Yes this line splits off the main line at Tyrone and goes north to Port Matilda and onwards........the main line follows the river east from Tyrone towards Spruce Creek
I am a steam fanatic and heavy equipment operator. I have driven tractor-trailers for 24 years. I don't understand why the engineer did not maintain more power as he came in because he had a hell of a time gtting her out.
When railroads have been given easements to run down street-centers there are terms to the agreement including a low permanent speed restriction... This keeps little kids, etc... from getting pancaked/cut in half...
two of the three guys in the engine are fam. one was the my grand father the other my father. wow! I remember chasing the K4 the day it left the shops in Altooona
@kd7tqn That's because the ashton and the pennsy whistles both sound the same minor chord...but in this vid, the whistle has that throaty/raspy sound that's uniquely pennsy.
You may be interested to know that over here in th U.K. a group of enthusiasts spent over 18 years raising the money to build a brand new (yes, brand new!) steam loco from scratch. It is an A1 Class Peppercorn Pacific and was finally completed last year. you can see footage of its first fare paying passenger run on Youtube at this link: watch?v=qkkARP7PVVc
It's actually not Steamtown that's the problem....they were just letting the Altoona Railroaders Museum work on the engine in their facilities. They never took any active role in helping to restore her, as far as I know.
i wonder why, i mean steamtown has 2 engines already running, and they take pride in fixing up their engines, but why can't they do the same for the Altoona guys?
Dont forget that steamtown is government run. If its not theirs then they wont work on it. I believe originally it was to be a "combined" effort. But the scope of the project changed somewhere. Im waitin on the #40 and the #3713.

What a beautiful, mournful whistle--tuned to a minor triad. Perfect for the gray, gloomy day. That sound inspired a thousand folk songs.

The PRR K4s is the official state steam locomotive of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Why is she being allowed to languish?
Send her to the New Hope & Ivyland for her rebuild!

Which locomotive pollutes the air more? A steam locomotive or a diesel locomotive?
superbeast94 2 years ago
I think a diesel locomotive. The coal is a natural material, the diesl no
