Hi TJ, thanks for sharing this wonderful idea with us! As a saw player myself I face great difficulties in amping up the saw without feedback (I play in VERY noisy venues). Does it work as nicely without the guitar effects? In particularl, I am wondering if the amplification level is constant as the pitch is changed? In other words; does high tones get amplified as much as lower tones? Also, is it a standard piezo transducer that you modded to become a contact mic? Thanks in advance!
IF you like this, try: "Doc George at the 7th Annual NYC Sawfest" or something like that. I've got a Mussehl & Westpfall tenor singing saw w/ a humbucker on it- I used to also have a Barcus Berry Transducer (piezoelectric contact mike) but the Humbucker is much smoother and has a much wider range. I've been playing out since 2000, but just got the equipment to go online....
VERY NICE!! The use of amplification and electronics can be transformative of musical instruments - look at the guitar ! My hat's off to you, TJ - this is the saw's formal intrance to the 21st century. I already play the theremin, so I have everything but the contact microphone. Guess what store I'm headed for tomorrow? :)
I was skeptical at the beginning of this video, this is a crazy good idea, i though you were about to play it normaly then you just amazed me man, thanks.
Wow man. I was thinking about starting to play saw. And after seeing what you did with the mick and guitar rig and stuff... amazing. Thanks for the vid
That is so wicked! I've always wondered how to amplify a saw (I play the saw without amplification). How and where do you fit the contact mic? What sort of equipment do you need to get that sound?
Sorry to take so long to get back to you msawman. The contact mic is a piezo transducer from radio shack soldered to a 1/4" guitar jack. I placed the contact mic near the handle of the saw and just taped it on there to keep in in place. It then runs through 2 distortion pedals, reverb, delay, and into my amp.
