Mama Cass was the bomb and there's not too many singers today who can lay down vocals the way she could. She was a fine performer and proud of it( and she should have been).Peace.
I LOVE Mama Cass! The world lost something when we lost her and Karen Carpenter. Nobody will ever sing like them. If there truly is a rock and roll heaven, I hope I can go there and meet her someday.
@59Skott – You had a crush on Cass? I can certainly understand that. She was the soul of the group, and kept everyone together when they went through crazy times (Michelle’s affairs, etc). Without her, the group would have gone nowhere. This video was shot in Sep 1966 at DeVoss, a “mod” clothing boutique on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood. I was born less than a mile from this very spot, 8 years before.
The mamas and the papas wouldn't be nothing without Cass.... just admitt it, they were a special group in witch every member was important..They would be nothing without Denny and his angelic voice, they would be nothing without John and his magnificent songs, they would be (and were for a while) nothing without beautiful Michelle and they would be nothing without Cass and her fantastic voice!..Denny+John+Michelle+Cass = unique and the most fantastic band ever ;) i do not despise any of them
Michelle Phillips, has to be one of the greatest natural beauties of all times. And I love vocal harmonies like this. They don't make music like this anymore. No more harmonies like this. Sad.
Unfortunately, we lost John, Denny and Cass...Michelle still lives...One of the greatest bands of the flower power music era...Not to forget the huge talent they got...I Saw Her Again Last Night is definitively one of my personal favourites...Luckely I've got dvd's with nearly all of their greatest tv performances in my collection...Never or never I'm gonna get rid of these dvd's...Thanks J.D.C.M...
Crazy how the lyrics refelct a really painful time for all of them....and yet the video shows them all having an absolute ball, enjoying the fruits of their success. The Mamas and Papas were in a class of their own ! Gorgeous !
I'm 15 and have such appreciation for this era of music, the mamas and the papas are by far my favorite group. And let's face it, the mamas and the papas wouldn't be anything without Mama Cass. Sucks how music is these days, Cass took all talent with her when she passed. and btw.. what is she holding at 0:24? haha oh cass
@molllllllly I would guess that she is carrying her baby daughter. It definitely looks like a baby, and she had her daughter around the time this song came out.
I love Cass Elliott and she was a fabulous singer...real soul! The thing I really love about this song is the error that was made during recording that they left in (I saw her...I saw her again last night...). Just goes to show that perfect planning isn't always the best.
People leave ill comments because they are rude, jealous or have nothing better to do. They feel they get attention making fun others because their lives are unfulfilled so they have to leave remarks to make themselves feel better... it's sad, but that is the type of world we live in...
@ToxicTurquoise454 At the time, the main venue for featuring these singles destined for AM Top 40 radio was a transistor radio, car radio, or cheesy mono record player, so true hi fi sound wasn't always deemed necessary by some record companies. If the original masters still exist, they could certainly transfer the analog tapes to digital and do a cleaner and brighter sounding stereo mix so all the instruments and voices would be heard more clearly.
My god these people were the *epitome* of LA proto-hippie chic in the summer of '66, weren't they? I think only The Byrds outdid them in sheer hipness at this time, though it was close!
According to Michelle's book, Denny had a great voice and could sing anything. I agree, but Cass had a voice of warmth and character. Something a person is given. Cass showed it as a solo too. Her death from heart attack was due to numerous factors, but as much from the thrill as she was in London and had sold out her concerts.
John had the songwriting, Cass had the best voice, and Lou Adler and the wrecking crew had the sound. When working out songs in the Caribbean (in Creeque Alley and bistro/bars), Cass waitressed and sang along as she was intimidated by being up there. If she had never gone on stage the group wouldn't have had the success it did. A lucky combo of talents and desires. Read their biographies to see how.
@909chuck Without taking anything away from Cass, who did have a fine voice, saying that she had the best voice underrates Denny. His solos are part of what made California Dreamin' the song that put them on the map. I think Michelle was was the one who described discovering him as they had been going along as folksingers and here was this guy who could sing like Mel Torme.
what silly comments are being left on these pages. people going overboard to single out cass as "the talent" of the group. nonesense.the success of this group is it's harmonies and arrangements. the blending of male and female voices give their sound layers of rich harmonics.michelle's soaring soprano with cass's low alto work to perfection. denny's tenor and john's baritone likewise. michelle did wonderful work on 12:30 young girls coming to the canyon, and dedicated to the one I love. wake up!

Never mind, just read it. She passed of a heart attack at age 32. What's odd is that the room she was renting when she died, is the same exact room Keith Moon rented years later and also died in; at the same exact age!
Love them :). I can listen to their music over and over again and never grow tired of it. On another note, anyone else think that Denny looked handsome with that beard and mustache? :)
"Any derogatory comments about Ms Cass Elliot's personal appearance will be removed and the user blocked." Um.... why would anyone do that? Serious. I still have a crush on her and wish she were alive today.

@ReevesPete In fact, I just read back aways on this board and it felt like a dusty old Department Store. It's funny but my big woman is pretty quick-witted and can handle herself pretty good. She's alot more fun than reading this generic heroic dialogue. I betcha Cass could handle herself too and didn't need every other man to fight her battles for her. By your Works are ye made...
@Joe22c Yes it was, as I remember a video on here some year ago of them performing it on a TV show. I don't know which show it was. Sadly, the video's long gone now.
@Pamfino2 As sad as it may be that the video is gone, the performance was most likely just a lip sync like most of the performances at the time, including most of theirs. Still, there's not much video of them around, so anything is a gem.
@calbff yes that song espec would have been almost impossible to perform live and sound like the recording, too much production, all the strings and harmonies, layered sounds..it was most def a ip synch as were most tv show/performances of bands hits..
This is my favourite by the Mamas & the Papas too, No.11 in the UK in 1966 and still sounds great today. Only Michelle left now, but what great sounds they left behind.
I can still remember hearing of Cass Elliot's passing on the radio, back in July or August of 1974. She was over in England performing at the London Palladium Theater ~ so sad, she was somewhere around 34 I believe.
Such a cute video! Love it! Cass's voice still stirs joyful thoughts. She was my favorite of the group, I met her one time in California where I used to live. Wonderful, joyful person! She had a heart of gold and personality to match! Had long talks. Very impressive, intelligent and beautiful woman. Had a crush on her for years. One of the greatest groups of the Swingin' Sixties! I Love You, Cass! God bless and rest your immortal soul!
@59Skott Did you have a crush when you met her, because if you did you must have considered yourself really lucky to meet her! I wish I could meet Willem Dafoe!
@Mirani2 Yes, I had a BIG crush on Cass before I had even met her. Then when i met her...WOW! Great person! She and Michelle took me and my brother to the Brown Derby restaurant...that was where to go to meet celebrities back in the day.. I considered myself lucky and very blessed to have met such a fine woman. I went to jail one time because of her...a supposed buddy of mine was calling her vicious names concerning her weight. I got very angry and popped him in the nose. Ah, youth...
@xXTempsXx LOL I thought so too. Michelle was pretty but Cass was the talented one. But, to my surprise, they were actually very close especially after the band broke up and Michelle divorced John. They'd hang out with their daughters (Chynna and Owen) and the night before Cass died she called up Michelle and told her how happy she was.
Thanks for sharing this fantastic song ; perhaps their best ever....and that's saying something as i've never heard a bad record by them. Good lyrics too - a nice twist on the usual sentimental "boy loves girl" story.
Cass was the real star of the group and I think she knew it...She coulda had her pick among thousands of adoring male fans of this group...Some folks look at what a person can do instead of what they look like!
This is a great song, but suffers from a poor master audio mix, the instrumentals centered-channeled (mono) with the vocals split off to the l/r channels but under-volume. Digital remastering to bring out the vocals sounds better, but it's nice to hear the original too.
@pbanta62 Remember that this was recorded in late '65 or early '66, so the original analogue master is probably only four tracks. It's a complicated enough recording that there undoubtedly were several "bounce downs" to free up tracks, which has the side effect of collapsing everything that was bounced down to a mono signal. Obviously one set of vocals is hard left, one is hard right, and it sounds like they might be using two for the instrumentals. (cont)
@pbanta62 Also, they were just starting to use stereo for rock and pop, and there was a lot of panning hard left/right to emphasize the "stereo" sound.
The vocals are much clearer in headphones, because they're solidly in one ear or the other.
This should be played mandatorily in all schools to show how harmonies, melodies, musical score and overall arrangement make a great song - not profanity, sex, nudity and rubbish rhymes - the sooner hip hop or R&B or whatever it is called dies a slow death the better
@09bnunez.......been living with that "mistake" since release in 66...it was purposely left in thus adding special character to an already unforgettable performance.
why the fuck would anyone talk shit about mama cass? she made the group! mamas and the papas, ccr, and the beatles WERE,, ARE, AND FOREVER, will be the sixties/seventies. this is coming from a HUGE, HUGE, HUGE, beatles fan. its a shame, that since these three gianst, we only have had substitute teachers, no one that great......
@dodgebury I think there had to be some sort of shows or something that showed "music videos" even in the 60's because if you look around online there is produced video for almost every hit song back then even though that was the pre-MTV generation.
i remember hearing that song for the first time waking up one morning from an old tubed radio that use to get hot and cut out ..makes me feel young again hearing it...god that must of been in the stone age..what has happened to the time..thx 4 posting this song
I love when Mama Cass does her little dance when she enters the store (the pony?). She was the real singing talent and I wish I could have met her out of all of them. Beautiful Beautiful woman!
@mikegoons no way is that the pony....the pony was when you jumped up and down in place, switching feet back an forth, and your hands were up near your chest like u were holding the reins of a running horse.. what she did was something on her own little two step.. and no one could touch the M&P's when they were on their game for telling it like it was to live in and around hollywood. just ask lou adler.
this isn't fair, my grandparents got listen to this & all I get is are idiots Taylor Momsen & Lady Gaga...I got cheated, let's bring back the good stuff like this where people actually had talent & voices...sigh, guess I'll just have to keep on finding old LP's & 45's on amazon...ps I love Dancing Bear by them too
@StillMeHereThe1 I loved your comment----- dont see how young people today survive with the music.. I was only 16 in 1967 (which puts me old as dirt now) but we had the greatest music ever !!!!!!!!!!

The motivation for writing this song confuses me sometimes. We have all heard stories about how it is either Cass or Michelle that is being referred to, but it is written by BOTH the guys. Is it just random, or some personal experiences from highschool days or something?
THIS SONG WAS A PAYBACK FROM JOHN PHILLIPS TO DENNY FOR SLEEPING WITH MICHELLE PHILLIPS. EVEN THOUGH DENNY DID NOT WANT TO SING IT, JOHN CONVINCED HIM TO DO THE TRACK. THE BIGGEST LOSS HERE IS CASS ELLIOTT; WHAT A POWERFUL VOICE AND PERFORMER!
ARE YOU KIDDING ME.. MAMA CASS, SHE WAS THE BEST! i GREW UP WITH THEIR MUSIC...IM GOING THRU THE WHOLE PLAY LIST RIGHT NOW...IT MAKES ME FEEL GOOD HAPPY...AS A FLOWER CHILD OF THE 60'S
@NikkiesMommy2008 if you ever get the chance to hear cass sing with the mugwumps; it is priceless. "wild women" is so bluesy; it makes the hair on my neck stand up!
Mama Cass was a large woman....the only thing larger than Cass was her talent and her voice. The woman could sing beautifully. God only knows what she would be singing today. A unique voice and a unique woman. RIP Cass.
@r6ada Actually she has talent. Listen to String Man, where she has the leads for a change. Sure she's not as good as Mama Cass (who is? :D ) but she's very talented too.
I read an article that there is some sort of mistake where Doherty made a early choird entrance - but the mistake was left in the song. Can some one pinpoint the part of the song where it is - if there is any at all in this version.
@YahkoKun Start of the 3rd chorus. John comes in early with "I saw her again". It sounds almost spoken (instead of singing). This is Michele's first time singing lead. Wow, this is the 1966 film created to promote the single release. Incredible find/save/share. THANKS.
How did they get that 4 part counterpoint, energy, bliss, excitement and aesthetic into one space.great vocals!! Having said this, there was a track...instrumental, on one of the albums called..frustration! If anyone has this could you please post it for me! Peace and love, John from australia

Michelle is so attractive in this! There's something about those skinny jeans and that long straight hair and her seductive motions!
Joe22c 9 months ago
Thanks for sharing this fantastic song ; perhaps their best ever....and that's saying something as i've never heard a bad record by them. Good lyrics too - a nice twist on the usual sentimental "boy loves girl" story.

Cass was the real star of the group and I think she knew it...She coulda had her pick among thousands of adoring male fans of this group...Some folks look at what a person can do instead of what they look like!

Yes, great harmonizing. Great band ! When it comes to music, I am VERY happy to be of my old age :)

I didn't get the thing with Denny, he sang great but I don't find him attractive.
snoopval 9 months ago
This is a great song, but suffers from a poor master audio mix, the instrumentals centered-channeled (mono) with the vocals split off to the l/r channels but under-volume. Digital remastering to bring out the vocals sounds better, but it's nice to hear the original too.
pbanta62 9 months ago
@pbanta62 Remember that this was recorded in late '65 or early '66, so the original analogue master is probably only four tracks. It's a complicated enough recording that there undoubtedly were several "bounce downs" to free up tracks, which has the side effect of collapsing everything that was bounced down to a mono signal. Obviously one set of vocals is hard left, one is hard right, and it sounds like they might be using two for the instrumentals. (cont)
almostfm 9 months ago
@pbanta62 Also, they were just starting to use stereo for rock and pop, and there was a lot of panning hard left/right to emphasize the "stereo" sound.
The vocals are much clearer in headphones, because they're solidly in one ear or the other.
almostfm 9 months ago
Loved this to bits ...but then the stories of their lives came to light...I can not separate the two....such a pity.
ppaulmorris 9 months ago
This should be played mandatorily in all schools to show how harmonies, melodies, musical score and overall arrangement make a great song - not profanity, sex, nudity and rubbish rhymes - the sooner hip hop or R&B or whatever it is called dies a slow death the better

DID U HEAR THE MISTAKE IN THIS SONG? LISTEN CAREFULLY..PICK IT UP
09bnunez 10 months ago
@09bnunez.......been living with that "mistake" since release in 66...it was purposely left in thus adding special character to an already unforgettable performance.

Anyone know "why" the film was made?
This is long before Rock Videos as we now know them!
dodgebury 11 months ago
@dodgebury I think there had to be some sort of shows or something that showed "music videos" even in the 60's because if you look around online there is produced video for almost every hit song back then even though that was the pre-MTV generation.

I love when Mama Cass does her little dance when she enters the store (the pony?). She was the real singing talent and I wish I could have met her out of all of them. Beautiful Beautiful woman!
mikegoons 1 year ago 18

Mama Cass was a large woman....the only thing larger than Cass was her talent and her voice. The woman could sing beautifully. God only knows what she would be singing today. A unique voice and a unique woman. RIP Cass.

shaundraivy 1 year ago
I read an article that there is some sort of mistake where Doherty made a early choird entrance - but the mistake was left in the song. Can some one pinpoint the part of the song where it is - if there is any at all in this version.
YahkoKun 1 year ago
@YahkoKun Start of the 3rd chorus. John comes in early with "I saw her again". It sounds almost spoken (instead of singing). This is Michele's first time singing lead. Wow, this is the 1966 film created to promote the single release. Incredible find/save/share. THANKS.
