In preparation of today's final Eppy 4.13 I needed to fortify myself & came looking for one of my absolute favorite Gwen/Arthur moments. I love the hope and tenderness in Gwen's voice when she says: "It's what keeps me going". After her father being executed; Lancelot leaving her, Morgana turning on her....It really is Arthur that keeps her going.

@cerezacanela One of the things I like about the casting of this show is that none of the characters are stunning. Even Arthur. They're all very good looking, but none of them are so perfect that they're unrealistic. They're attractive, and natural like you said, and they feel attainable as a result.
She looks so cute here! Love how she has matured in the show and I too believe this is when Arthur started to lose some of his snobbish ways and actually saw people for who they were and not their title. Saying that was "The Moment of Truth" before this one? I am only asking because they had a significant interaction their too.Angel Coulby is gorgeous.
See originally they were going to have Arthur+Morgana, but then they decided it was too confusing and stuff because everyone knows what's going to happen in the end with Guinevere and Arthur, so in the 2nd season they introduced Gwen+Arthur and started with Morgause (Anna, Morgana's half sister) and now Morgana's evil, and a romance is blooming Gwen+Arthur. I'm still new to this so someone spare me--when do things change between Arthur and Guinvere. I started watching season 2, but went back to season 1, so far I've only seen two episodes but still very DISAPPOINTED to learn that Gwen didn't like Arthur , and he really didn't notice her but had a thing with Morgana...SO WHAT HAPPENED...without telling too many details. I just need an episode.

well one thing is right....this Gwen played by Angel Coulby is REALLY good at playing the maid role....too good at some point you can't really see hows she's gonna pull the princess/queen role in the next to come story or whatever.....can't they pick someone lookin' more gorgeous?prettier?at least put on some make up on girl...you look like a dirty maid just fallin from a horse back....!

I really dont understand why people are so obssessed with beauty. Yes Angel/Gwen isnt gorgeous. She doesnt oeez sex appeal. So what? She iss so sweet, so genuine. I totally agree! I was pleasantly surprised seeing a normal girl starring in the series. Personally I think Gwen looks more genuine and real. Morgana to me looks like a boring doll, she makes weird faces and she's just too perfect it gets soo boring.. she's too ladylike.. if she was a bit more tomboyish it would make her character more fun. I'm tired of all those beautiful, smooth-faced skinny girls getting the roles. I want to see someone real and authentic I can relate to.
I don't think that the Gwen is so ugly. It happens didn't have to compare with a so pretty actress like the Katie Macgrath. Because this Gwen seems so ugly, in the truth it is alone a normal girl.
Sorry to be repetitive, but this fact is something that makes me very upset. It's so rare to see a beautiful actress outside of North America in the circuit to be successful. Seeing as they've already turned half the legend up-side-down, I'm really crossing my fingers, hoping that the writers decide not to let Gwen have an affair with Lancelot. Athur/Gwen is so much better! And this scene really makes my heart flutter. The way he says "Guinevere"!
There actually have been quite a few Arthur/Guinevere relationships in movies/books/plays/television that were fairly loving, but I don't recall ever seeing it from a perspective where we got to see them falling in love and THEN getting married. The falling usually happens AFTER they are married.
I also haven't seen a re-telling that gave birth to so many Arthur/Guinevere fans, that is pretty nice. :D

We're going to get a proper love story, which is unexpectedly rare given it's one of the oldest couples in mythology.

I've seen many a time where the royal couple DID love eachother, but it hasn't been the usual setup, no that's true.
I don't know about the different comms out there, it could very well be the ship on 'Merlin' with the smallest base, but I was referring to the people who have a positive outlook on the relationship online and in general.
I remember watching 'First Knight' (with Sean Connery as King Arthur) and being one of the few people that liked Guin/Arthur more than Guin/Lance. :p
As for Arthur/Morgana, I get the feeling they are headed towards more a sister/brother aspect more so than anything romantic. I think Morgana herself will also begin to pull away from the other three of the core four, as it were.
I really think Arthur/Gwen is the ship that will get some focus in series 2 as they follow up with the seeds they planted here during this scene. Heavy focus? I don't know, but something for certain, with a side dish of Gwen/Lance at some point.

Not usually, in fact it is more common that though Guinevere has feelings for Lancelot, so too does she love her lord king and puts herself in a convent before she would betray him by laying with Lancelot.
The writers of 'Merlin' said they had Lancelot provide 'fake' papers of nobility as a means of a 'betrayal' with Arthur, instead of the Guinevere/Lancelot affair. So I don't think we'll ever see that on this show . . . but a little love triangle? perhaps, though nothing major.

I think it was on commentaries for the show perhaps. I live in the states so I have to wait for a Region 1 friendly version. The folks at LJ mentioned it more than once, and I've no reason to suspect they were lying.
It was worded that it was meant to be 'instead' of the Gwen/Lance affair. As a replacement I don't know, but I think that makes sense as I doubt we'll have Gwen/Arthur married on the show until the very last.

Ah ty, that makes sense, I never did listen to the Lancelot commentary...
Because idk if they intended to portray Lancelot as a wee bit dodgy, but that's how it came out, for all his noble intentions. He could only beat Arthur in a fight if he tricked him, he did betray Arthur's trust... I really liked him, but I thought those quirks were all little warning signs.
I think Gwen and Lanelot's love might always be unspoken between them before marriage... :/
On 'Merlin' I think Lancelot would hold a torch for Gwen but not do anything untoward, and I think "Merlin's" Guinevere also doesn't seem the type to cheat.
I thought Lance did some dodgy things in his episode, but then he recognized that and that's why he left, to regain his lost honor, more or less.
'Merlin' pays good homage to other legends, but also does its own thing, so I haven't a clue how they will handle Arthur/Gwen/Lancelot. I just hope for the best & for more Arwen. ;)
it really is a double edge sword. if they're not gonna follow the legends, they're more likely gonna follow through with the morgana/arthur pairing they've already established. if they DO follow through, gwen and arthur marries but gwen would grow to love lancelot more and she will be having an affair with him. either way. arthur/gwen is screwed.
Unlikely. They like having their legends ultimately become what we recognise. Also, Morgana's cracking up and might not have time for her extended ...things... with Arthur.
And I doubt they'll get so far into the legends that we'll see Gwen cheating on Arthur. Fortunately. :D
but you gotta admit... there's a reason why they've set up arthur/morgana and there's a reason why they're bringing back lancelot -- they're already setting up the love rectangle easily recognizable in the books... where arthur and gwen are married, loved each other but, ultimately, was broken apart by a deeper love they've had with someone else... gwen/lancelot more canon than arthur/morgana though.
But all the signs look like they're planning a love story between Arthur and Gwen too, which means there must be a reason Arthur and Morgana don't work out. Because otherwise, yeah, that would be the obvious, convenient, logical union for Camelot.
I think they've set up the love between A/M, but due to bad timing and Morgana's career choice, it's unfortunately never going to be fulfilled, and they'll end up mostly as siblings...
i agree that they're setting up arthur/gwen as well. i'm not saying arthur/gwen NEVER fell in love. in the texts, arthur/gwen DID fall in love BUT it was found out eventually that gwen's love for lancelot (canon) and arthur's love for morgana (revisions) was stronger. argur/gwen's love was a marriage of respect and convenience. but, imho, gwen/lancelot and arthur/morgana did have the more complicated, more PASSIONATE kind of relationship. and, thus, heart won over reason.
I'd contest that! Guinevere's problem wasn't necessarily that she loved Lancelot more so much as she loved them equally and could never choose. And Arthur/Morgana... is only a revision if you take Mists of Avalon as canon. I adore the ship, but it's totally messed up. They're vaguely related! She's moderately evil! It's only ever passionate because it's illicit! :P
And Arthur was golden, he wasn't tempted during his marriage at all. Chances are he loved Guinvere wholeheartedly.
i never really got the impression that gwen loved them both equally. in all the mediums i've seen and read, i think she was always much much more passionate with lancelot. could it be because it was forbidden, thus making it more exciting for her? thus, making it seem like she was more passionate for lance? can be argued that way. but still. there was no arguing she was much more passionate with lance.
as for arthur/morgana... i did say they were mainly just canon in revisions. and the fact they're messed up - that's what makes them so intriguing! they can do so much in those kind of storylines then just have the typical "i love you, you love me, let's got together, it's you and me forever, baby!" story.
Yeah, passion is heightened by murky waters, which is why Lancelot and Morgana seem like more exciting affairs. But of course Guinevere was conflicted - she had the two best men in Camelot, and couldn't break it off with either!
I think in the face of all these complicated relationships, a slow, simple love story unfolding between the prince and the handmaiden will be a joy to see. They're going to share a v different sort of bond.

Is the woman who will betray Arthur with Lancelot. I don't think so. I seriously don't think that she will betray Arthur. it's soooooooooo two much WAY out of "character". This guinevere is a servant not a spoiled princess. The writers may add the love triangle, but i bet that Guinevere will never cheat. The reason why i don't like Lancelot is because he has no personality

She's been done up in s2 so that Arthur is even likely to NOTICE her! Not a very good message to send out! I would have liked it if they kept her the way she was

I really dont understand why people are so obssessed with beauty. Yes Angel/Gwen isnt gorgeous. She doesnt oeez sex appeal. So what? She iss so sweet, so genuine. Only beautiful girls fall in love with a handsome man? Men only fall for beautiful women? Seeing a normal woman is a nice change imo when we are suffocated with "gorgeous beauties". I totally agree! I was pleasantly surprised seeing a normal girl starring in the series. Personally I think Gwen looks more genuine and real. Morgana to me looks like a boring doll, she makes weird faces and she's just too perfect it gets soo boring.. she's too ladylike.. if she was a bit more tomboyish it would make her character more fun. I'm tired of all those beautiful, smooth-faced skinny girls getting the roles. I want to see someone real and authentic I can relate to.

Sorry to be repetitive, but this fact is something that makes me very upset. It's so rare to see a beautiful actress outside of North America in the circuit to be successful. When she appears, we must celebrate. Katie MacGrath is a goddess. And Gwen compared to her is only a poor woman.Should have chosen a more beautiful actress. During the display of Merlin can only think: I do not think they are not showing the goddess of Morgana to show the ugly Gwen, and that's it.

There actually have been quite a few Arthur/Guinevere relationships in movies/books/plays/television that were fairly loving, but I don't recall ever seeing it from a perspective where we got to see them falling in love and THEN getting married. The falling usually happens AFTER they are married.
I also haven't seen a re-telling that gave birth to so many Arthur/Guinevere fans, that is pretty nice. :D
I wonder how many more Arwen fans will arise in S2. ;) I know 'I' am already hooked.

I've seen many a time where the royal couple DID love eachother, but it hasn't been the usual setup, no that's true.
I don't know about the different comms out there, it could very well be the ship on 'Merlin' with the smallest base, but I was referring to the people who have a positive outlook on the relationship online and in general.
I remember watching 'First Knight' (with Sean Connery as King Arthur) and being one of the few people that liked Guin/Arthur more than Guin/Lance. :p

As for Arthur/Morgana, I get the feeling they are headed towards more a sister/brother aspect more so than anything romantic. I think Morgana herself will also begin to pull away from the other three of the core four, as it were.
I really think Arthur/Gwen is the ship that will get some focus in series 2 as they follow up with the seeds they planted here during this scene. Heavy focus? I don't know, but something for certain, with a side dish of Gwen/Lance at some point.

I know! I didn't really notice that until I transcribed this scene. He smiles, sighs and lays back in bed. That and listen to the soft way he says 'You stroked my forehead.'
I think Gwen secretly struck a chord with Arthur over her care of him.
I say secretly because he didn't tell her, of course :p, but I think she got to his heart a little bit from his reactions in this scene.
I can't WAIT to see what happens between them after this scene, in series/season two! :D

Not usually, in fact it is more common that though Guinevere has feelings for Lancelot, so too does she love her lord king and puts herself in a convent before she would betray him by laying with Lancelot.
The writers of 'Merlin' said they had Lancelot provide 'fake' papers of nobility as a means of a 'betrayal' with Arthur, instead of the Guinevere/Lancelot affair. So I don't think we'll ever see that on this show . . . but a little love triangle? perhaps, though nothing major.

I think it was on commentaries for the show perhaps. I live in the states so I have to wait for a Region 1 friendly version. The folks at LJ mentioned it more than once, and I've no reason to suspect they were lying.
It was worded that it was meant to be 'instead' of the Gwen/Lance affair. As a replacement I don't know, but I think that makes sense as I doubt we'll have Gwen/Arthur married on the show until the very last.

Ah ty, that makes sense, I never did listen to the Lancelot commentary...
Because idk if they intended to portray Lancelot as a wee bit dodgy, but that's how it came out, for all his noble intentions. He could only beat Arthur in a fight if he tricked him, he did betray Arthur's trust... I really liked him, but I thought those quirks were all little warning signs.
I think Gwen and Lanelot's love might always be unspoken between them before marriage... :/

On 'Merlin' I think Lancelot would hold a torch for Gwen but not do anything untoward, and I think "Merlin's" Guinevere also doesn't seem the type to cheat.
I thought Lance did some dodgy things in his episode, but then he recognized that and that's why he left, to regain his lost honor, more or less.
'Merlin' pays good homage to other legends, but also does its own thing, so I haven't a clue how they will handle Arthur/Gwen/Lancelot. I just hope for the best & for more Arwen. ;)

it really is a double edge sword. if they're not gonna follow the legends, they're more likely gonna follow through with the morgana/arthur pairing they've already established. if they DO follow through, gwen and arthur marries but gwen would grow to love lancelot more and she will be having an affair with him. either way. arthur/gwen is screwed.

Unlikely. They like having their legends ultimately become what we recognise. Also, Morgana's cracking up and might not have time for her extended ...things... with Arthur.
And I doubt they'll get so far into the legends that we'll see Gwen cheating on Arthur. Fortunately. :D

but you gotta admit... there's a reason why they've set up arthur/morgana and there's a reason why they're bringing back lancelot -- they're already setting up the love rectangle easily recognizable in the books... where arthur and gwen are married, loved each other but, ultimately, was broken apart by a deeper love they've had with someone else... gwen/lancelot more canon than arthur/morgana though.

But all the signs look like they're planning a love story between Arthur and Gwen too, which means there must be a reason Arthur and Morgana don't work out. Because otherwise, yeah, that would be the obvious, convenient, logical union for Camelot.
I think they've set up the love between A/M, but due to bad timing and Morgana's career choice, it's unfortunately never going to be fulfilled, and they'll end up mostly as siblings...

i agree that they're setting up arthur/gwen as well. i'm not saying arthur/gwen NEVER fell in love. in the texts, arthur/gwen DID fall in love BUT it was found out eventually that gwen's love for lancelot (canon) and arthur's love for morgana (revisions) was stronger. argur/gwen's love was a marriage of respect and convenience. but, imho, gwen/lancelot and arthur/morgana did have the more complicated, more PASSIONATE kind of relationship. and, thus, heart won over reason.

I'd contest that! Guinevere's problem wasn't necessarily that she loved Lancelot more so much as she loved them equally and could never choose. And Arthur/Morgana... is only a revision if you take Mists of Avalon as canon. I adore the ship, but it's totally messed up. They're vaguely related! She's moderately evil! It's only ever passionate because it's illicit! :P
And Arthur was golden, he wasn't tempted during his marriage at all. Chances are he loved Guinvere wholeheartedly.

i never really got the impression that gwen loved them both equally. in all the mediums i've seen and read, i think she was always much much more passionate with lancelot. could it be because it was forbidden, thus making it more exciting for her? thus, making it seem like she was more passionate for lance? can be argued that way. but still. there was no arguing she was much more passionate with lance.

as for arthur/morgana... i did say they were mainly just canon in revisions. and the fact they're messed up - that's what makes them so intriguing! they can do so much in those kind of storylines then just have the typical "i love you, you love me, let's got together, it's you and me forever, baby!" story.

Yeah, passion is heightened by murky waters, which is why Lancelot and Morgana seem like more exciting affairs. But of course Guinevere was conflicted - she had the two best men in Camelot, and couldn't break it off with either!
I think in the face of all these complicated relationships, a slow, simple love story unfolding between the prince and the handmaiden will be a joy to see. They're going to share a v different sort of bond.
