Well race is a socially constructed idea so there would be no scientific bases necessarily. BUT from my understanding of racism and how it has been (and continues) applied to society, is that racism is "a system of advantage based on race". Look it up and go past the dictionary's defition which does not go in depth. (After look at who made dictionaries and put so many negative connotations with the word black but that's another story)

African American is relevant in the case of Barack Obama, whose father is African, and mother American. Maybe Kenyan-American would be a more specific term, but African-American is correct.

"Black" with a capital "B" academically refers to Americans of African heritage that have a family history of the Black Experience in America. Obama's mom is 100% white, his dad is Kenyan. This makes Obama 50% Kenyan American and 50% "White," NOT Black, NOT African American.
