eating.
sorry i voted you down wrongly and i want to say i agree with you i think too that Luciano Pavarotti don't like to much his large size he make a diets all his life gained weight and than loosed weight, but he knew how to joke with this instead to be hurt because that. and this was his advantage. i love him so much.
I never saw the end of it, about how the greatest compliment he ever received is how the man in the street runs into him and says he didn't see him... LOL!!!!!
Great! :-D I love it, thanks. I saw part of this in a Pavarotti documentary a while back too and I'm delighted to see the rest of it. What a great guy :-D
You know, I'm surprised how good his comic timing is even in English which he never had complete command of... like the pause before he said, ".....they are still looking for the chair-" perfect. :-D

@John081590 Well, the answer on that starts on 1:39. The opera is Tosca and the particular scene is from room of Scarpia - The Torture Scene.
