I agree it's an amazing talent. His melisma is amazing and he does not try to show off, the way so many sopranos do. IT's very accurate, in terms of historical performance practice. Someday, people will stop looking at the sex of the performer, and evaluate the performance!

I am a natural male contralto. Philippe Jaroussky is extremely handsome and his voice is excellent but I fail to see what sets him apart from other sopranists other than his looks.

Also, to be politically correct in the modern age, a man has the right to sing at any octave he wishes. I don't really enjoy the counter-tenor type of voice. If I see a man singing, I'd prefer a more masculine timbre. Just saying!! I wish him success though. He is technically accurate.
Philippe is a master of this genre! His voice is full and beautifully rounded. His technique is superb as is his tuning throughout. I get a sense (quite rightly) that he is leading this beautiful performance and that the conductor is just there (as good as he is) to maintain the impetus of the piece. Exactly as demanded by the baroque style. Jaroussky is a genius and a voice in millions - long may he continue to thrill audiences worldwide.

@AdriaFloriDeSoc No, this Harpsichord is absolutely normal : on many harpsicord there is a little lever which activates pieces of felt which muffle the strings and it gives this particular sound. It's called "lute" stop, I think you guess why... I apologize for my very bad english.

What is the point of comments regarding his sexual orientation or that his singing should be left to a woman? If women are auto mechanics is it wrong or are they a lesbian? It seems the world embraces women changing their roles as female but males are expected to maintain the traditional role of what a male should be. It would be ashamed if Philippe kept his wonderful talent and gift from the world because of narrow minded people. Gay or straight, who cares? Does it make him any less talented?

@ikelleners ok... you obviously don't know the tradition of contratenors that well... being a contratenor is not copying a woman's voice. Also, to be politically correct in the modern age, a man has the right to sing at any octave he wishes. The reason why contratenors are sought after is that the soprano that contratenors sing often have more fuller sounds than women.

I don't really enjoy the counter-tenor type of voice. If I see a man singing, I'd prefer a more masculine timbre. Just saying!! I wish him success though. He is technically accurate.

Philippe is a master of this genre! His voice is full and beautifully rounded. His technique is superb as is his tuning throughout. I get a sense (quite rightly) that he is leading this beautiful performance and that the conductor is just there (as good as he is) to maintain the impetus of the piece. Exactly as demanded by the baroque style. Jaroussky is a genius and a voice in millions - long may he continue to thrill audiences worldwide.
