  • Great song. Great version, and who cares about the politics. I like gospel music, but god forbid I'd ever become anything but a confirmed atheist.

  • Think myself it is a bar in Rotterdam , not far from the port where the tankers berth .

  • Comment removed

  • i think it,s written about a bar in Hoorn.

  • @Dancer3Thunder Yep but thats what its all about!

  • fantastic song, sang with loads of passion really ove it well done

  • This is one of the sweetest songs I have ever heard. I can just picture a lively cafe filled with town/village folks having a drink and a laugh after a hard days work. Wonderful song.

  • Irish and Dutch, my arse, read your history.. fools..!

  • @gazamused

Have a look at the Irish flag and you'll see the Orange my friend. Geen Overgave!

  • @GaraGambini its not orange!its green ,white and gold mate.

  • @frankmelvin

Lol, lol, it should be gold as the truth is that the Orange community in the Republic is non existant, squeezed out after 1921 sadly.

  • @frankmelvin Article 7 Irish Contitution reads: The flag shall be Green, White and Orange.

Green for Eire, Orange for the Orange supporters and White for peace between them.

But who cares. It's the Fureys. I love this song.

  • @frankmelvin Green white and orange as per article 7 of the constitution.

  • Irish girl away to Amsterdam on Friday (:

  • I love this song, we zongen het gisteren nog met the fureys and davey arthur <3

  • I LOVE YOU GUYS ... GET YOURSELVES BACK OVER TO JERSEY IN THE CHANNEL ISLES AGAIN ....XXX

  • Very good sound, respect the letter and every human being regardless of your choice! Sweet Kisses in your heart!

  • feckin' brilliant, only the Furies

  • This song is one of the reasons we moved to Ireland. In Finnegans in Kenmare, heard it being sung by the son, bought the Fureys CD and here we are.... Always very special to us!

  • it sure is a good thing to forget about life now and then, the fureys did not write this song but by god they made it their own ,the man who wrote this song must have loved pubs as much as i do ,long live the fureys, terrific interpretation of this tune.

  • Blah, blah, balh - can't you all enjoy something beautiful without picking it apart....get a life - all of you!

  • It's a great Irish version of the Dutch song !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • lurn to spill ya bollix

  • Pierre Kartner, dutch songwriter, wrote this song in the seventies. It's NOT German or Irish or Russian or Chinese. About 250 different artists have sung it, ofcourse Kartner ís pleased with that and so is his bankaccount.

  • Its German, made famous in Holland. So many make the mistake its from holland

  • @alpquelle1 its dutch song wrote in 1975 by valder abraham and covered by many bands including my good friends the fureys and davey arthur. have had the pleasure to meet valder in holland.

  • Who cares where this song came from, what its about and what history is attached to it. It is a great song and The Fureys do a great job singing it.

  • The story I heard on a "First World War tour" of the "Low lands", Belgium Holland and France. Was that the "Red Rose Cafe" was a meeting place for Resistant Comrades of the First World War fighting for freedom. The exact location I forget but all were united in the fight! So does it matter?

  • Haha, Irish + Dutch = perfect match :D

  • @Ledaatje

LOL as an Northern Irishman who feels The Dam is is second home XX

  • gwan finbar and ballyer

  • The original (the dutch one) is better..

  • Anything finbar furey put's his voice to is unbeatable end of story !

  • You're wrong.

Furey's has a better voice, but the original from vader Abraham has a better flow... plus the fact that Furey simply stole the song.

This song doesnt even make sense. Why would Furey sing about some red cafe in Amsterdam? He's probably never even been there.

  • Finbar has been all over europe playing gig's and i would not be suprised if he has visited the het schippershuis in hoorn , anyway you should be over the moon that a man who is extremely talented as finbar chose to sing such a great song the way he has !

  • Plus the fact that Furey simply stole the song , who are you , vader Abraham's legal advisor ? if i was mr Abraham and i wrote such a perfect song like this i would be chuffed that other artist's approved of my work and liked it so much they wanted to sing it also , and i also would not approve of you tube poster's giving out about it !

  • @StlyDutch

of course they didn't steal it. Kartner wrote and translated the song in english. Daddy Abe gets all the money, fair and square... (komt er op neer dat hij gewoon z'n geld krijgt, niks aan het handje )

  • never knew that and i lived in alkmaar for years .jeysus

  • i love this song so much

  • First time ive heard this song in English.I'M more used to the original dutch version by Father Abraham.Fantastic.

  • Luv this song... The Fureys can take you out of the room and float you across the water with there music

  • Thanks for posting,

I loved to here this song, I have also the original dutch version. It's written by Pierre Kartner also know as Vader Abraham, Het kleine cafe aan de haven that's the original title.

  • lol stop fighting cant the Irish & Dutch get along??? A great Irish band singing a Great Dutch song Chill out lol its 50/50 here everyone wins

  • 25 beg of grass

  • your correct sis2,the word gay does not come into the song, its just some adolescent punk trying to be smart, gay as in happy i understand but i dont think its how Mr. Sparkes meant it.

  • I don't believe the word "gay" was even mentioned in this song! I hear the word "there"...not gay. I listened more than once to make sure. Even if the word "gay" were used, it would have meant "happy".

  • well well well Joe sparks, gay they are NOT,if thats your cup of tea then your welcome to it but dont drag the rest of the world with you,oh and by the way, learn to spell!!!!!!

  • wt do u mean "drag the rest of the world with u"???

    gimp...

  • Drag as in drag queen!!

Mr.Sparkes thinks its a place where gay people meet.Iknow that not all drag queens are gay but its usually associated.

Do you even know what a gimp is?

  • If you see this, I was actually told that this was where gay people meet, I didn't say anything other than what I was told. I am sure they are not gay, but I am not homophobic either I can assure you. The only spelling error I can see is the Furey's which I spelt with an 'ie' before !

(I am a Female, Jo short for Josephine )

  • Has a lovely echoey sound, lovely tune. If it is a place where gay people meet, well I guess they have to meet somewhere.

Beautiful song this, The Furies are first rate.

  • this is a FUCKING good irish song

  • Dutch song.

  • might be dutch, but if uve ever been in an irish country pub at closing time u must have heard it.

  • Aye its dutch but the fureys sing it properly

  • irish

  • Stukybuy

It is a Dutch song! One of the band members famously said we took the Dutch song and translated it from Hollish into Irish hehe...it is a Dutch song originally

  • The original lyrics were Dutch by "Vader Abraham" (real name Pierre Kartner) - Het Kleine cafe aan de Haven

  • down at the red rose cafe!
