i had no idea my great grandmother was teaching me how to make all this stuff from when she was a kid during the same time til i saw all these videos lol
I feel so happy to have found you. My mom taught me to make chicken soup & how to stretch that Sunday dinner to last the week. She 16 & the only one working in an extended family of 6.
I'm a 30 year old Infantryman in the US Army and I'm crying my eyes out watching this. She reminds me of my grand father who I grew up next door to. He's 93 now. What a great generation of people.
clara you are amazing! I wish i could spend a day cooking with you. Alot of your meals is how we cook here in my house. We have 8 people living under one roof. Times are hard and we barely scrape by but i think alot of your recipes are going to help! God bless you!
I have a lot of respect for those who lived through the great depression. They knew what it was like to live on hard times. Today, I doubt there are many who know what its really like to work hard for what you get. We have machines that do all the work for us, back then they had to do EVERYTHING by hand. I think this can really teach us something about being grateful for what we have. I'm not even 21 yet and I feel this way, it would be nice if others did too. :)
I LOVE this series. The meals, the cooking technique, and of course all of the wonderful stories and interesting facts from your life. You're amazing, Clara, I wish you were MY grandma! Thanks for doing all these fantastic videos!
hi carla. just wanted to tell u my 6 yr old daughter likes to watch your videos.God bless u. thanks for sharing your great stories. u remind me of my grandma.take care
God bless you! How is this different from regular cooking (asked below)? They used whatever they had and managed to make it SPECIAL. Now you can get a pkg of wafer cookies for a dollar in the store. But so many families from then said WE WERE POOR BUT WE WERE HAPPY.
Hello Clara, you are a true inspiration. Thank you so much for your recipes and your stories of The Great Depression. It's very interesting and I like the videos your grandson has made of this series. Best Wishes, Kate from the UK.
Clara, I love all your videos! In fact I watched all of them! I am only ten years old and I have your book on my Cristamas list! You are so nice, it seems like.Don't listen to any mean comments! Just forget about them. I on my moms profile. My mom said I can add you as a friend! Keep cooking on. P.S My favorite video of yours was the one where you made pizza. The pizza looked delicious. Bye
these videos remind me of my mom, bonnie g, who died 11 yrs ago from cancer. death sucks!!! even tho' i miss my mom every day & wish i cud talk to her, Clara cheers me up n reminds me how wonderful my mom was. even Clara's kitchen looks just like ours, when i was growing up, down to the stove! i also learn a lot about what it must have been like for my mom to grow up during that time.

What a charming lady. The food doesn't look bad at all. It definitely beats the Ramen Noodles we'll be eating when it all collapses again. Nice video. 166 people dislike this? The nerve. By all means, they can keep their heads burried.
@Stockpile1 theyll be hte ones begging for a meal when they cant afford fast food anymore. while the rest of us are eatign relatively well. thank you ms clara
What a wonderful lady, the exact image of my dear grandmother who was born in 1902 and passed away in 1987. My granny lived across the street and would always have homemade cookies and churros for us. She would stretch out biscuit dough into long tubes, cut them into 6"- 8" long pieces, drop them into hot oil until they browned, let them drain off, and roll them in sugar! Not the healthiest but, darn, they sure were good!
Its wonderful and i just ador her i was raised by my grandmother and he is gone now so its nice to see her cooking great food. I have been out of a job for quiet a while and is having trouble making ends meet but if i ever get enuff money i want her cook book so bad. all my love and my grandmothers because she would love you to.
great videos you have, really gives me insight into what life was like back than, plus some great cooking ideas when im low on food or need to save a few extra pennies
Clara, thank you for sharing your experience from so long ago. And, to your great-grand children who made this fabulous video. So remarkable. I will share this with all my facebook friends right now. Totally stumbled up on this and am glad I did!
I died in the depression 20 years ago in Florida while riding on the train ride at Disney World while strongly intoxicated singing "I just want to fly!" 2 hours later i was diagnosed with depression cancer and i died.
This lady is SO COOOL! She reminds me of MY paternal G'Mom! My Dad was BORN in 1930 and this is the kind of stuff Grandma used to teach me to cook. During the Depression she cooked on a woodstove and never would use a microwave. Thank you G'Mom and thank you Clara for the Great Memories! :)
Thank you Clara for sharing some of your history with us. My grandparents have all passed away, and I feel like I just spent 6:14 with my grandma. It was a valuable use of my time. Thank you for your wisdom and your spunk! :)
What an amazing lady. So much wisdom and life to share. I hope we all take a brief moment to glean the wisdom from the elderly folks around us. She is truly a beautiful woman and an inspiration. Thank you so much for sharing!
The depression oh..........yeah just like today, okay without any modern comparisons, specifics or technicalities I was trying got be funny but there has not been any real development since 2006.
This is precious. I am so glad that someone's child/grandchild has thought to do this. I hope more do likewise. What a great way to remember our grandparents. This family is blessed to have their grandmother with them and willing to do this. This will keep her young! I love it when she says "I don't got enough grease" I love it!!!!
This is precious. I am so glad that someone's child/grandchild has thought to do this. I hope more do likewise. What a great way to remember our grandparents. This family is blessed to have their grandmother with them and willing to do this. This will keep her young!
Thank you for sharing Clara. You are an inspiration to me. People do not realise how good they have it today....such conveniences available to us. When you wanted a meal back then, you really had to work for it.
@pcma Don't deny it doesn't exactly look like gourmet cooking, but if you would have read beyond the first sentence or two you would realize I'm actually complimenting the lady and the whole show
@PhantomSavage Y'know some people don't like to read. I also agree with your previous statements. "We only had cookies on Sunday" Could you imagine what would happen if we actually followed this wise advice? It's a historic and educational on good eating habits, don't you think? :3
@Zayashuku Deffinatly.... It's funny how opposite society is from back then. Back then people were dying left and right from food deprivation.... now they're dying left and right from heart failure because they're too fat XD. Inbetween there somewhere we hit a perfect balance, I'd say probably the 50's and 60's, but that's just me
The food looks like shit, and I'm sure it tastes like shit, but there's something here that you don't see on other cooking shows.... sure, the food is terrible, but it's historical, it has a past, and the woman cooking it grew up on this stuff, and is really passionate about it no matter what it taste like... bravo I say, bravo
@PhantomSavage This food looks great to me. I've always eaten plain cooking (had a mom who also grew up during the Depression) and it was *good*. Don't knock it because it doesn't look like a picture from a magazine. My friends used to love to visit my house because they knew they'd get some of my mom's good cooking.
I'm so glad I found these videos. I'm not really sure how I stumbled across them but this is probably the best youtube channel that I know of. I love Clara, she's my new role model!
Really interesting concept for a video. My Mother in law is a 75 year old Russian woman. When she was only a child Hitler invaded Russia. Her father was killed in battle and she grew up taking care of 2 younger sisters while her mother worked in a Soviet era factory. She can really tell some stories of having a rough childhood. Maybe I can convince her into being in some videos.
How wonderful for Clara to share her life through the recipes from her childhood and other memories. What a treasure to have those memories recorded for future generations. THANKS, Clara and thanks to your production (camera) crew too.
did this video make you ponder about old age? and how much we change through time, like this old lady could have been a real hottie when she was younger and real lively.......its quite depressive...*excuse the pun*
Let along the fact that they shouldn't force us by brainwashing to buy these useless environmentally harming plethora of products that no one actually needs to lead a happy life. That's why I like this video so much. Back then people lived freer lives, they enjoyed themselves and each others company. Nowadays people "compare" themselves to other people around them too much and they can't find peace or happiness.
Just watched the first of the depression series, very well made and really interesting, it draws you in like a movie. The lady is good at telling stories too. Congrats.
I'm going to dedicate a new face for Clara - ?

The food looks like shit, and I'm sure it tastes like shit, but there's something here that you don't see on other cooking shows.... sure, the food is terrible, but it's historical, it has a past, and the woman cooking it grew up on this stuff, and is really passionate about it no matter what it taste like... bravo I say, bravo

@PhantomSavage you should never talk like that about what other people eat. its so rude and inconsiderate

THANKS, Clara and thanks to your production (camera) crew too.

did this video make you ponder about old age? and how much we change through time, like this old lady could have been a real hottie when she was younger and real lively.......its quite depressive...*excuse the pun*
utsawin09 9 months ago
@utsawin09 "depressive"?
joedog96 9 months ago
Let along the fact that they shouldn't force us by brainwashing to buy these useless environmentally harming plethora of products that no one actually needs to lead a happy life. That's why I like this video so much. Back then people lived freer lives, they enjoyed themselves and each others company. Nowadays people "compare" themselves to other people around them too much and they can't find peace or happiness.

Just watched the first of the depression series, very well made and really interesting, it draws you in like a movie. The lady is good at telling stories too. Congrats.
