Sorry for final typo. I was referring to Jim bringing B J Thomas, to my Mum's Vardo. B J was then resident in London, stil famous but, PJ knew my Dad was a fan, so..B J went back to a reservation in the US shortly thereafter. B J was Jimi Hendrix' cousin! No Pikey's not an Americanism -it's what the Brits used to call us. Pikey, GYpo, Didiquoit, etc. What do I care. 'No Gadje would come except this 'wild Texan & his Cherokee pal, B J Thomas plus, PP Arnold & sundry folk.'
I was his friend, Music Director/Lead Trumpet for years, right through the 'Catch My Soul' era, until I moved to NYC. My dad was very ill & in a hospital. PJ offered to visit. I warned him we were Pikeys, he'd have to go to southall -a rough ethnic Ghetto -so he came. Then, he visited my Mum, in her Vardo - in a Camp. No Gadje would come except this half-Cherokee!
P J has a fantastic voice but nearly always over kills a song with the warbling ,I think he was trying to prove he was better than elvis,he could have been if only he did not keep over doing it,he never had to prove anything hes voice was goldnevermind hes an old man now and still warbling, never learns ha ha.
@theBESTelvis I agree with you he has a fantastic voice but warbles over the top, could have been one of the best.My first wife was one of his groupies when we were going out she used to go into his house in london with her mates, she even came back with a suade green short jacket he had given her for her fella? In fact I sent her one of his videos as he is now ,he can still put it over, good for him.Woluld like to see your videos, sweet dreems
@theBESTelvis Checked your site ,you need to record one good song in a studio with out clinking glasses and bottles and then listen to it back and put that up on site ,listened to daddy done a bad bad thing ,now thats what you call good entertainment, well done for that one
Nothing i can do about a noisy pub , theres a link on my page and under 3 of my videos...click it and hey presto....live home recordings minus public , oh by the way.... its called vibrato not warbling, and PJ's is brilliant, he uses it on the right songs and sings without when rocking up. many so called greats can't do that.
PJ Proby had a great voice and put a great show...unfortuanatley...if you didn't get along with some "Big Wig " producers/promoters you were banished from the stage...and that's what happened here...a real good talent, who many times "told it like it it1" and the "suits" didn't want to hear it1 ^/^
Never heard of him until I stumbled on him on YouTube. I thought at first he was some kind of a comedian, but soon realized he was for real. Though strange, has a very good voice.
OMG...theres a guy in canada,,has a similar last name,,i was trying to find Andy Probyn,,came across this mr Proby....have to tell you all...Andy Probyn sings like nobody I ever heard my ladies and I think hes the bomb,,,does Anyone know if the two are related..just THOUGHT would love to know...
James Marcus Smith's singing career started in 1958 as Jett Powers so he's been around 53 years. In 1964 he got his big breakthrough as P.J.Proby on the Beatles T.V. show shown around the world by satellite. He's had his ups & downs but the important thing is that he's still around & still has a lots of fans. His new U.K. tour starts towards the end of January. It's Elvis themed.
I just compared this version with Presley's. A studio version, at that. Elvis sounds like he just swallowed a cheese grater. I know, it's a far from easy song to sing, but Jim is exaggerating a bit too much here, forcing himself over the edge now and then.
@rontenn He was certainly popular when I was young, half a century ago! :) Nowadays, pop music is well and truly dumbed down- I feel sorry for teenagers of today with the drivel they have foisted upon them.
I've heard that P.J. DID record this song but it was only released in Canada on the Liberty label. Can anyone verify this & if it's true when oh! when wil we get to hear it on CD?? Ron
You are absolutely right. I hate bickering. I also rate P.J. as the greatest singer ever but of course not everyone agrees with that especially Elvis fans.Incidentally I really love Elvis too.I can understand his fans leaving comments & do not mind at all as long as they are constructive & well mannered. I would like to thank my good friend for sending me to your videos . I've just recently discovered you as a performer and I think you have an amazing voice and it's a disgrace that the entertainment industry has treated you so poorly over your career, I hope this gives you confidence that I respect you as a performer of great class, a fantastic version of (You'll Never Walk Alone) Best Wishes From South Australia.

lol, your enthusiasm is catchy. (it's on youtube) but Mr Brody maintained a cool attitude throughout. I got interested in the whole history of this guy when he got banned from playing certain venues in the UK. I'll keep my eyes peeled for when he's in London next!
P.J's rendition of this song is The Best . He puts so much feeling and depth into it and I'm so overwhelmed every time I watch and listen to him doing it.
I'm stunned..... I've just watched this clip for the first time... and I'm ..... His vocal range and control... I'm Stunned!! This has to be the best rendition of this classic EVER! and now, I'm going to sit here and play it again.
I'm so glad I got to see him on here...what a fabulous voice...I now live in the US being an UK ex-pat and I show everyone I know his songs on here...trying to convert them...Elvis fans here you know...I love this guy and watching on here brings back so many memories of how he made me feel then... by the way I'm a femaleI bit of the johnandi...
I second all you have said runstarshine, he had heaps of fans and the one time I saw him live he absoutely sent me to cloud nine, after he sang "Somewhere" he got a 10 minute standing ovation, I still have all of his LP's and he still makes what little hair I have left stand on end.
His version of "Somewhere" makes the film's soundtrack seem very insipid. When I first heard him on radio, I couldn't believe that someone so young sounded so mature.
Hi Read some of your comments & all the intelligent answers are correct. If we all thought same male Singer Best There would be no U Tube. Which is the greatest thing since Rock n Roll. Elvis without Doubt was the Greatest Talent for Voice & Showmanship. Roy Orbison Was THE VOICE admired by Fellow Artists as much as Fans. P J Proby has what No Other has Great Voice & Can Act a Song. Whats wrong with my World (Not Beat Club Version) His Best By Far. Tom Jones Powerful Voice of Teddyboy made Good
The first time I heard this version I said to myself: This boy is God's gift to mankind.
It's interesting that other people seems to have felt the same thing while listening to this track (that incredibly Proby never recorded for an album.)
I once told Jim about my feelings and he just smiled his usual smile and said: "No, I don't think so...".
For those of you who never met Proby: many d stories about him can be true, but as a person he must be one of the most humble stars that ever was.
Thanks for posting this video. The 1960s had some big voices, notably Elvis Presley, Tom Jones, Englebert Humperdinck and John Rowles (aka JR) -- but I prefer P.J. Proby to all of them. His rock records can sound dated because of the tinny production, but it's interesting to see his choice of material, which includes a lot of soul material that others wouldn't try. My favourite is his In Town Lp with the fantastic arrangements of show tunes. Magnificent voice and performer.
well I saw the show on Sunday and Proby was fantastic.Chris Farlowe was there too,but PJ brought the house down, his voice is so powerful and he is nice to his fans.
well im off out on sunday night to see pj proby in person i cant wait!! he is going to be in the north west doing a few songs with the searchers! i might throw him some nickers lol x
after all we are friends now hun, and jim does call us all his family lol
have a great time.
im waitin for him to do some solo shows with his own band coz i dont like any of the other acts on these 60s shows in stars in. and he only does about 25 mins.
enjoy your knicker throwing lol lol.. how old are you ?? lol xx
actually elvis' had roy hamilton's version in mind when he recorded it, we know this because elvis was a fan of hamilton and had his record in his personal collection. this goes for HURT also, you would only have to hear roys versions to see.
i have just watched an interview with proby where the question of elvis copying his style was put to him, he laughed and said "i should be so lucky" . if he doesnt believe that, then why do you insist on putting this view across? in another interview he admits using elvis' style on the demo's to sell the song to elvis, all the writers chose singers who could mimic elvis, in order for him to connect with their song. elvis had his style from 1953, elvis sounds like elvis!
EMI ARE RELEASING A CD FOR PJs 70th YEAR ON THE 16TH JUNE. ITS 2 NEVER RELEASED BEFORE TRACKS ON IT INCLUDING DELILAH WHICH WAS WROTE FOR JIM ORIGINALLY BUT HE HATED IT SO IT WENT TO TOM JONES, I FOR 1 CANT WAIT TO HEAR IT.
WE SHOULD ALL BUY THIS CD AND GET JIM BACK TO THE TOP WERE HE BELONGS.
HES THE GREATEST MALE VOICE ...EVER.
LONG LIVE JIM. CHECK HIS WEBSITE WERE U CAN PURCHASE THIS CD, AND SONG LISTINGS ARE ON THERE TO. ITS ONLY £6.99
I can't put into words how this song makes me feel. He is amazing. I used to kinda like Tom Jones until I heard about him taking Jim's place on the infamous tour when Mary Whitehouse sabotaged his career over splitting his pants. Thank you so much from someone who was born 6 years after this. He is still the greatest.
i agree. tom jones is a watered down version of pj and he might never have become a star if pj had been kicked off the beatles shows for splitting his pants, its a fookin joke coz spliting your pants on stage today would make you a bigger star.
WE THE FANS KNOW PJ IS FAR GREATER THAN TOM JONES AND EVEN TOPPLES THE AMAZING ELVIS...JUST.
I agree. Jim makes every song he sings his own. Elvis couldn't sing with Jim's range and projection. With all respect to the great man,P J is in a league of his own.
Yeah. If I could sing I would sing the way Jim sings. He is just so great. I am just in awe of him. One of my work-mates gave me a CD because he has always been a fan and it just blew me away. I first heard of him in a Led Zeppelin interview from the 70's years ago and never really bothered. I am so glad I did.I HAVE NEVER HEARD A BETTER SINGER ANYWHERE. Even the great Gerry and the Pacemakers version of this (I think) doesn't have the same vocal depth.
yes... pj has incredible depth in that awesome voice.... but also his top end is out of this world. he could hit huge operatic notes or the highest falseto ive ever heard.
COULD ELVIS SING A FULL SONG IN FALSETO ? NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS.
PJ's good - I've been a fan for 40 years, but to say Tom Jones and Elvis are lesser performers is just wrong, technically, visually and vocal delivery-wise; this, however, takes nothing away from how good PJ was.
this is a silly debate. both elvis and proby were great singers. pj had the edge because he's a great mimic and showman. he was a soulman and a balladeer. plus he had a little more personal magnetism.
pj proby had a bigger and better vocal range than elvis.....hed have been as bigger of a name 2day as elvis if it wasnt for the pathetic MPs and they wifes wrecking his career. pj had a lower range in his voice and could sing top end in operatic style or sing in full falseto..ELVIS COULDNT SING LIKE PJ A FULL SONG IN FALSETO TO SAVE HIS LIFE
sorry about the bad text as my computer was playing up but just wasnt to correct the name Proby....and also add I think he is good but just listen to Elvis sing this....and you will never be the same!!
Thanks Pardis for this video....only made me see Elvis just how great he really was.
tHIS ONLY GOES TO SHOW JUST WHAT KIND OF ICON eLVIS REALLY WAS! hE NOT ONLY MADE THIS SONG SOUND SO BEAUTIFUL BUT EVEN SHOWED THAT SOMEONE AS GREAT AS PRODY IS NOTHING IN COMPARSION TO HIM!! GOOD SHOW BUT eLVIS WAS....SIMPLY AMAZING!!
THANKYOU SO VERY MUCH FOR ALL THESE TRACKS YOU HAVE PUT ON HERE.. i THOUGHT i WOULD NEVER HERE HIM AGAIN. hE SHOULD HAVE BEEN SO FAMOUS , BUT FOR AALL THOSE JEALOUS OF HIM.. lOVE YOU JIMBO.... YOUR VOICE IS INCREDIBLE MAN..
I`ve emailed Liverpool Football club and thrown the challenge down! Invite the Legend along to one of your games and play this to his credit!! Watch this space Proby lovers!!
They need to invite PJ to sing this LIVE at Anfield. Maybe the problem would be getting Jim to go along but it would be fantastic publicity as I'm sure many people don't even know he's still on the scene and singing as wonderful as ever.
You can`t get better than TOP and this man is still there! Each time I watch this clip it I`m in 7th heaven! Thanks soooo much Brian for sharing it with us! Roll on spring/summer 08 when PJP will be touring the UK xx
Hi texkin, thanks for the reaction, this is the real thing, no studio for Jim, and at 69 he can still sing all his songs just as powerful next year he is touring all over the UK so go, listen and enjoy, also luck and succes in 2008!!
I've never heard PJ sing this before and I'm speechless!! This is the most heartfelt rendition of the song I have ever heard. What a voice, what a man. Wake up world this is the greatest singer ever.
THe most underated singer ever to appear on the music scene. What a voice, what a performer. PJ Proby gave his all in whatever he did. His live performances were worth their weight in gold. I truly appreciate the opportunity to watch this excellent rendering of a magnificent song.
Where was this (what country, city) & what show was this vid. from? I think this is the earliest vid. I've seen of the great P.J. Proby (still wish some of his early stuff on vid. would surface).

Whats wrong with my World (Not Beat Club Version) His Best By Far. Tom Jones Powerful Voice of Teddyboy made Good

Great Voice! .....too bad about the hair cut!
lunafesto 3 years ago

PJ Proby recorded this in 1964. Elvis recorded it in 1971. The similarities are too numerous. Elvis borrowed much from Proby.
Nefarioso 3 years ago
actually elvis' had roy hamilton's version in mind when he recorded it, we know this because elvis was a fan of hamilton and had his record in his personal collection. this goes for HURT also, you would only have to hear roys versions to see.
JAARNO88 3 years ago
i have just watched an interview with proby where the question of elvis copying his style was put to him, he laughed and said "i should be so lucky" . if he doesnt believe that, then why do you insist on putting this view across? in another interview he admits using elvis' style on the demo's to sell the song to elvis, all the writers chose singers who could mimic elvis, in order for him to connect with their song. elvis had his style from 1953, elvis sounds like elvis!

YES...but wheres the OFFICIAL PROOF ?????

recently saw proby in the northeast of England and he was fantastic, grown women were weeping, his voice was so powerful.

I can't put into words how this song makes me feel. He is amazing. I used to kinda like Tom Jones until I heard about him taking Jim's place on the infamous tour when Mary Whitehouse sabotaged his career over splitting his pants. Thank you so much from someone who was born 6 years after this. He is still the greatest.
otagomike 4 years ago
i agree. tom jones is a watered down version of pj and he might never have become a star if pj had been kicked off the beatles shows for splitting his pants, its a fookin joke coz spliting your pants on stage today would make you a bigger star.
WE THE FANS KNOW PJ IS FAR GREATER THAN TOM JONES AND EVEN TOPPLES THE AMAZING ELVIS...JUST.
theBESTelvis 4 years ago
I agree. Jim makes every song he sings his own. Elvis couldn't sing with Jim's range and projection. With all respect to the great man,P J is in a league of his own.
otagomike 4 years ago
PERFECTLY SAID otagomike. I COULDNT AGREE WITH YOU MORE.
PJ PROBY IS IN A LEAGUE OF HIS OWN. HE COULD OUT SING ELVIS ANYTIME.
theBESTelvis 4 years ago
Even the great Gerry and the Pacemakers version of this (I think) doesn't have the same vocal depth.
otagomike 4 years ago
yes... pj has incredible depth in that awesome voice.... but also his top end is out of this world. he could hit huge operatic notes or the highest falseto ive ever heard.
COULD ELVIS SING A FULL SONG IN FALSETO ? NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS.
PJ GIVES ME GOOSEBUMPS LIVE IN CONCERT....

PJ's good - I've been a fan for 40 years, but to say Tom Jones and Elvis are lesser performers is just wrong, technically, visually and vocal delivery-wise; this, however, takes nothing away from how good PJ was.
RR1804 3 years ago
proby is still the best singer.Elvis had his backing singers to help him reach the high notes ,proby does it by himself.
supergirltotherescue 4 years ago
this is a silly debate. both elvis and proby were great singers. pj had the edge because he's a great mimic and showman. he was a soulman and a balladeer. plus he had a little more personal magnetism.
littlebillysunshine 4 years ago
BOLLOCKS...
pj proby had a bigger and better vocal range than elvis.....hed have been as bigger of a name 2day as elvis if it wasnt for the pathetic MPs and they wifes wrecking his career. pj had a lower range in his voice and could sing top end in operatic style or sing in full falseto..ELVIS COULDNT SING LIKE PJ A FULL SONG IN FALSETO TO SAVE HIS LIFE
theBESTelvis 4 years ago
sorry about the bad text as my computer was playing up but just wasnt to correct the name Proby....and also add I think he is good but just listen to Elvis sing this....and you will never be the same!!
Thanks Pardis for this video....only made me see Elvis just how great he really was.

They need to invite PJ to sing this LIVE at Anfield. Maybe the problem would be getting Jim to go along but it would be fantastic publicity as I'm sure many people don't even know he's still on the scene and singing as wonderful as ever.

THe most underated singer ever to appear on the music scene. What a voice, what a performer. PJ Proby gave his all in whatever he did. His live performances were worth their weight in gold. I truly appreciate the opportunity to watch this excellent rendering of a magnificent song.
