I'm not a fan of Renee Fleming. Her Rusalka is okay, but this aria is sometimes as if she was skinning a cat. Luckily there are enough that her voice is beautiful
I agree with DruliaSnotter- Ms. Fleming's voice is so beautiful in this piece- and most everything else! However, I too would have liked what Bellini wrote better...
My personal feeling is that for bel canto, it's perfectly acceptable for a soprano to change some of the writing and add decorative touches and flair. Fleming isn't the only one who has done it - Beverly Sills was known for doing it sometimes. In the 19th century, bel canto sopranos did it as well, elaborating arias for dramatic effect or for their own glory. For bel canto, it's fine. But Fleming has unfortunately done it to Verdi, Puccini, Schubert, Strauss and everyone else!
Renee Fleming's personal feeling about how to sing her roles has made, I'll bet, more beautiful contributions to opera than your feelings have. @MastersoftheOpera
I agree with you. This role is written for lyric coloraturas. Her voice is too heavy for this role. (I mean...She isn't a lyrical coloratura, but has very beautyful dramatic voice.)
@athinasophia This role is for a soprano drammatico d'agilità (ie: Pasta-the first interpret-, Callas). It is only with the appearance of Patti that it was made popular for light coloratura vocal display.
@athinasophia Renee Fleming is a full lyric - certainly not dramatic - Callas for instance had a much much heavier voice and sung this role often and wonderfully.
I wish I could sing like her... but I'm a light lyric soprano, not a full lyric soprano... I'm only 15, though, so I don't know how my voice will mature yet and stuff...

@Hausisse I hope you find teachers to show you how to create a beautiful voice like Fleming's and not merely to stick to the rules.
