  • such a wonderful voice coming out of that little body !!!!!

  • Great job! Many thanks to MARK GRAY for writing such a beautiful song.

  • WOW That was great....Clay is an awesome singer.....Love it!!

  • Omg, this was so beautiful I struggled not to cry, and I don't generally cry at songs. Wow, it's obvious Clay was born to sing, love him, I'd take his second hand heart... :) Thanks for this video.

  • He looks young for his age, but that voice...born to sing.

  • Clay I would take your 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th hand heart....I just love him on this song.

  • CLAY HAS ALWAYS BEEN CLAY AND HE IS WONDERFUL , TRUE AND TRUE.. GOD BLESS.....

  • I love deep-voiced Clay. And hope he'll show it off more when he goes on tour. SOOOOOOON!

  • Would love also for him to record Amazing Grace..If he did that I would just cry like a baby..When he sang Everything I Do I Do For You I cried cuz it was a song that described my mom and was on the air when I found out she has passed away..Amazing Grace was her favorite song and I cry when I hear but I know for sure I would bawl if Clay sang it.

  • Love his lower register but then again love everything about him..Thanks for this.

  • As good as this is, it's NOTHING compared to his performance at Pieces of Gold when he was a senior in high school. If I can figure out how to get this performance, which I have on VHS, on here, it will blow you away.

  • You may want to try to play it on your tv then if you camera has a video options record it there and then upload to youtube.Just a suggestion.Would love to see it.

  • WOW I just think he is the true American Idol. Inspiring story, amazing voice.

  • Clay, Do you ever read these comments? Please add this song to one of your albums. This song makes me bawl like a baby every time I listen to it. I've had a second hand heart at one point in my life (at least one). This song squeezes my heart and my soul. Just for the record, I've been married to the love of my live for 24 years, but I still remember when.

    Sudsy

  • What a beautiful voice!

He's 19 years old in this video and he already has this AMAZING voice!

MyMOAM2, you were right, i was surprised. When i've heard the first part of the song and then saw him,i couldn't imagine that he is so young!

Thanks so much for sharing this! :)

  • I would so love it if he would record this song now. I have only recently become a fan and WOW. That's all I can say. WHAT was I thinking? I thought he was a geek! Silly silly me! Who cares if he's a geek or WHATEVER, with a voice like that!!

  • what a beautiful voice.

  • Breathless, OMG he leaves me breathless ♥♥♥

  • I looooove the lower register of his voice, (even in Spamalot where his upper range is not so high-pitched) and wish he can showcase it as much as his soaring note-holding vocals. Oh whatever, his range is wonderful.

  • I wonder what this young Clayton Grissom would have thought, had he known in about four years, women would be screaming his name and saying how hot Clay Aiken is? :)

  • I think he is better as a tenor. It doesn't sound as natural and free flowing when he sings in a low voice.

  • He has an amazing voice. i would love to hear a country album from aiken someday.

  • okay so i loved that this was even before he changed his name to aikenn!!! it said clayton grissom!!!

  • i liked his voice deeper better...

    :)

  • I guess he's always been great, huh?! He looks like a little boy, but with such a big old voice!

  • his voice actually used to be a lot deeper than it is now

  • Will definitely do that as I wonder what he is up to now.

  • His hands made love to the mic even back then!

  • In so many ways he is still the same guy.

  • @cjscrabbler ....I am just now watching this for the first time and I thought EXACTLY to same thing!

  • Gary Morris recorded Second Hand Heart. He was a country singer with an excellent voice like Clay. If I recall correctly, he did a duet with Linda Ronstat and then did some kind of opera with her on Broadway. Gary, like Clay, could sing anythng. Gary also recorded the original of Wind Beneath My Wings a number of years before Bette Midler's recording.

His voice would certainly be worth a lookup on youtube.

  • Thank you, stargazed, for this info on Gary Morris. I have always wondered who sang this song.

  • My God!!!

It's always been the voice-that glorious voice.

What a wonderful gift God gaves us when he brought Clay into our lives.

  • WOW what a voice. I Love You Clay

  • WOW JUST WOW !!!

  • I love Clay Aiken! ♥

  • I just adore him. I wish I met him before he became famous.

  • Me , too. Though I'm 10 years older, I wonder what it would have been like to grow up with him and go to school with him.

  • does anyone know who sang this song originally?

  • Just so you know, that last comment I left was supposed to be a reply to the reply you left on my comment from a week ago! LOL!

  • I loved your story and I agree on how wonderufl it is to share our stories. I love all the views on this video ... wow. 12,467.

Congrats on going to your first concert !! He is one incredible entertainer. With his heavenly voice and his humour, he can bring you from tears to laughter in seconds. I will see him in August.

Check around Youtube for lots of videos of this tour. His Lover All Alone in Houston and the banter from Tulsa are outstanding.

  • This goes to show that (In Clays case anyway) When he performs he actually sings - not lipsync like many others. Clay has true talent and charm!

  • The voice and talent obviously were there before any of us heard of him.

  • There's no words. Just WOW! What a voice!

  • *sigh*

Love that voice... no singer has ever touched me the way Clay Aiken does, and to think that it took me over two years to love the guy!

And I'm a sucker for guys with glasses!

  • This brings tears to my eyes! I first downloaded this mp3 a few years ago, when I was 12 and going through some serious family problems. Listening to it again 3 and a half years later, it makes me really emotional. I've come a long way since then! I survived through my family problems, and I have no doubt a lot of my courage was, and still is, due to Clay, and his music, for giving me that temporary escape.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this! This made my night!!

  • Thank you for posting your story. I have tears in my eyes now from reading it, but also tears of joy that Clay's music was a balm for you during sad times and that times are better now. Truly a gift from God, Clay and his music have helped so many people. I am so happy for you.

  • Thank you so much for your compassion! I love posting my story, because I hope it inspires others to view Clay the way I do! I love hearing other people's stories too!

The other night in Houston, my 1st Clay concert, he shook my hand outside the venue, and was like a dream come true! I believe dreams come true now! I'll never forget that 1 second with his hand in mine! And watching this video again just makes me think of the concert, and it makes me smile!! Thanks again for posting this.

  • He is sOoOoO GOOD!!!

  • That voice is a gift from God... He also gave Clay the heart and the charisma to go with it :)I love the different ranges he can reach..and so effortlessly...Would love to hear him sing that on a tour...Love the lower register as well as those big notes. Clay truly is one of a kind! Thank you for posting this :)

  • I completely agree!

  • I wonder if this is what he is talking about when he says "Memory Lane". I love the lower register!!!!!!!!

  • Do you think so ? I would love to hear this at this summer's concerts. It is my favourite of his early songs. What a talent and a passion this man has !

  • It's amazing to me how similar a forlorn love song is still performed by Clay today. Head turned sideways and down, eyes partially closed, caressing the mike. *sigh* And the lower register and his range... incredible.

  • OH, you are so right ! Cannot wait to watch him perform Lover All Alone ... I surely hope he is performing it this summer.

  • he is awesome!!! :)

  • I love his older music, his lower voice and hey he wasn't bad looking then either!

  • Love his lower register -- we don't hear enough of it IMO. His talent was evident from years & years ago. I'm so thankful to be able to hear him singing today. I love his Lover All Alone that he wrote -- available only on iTunes. A beautiful song -- sung beautifully by Clay. His new CD is also so well done and a must have for those who enjoy love songs performed in different but lovely way.

  • His voice was awesome then, too. Love that Clay!!

  • Loved it! Clay has improved so much since those days, but his voice is always very special. We don't get to hear his lower register that much so this was fun to hear. I think he's wearing that hairstyle once again, but with longer bangs...LOL. I love Clay! He is always Number one in my heart!

  • That voice brings tears to my eyes when he sings this song. He sings it with such passion! Clay Aiken is number one in my heart! He is so great in concert too!

I saw him 20 times so far and two more times coming up. I do so love the low notes!

  • His demo CD is fantastic.

  • I don't like the way he sings, but he does it very very very very well... GOod thing Simon told him to drop those facial things

  • The geekiness is almost cool (:

  • yup, still adorable is he ^-^ and one hell of a sexy voice that just seems to sing only for you. he's magic

  • he was already awesome as a kid!

  • No wonder this guy is star now .. He is a solid performer.. And we as fans know this.. god bless him

  • Has anybody invented time travel yet? 'Cause that Clay Aiken is my age, maybe I'd have a chance!

  • His voice has definetly grown.

  • He sure has grown up. Great to see this old video.

  • Just wonderful. He's a natural talent.

  • This was so beautiful I had to watch/listen several times. Thanks for this!!

  • i'm having a problem watching the full thing...it keeps on cutting out with about less then a minute to go...anyone else experencing this?

  • I love hearing early Clay. It looks like someone taped it off the tv because you can see a reflection of a lamp on the screen. His voice was gorgeous even back then. Thank you for this video.

  • MyMOAM2, please check your messages. :)

  • What was this from? How did you come upon it. How old was he?

  • Sue, this is printed up at the top of this page:

This is 19/20 year old Clayton Grissom (aka Clay Aiken) at the Johnston Community College (NC) 1998 Country Music Showcase. ...

  • I have. never. heard this before. Whoever posted this is my hero<3 pretty much.

  • You are welcome !! He is just adorable and this song is wonderful. I would love for him to record it now !

  • He's adorable!!! And you can see its him, because of the way he sings, and his head turn down etc.

    Love the video! ;D

  • I am glad you like it !! He is toooo adorable !

  • check out lover all alone on youtube if you haven't - it's clay that is very unlike this video - he's the total package now - the next barry manilow!

  • Oh, no, better than Barry (except for the piano playing! LOL ) Clay has much more poise on stage than Barry did when he started out - took Barry many years to seem comfortable on stage. Plus Clay's voice is so much better than Barry's. I do like Barry, but Clay is a better performer.

  • he does NOT sound like he does now. it's a young talented man, yes, but he's much more skilled now, surely you all can hear the inability/knowledge of him not changing the notes at all. it's mostly just belting out the notes - he's so AWESOME now, top 5 live performers we have today!

  • Well, I would disagree that he was then just belting out the notes. The passion in his voice was there even at that young age. Yes his technique has improved, but what makes him the amazing singer he is was there all along. He emoted those lyrics and made love to the microphone even back then !

  • well, we can agree he is great now. :) I hear 1-5 people every night that sound better than this, but I hear 1 a week who sounds about as good as he does now. I would love to see him in concert some day. Saw Barry last year and he was phenomenal.

  • No I wasn't sayign I didn't like it. I do I love him. He has grown into a very talented man. He's matured into what he is now I love it I wasn't alking down on him.

  • He sounds like he did on AI nad now. It's amazing. I love his nerdy look. I love him

  • Now? He hardly uses his lower register any more.

  • He had a killer voice even then and the beautiful bone structure was there in his face giving a glimpse of what a handsome man he was going to become. He has something magic about him that just makes you love him to pieces.

  • he still melts my heart. no matter wut he looks like. :)

  • I would recognize his voice among one thousand! And you're all right about the mannerims! He hasn't changed about that! Even if he looks kind of "nerdy" with the glasses on, his voice still touches my heart, as it always has and always will. Go for it, clay!

  • I don't like country but I do love Clay Aiken and he has managed to reach me with his passion even as a young "nerdy" Clayton Grissom. HE HAS THE MOST AWESOME and RECOGNIZABLE voice. Yes...he has paid his dues and then some.

  • Sorry to correct you siobhan911 but Clay changed his last name before his father died. It's in his book"Learning to Sing".

  • Clay, you've paid your dues.

  • Ooooh..I will take your secondhand heart Clay. How beautiful..got a little tear in my eye. He still has the same mannerisms..turning his head and looking down and the hand action on the mike. Love it!

  • I was just going to say the same thing about the turning of the head and the mic stand caressing.

  • Yes, I noticed that right away. He was just as adorable then as he is now. Gotta love him!!!!!!!

  • Oh, yes, this is what is amazing to me -- the same mannerisms. I hope he never changes those !

  • I bet you're wondering why he is called Clayton Grissom, Thats because when his father died he had a change of name and last name to Clay Aiken

  • No, it wasn't when his father died. It was a couple of years after his father stopped being in touch with him. His father died after AI2, I think in 2004.

  • Beautiful, so beautiful. Love ya Clay

  • Awesome voice! Love him!

  • I don't think there is anyone who can't recognize this voice. And even though he eerily looks like the AI5 Clay imitator, this voice would never be mistaken for anyone other than Clay. It's amazing how a voice can take you places you have never been to, no matter how often you hear it. I just got all ferklempt as I watched him sing this. Come on Clay...come back to where you belong.

  • That is an awesome video, sure was always destined for stardom. I also love Clay

  • Wow, pre-Clay and the hair is different. He looks so young. I think it was fortunate he had the time to mature and grow and get his college degree before American Idol. Still he was as amazing then as he is now. Thanks for tubing this.

  • Actually Clay received his degree more than a year after AI2. He created his Bubel/Aiken Foundation and that allowed him to complete his requirements for his degree in Special Education. And we are all very proud of him!

  • OMG

    that is CLAY?!!!

    awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

that voice is his and those moves look like him..but that does not look like him at ALL!!!!!!

    <3

  • every performance... its just astounding. his voice is a gift from God.... effortless talent.

  • I want his secondhand heart! that brought me to tears!

  • this is soo coool i have beeen past that school since i live NC

  • oh my goodd! he's sooooo adorable! I love clay!!!!

  • Wow. I've heard him so many times but he always impresses me. Thank you for this special look at pre-Idol Clay. :)

  • geez. i can never come to terms with the fact that that voice comes from that body. miracle of nature. :D

  • Destined, indeed !! Thanks for the comments, Clayfulthing.

  • It's amazing that his voice was so powerful at that age! You can tell he was destined to be a star!

    Loved it, thanks!

  • I loved it.....his voice cuts right to the heart, and leaves me breathless...........so plaintive, and pure.

I adore Clayton Grissom/aka Clay Aiken
