In halo 3 you can customize your character and make him look different with armor. Recon used to be the hardest armor to get, because they're were only 2 ways to get recon, which was either beating an employee of the game in Halo or sending an email to bungie as to why you should have it. It's easy to get today though. Now you can just get a few achievments and it's yours.
