...I was holding onto my father's back and my mittens couldn't grip his parka very well. Every few moments we'd hit a peak of ice (frozen wave?) and I just knew I'd fly off the back of that thing and be lost forever. Crazy, crazy times! I think our radio back at the village had quit working and he needed to get a message out and thought a day trip to Port Clarence with the fam, would be a hoot. All I remember seeing was the tower and a small building poking out of the ice.
I went there once in '78? -'79? I was 5yrs. old at the time. My parents took us (my sister was 3 yrs. old and sat in front on my mom's snowmobile) across the ice flows on snowmobiles, from Brevig Mission. My father was the Superintendent over the construction of the High School. Scariest ride of my life! We left later in the day than we probably should have and it started getting dark so, my father drove like a mad man to get to "Port Clarence".
I was at PC for a year in 1970-1971... I will never forget this place. I once built a sail car and 3 or 4 of us would get on it and ride up and down the road to the runway. It would reall fly. No brakes! I just found out about the antenna being taken down... how sad. from the looks of the pictures things didn't change too much.
