I remember watching that drama unfold whilst in a bar in Seattle - it was the day before I was due to fly back to Manchester (UK). Stunning piece of control by those pilots!
@Cytacon: How did they know the nosegear was screwed up before they landed?.
JM: There is a video screen called ECAM (pronounced ee-cam) and it stands for Engine Condition and Aircraft Monitoring. It displays system faults in an amber color. This fault read, "Steering Fault" because the steering wasn't centered. the logic was "steering not centered" as received from the BSCU...Braking and Steering Control Unit. BSCU reports to the warning computer which displays the fault. Simple really.
JM: In this case, it was determined that the steering computer was doing a normal self test after gear extention during which it turned the wheels to test the limit switches at far left and right. However the software had it doing this too many times and the travel limit stops cracked...they wore out. Software was modified to eventually eliminate this turning motion after gear extention. Read the NTSB report. People assumed wrong that it was mechanics fault.
That is one fucking amazing piece of flying. I hope that pilot got a medal. He keeps the nose up as long as possible and even after touching down keeps the weight off it by not braking (or very gently). And all this with the nose smack damn on the center line the whole time. Extremely impressive.
And I'm also impressed by the construction of that nose gear. You would think it would snap off or collapse, but no, it held all the way. The wheels or tires didn't even detach...
I think all the Airbus Models share the same problems with the following: Landing Gear,Approaching in Bad Weather specially with the A330,just recently Air Canada with an Airbus320 made an emergency landing because the Landing Gear error lights came on but landed normally..Airbus is trying to cut costs by using cheap parts....specially the newer a320's are being Manufactured in China...the problem with Boeing is Stability and turbulences
What I don't understand is why they stow the landing wheel at a 90-degree angle like that. In case of an emergency, I'd rather know that the wheel's going to be in position so long as it locks in place. That would've saved a lot of time and hassle in this situation, and may actually save some weight with not needing a recentering mechanism.
@Kelvari7882: What I don't understand is why they stow the landing wheel at a 90-degree angle
JM: It isn't stowed at 90. It wouldn't retract like that. In this case it was turned by the steering computer self test, AFTER gear extention. It was a software thing. They modified the software to eliminate this test. The test was wearing out the internal stops and it jammed at hard over. NTSB report is very interesting.
This isn't really a crash. It's an emergency landing with what most pilots would say is an unfortunate but totally manageable situation. Media calls it crash footage and our gullible and easily scared society gobbles it up.
This isn't really a crash. It's an emergency landing with what most pilots would say is an unfortunate but totally manageable situation. Media calls it crash footage and our gullible and easily scared society gobbles it up.
@justinjiang dude! this crash was breaking news on all news channels, people knew it would crash because at takeoff one of the landing gearsdidnt retract, so from then this plane was followed by the media..
Notice how the grinding front gear only strayed from the centerline of the runway briefly...the last few yards still on the dashed lines of the centerline.......excellent piloting skills.
Stop the hatred guys, both Boeing and Airbus almost have an identical record in mishaps and failures in history. I would not hesitate to ride in any one of them as long as it has a good pilot :o)
actually, they turned off the in-flight entertainment system (which means passengers wouldn't have been able to watch the news coverage), before attempted the landing.
well Allah helps when you ask Him to HELP ..Its better to go by good airlines nevermind even if they cos t much but nothing i smore imp then saving ur life partners life /family
They have dumping protocol on all civil aircraft without it there would be far worse crashes with over shooting runways because of weight and violent explosions.
120 knots is 138.2 mph!! Only military aircraft have the abillity do dump fuel, not civil aircraft for safety reasons!! but they are able to transfer fuel from one engine (wing fuel tanks) to the other!
LOL!!! No probs!!! It isn't fuel being dumped, Its the hot air coming out of the back of the engine and reacting with the cold air at high altitudes forming a steam like substance!! U see this when aircraft exceed 25,000 feet approx!!! Then again it may of been a large military aircraft but wouldn't dump fuel unless there was an emergency!!!
There are several commercial planes that can dump fuel. The A320, which is what this plane is, cannot. Instead, this one circled for 3 hours before landing to burn it off.
Most aircraft can dump fuel, the only aircraft that dont have the ability to dump fuel are smaller aircraft, like training planes. Cessna 172s /152s etc.
@prussell890: Only military aircraft have the abillity do dump fuel.
JM: Oh gosh, not true at all. Any aircraft must be able to land immediately after takeoff. In order to do that, some large planes have to dump fuel. It's a compromise between building bigger, heavier, landing gear or carrying less weight in fuel. Being able to dump fuel means they can carry more fuel than is safe to land with...because they can dump it. Lots of civ planes are so equipped.
So today (12/28/08) I flew from New York to Ft. Myers on Jet Blue. As I was boarding the plane I took a look at the name. It was "Canyon Blue." It sounded kind of familiar, but I couldn't place it. Then, it hit me halfway into the flight. I later confirmed on wikipedia that the plane in this video is Canyon Blue.
Friend........even i wanna be a pilot. Dont worry at max u can die (we can even die in our beds calmly while sleeping)......but till ur in that cockpit.....try ur best to let that bird perch down safely.
@kakanogomno i want to be a pilot also, i have my private license working on multi engine, you shouldnt be scared especially on jet-liners you are more likley to die in a car crash on the way to the airport than on the plane, planes are 22 times safer than cars and pilots of heavily trained for situations like these, this landing is like a walk in the park to those pilots the "usual".
That was an incredibly skillful landing.
