My uncle fought Against the Afrika korp and always spoke very highly of Rommel and the Afrika Korp. But then again they were real soldiers and not brainwashed elitists.

.The family had 2 boys and 5 sisters and food was scarce. He has told me some stories and unfortunately stuff is fuzzy for him, some of the things he believes do not make sense to me. Anyhow I do know when the Germans surrendered he was sent to a labor camp in Siberia, they worked at a lumber type camp.
He tells me horror stories of this camp and is very lucky to have survived it.A Russian nurse could tell he was very young and he spoke a few words Russian, she ended up putting his physical on the stack of papers that basically said the prisoner was to weak to work and close to death. She nursed him back with a broth type soup and he made it on a train back to Germany. He said he weighed around 90-100 lbs.His mother last seen him when he was 15 and now sees him at 21.
The Red cross helped him find his family and he speaks of the day he walked over the hill and his mother sees him.It was a horrible thing WWII and many casulties, my father was a child of 15 and told many stories, I always wondered why he was so strict when I was growing up.

I mean the 12. was a children's crusade, and the only experience amongst the ranks were the commanders and some army officers brought in to fill the gaps.
All that said, they certainly had the most hectic "trial by fire" of any other Panzerdivision
@TwistedGentleman But one could argue that those "children" at 17 had better military training both physically and mentally than most of their opposition. The 12th was predominantly made up of ex HJ members who were born in the year 1926. 7 or 8 years training in the Hitler Youth gave plenty of opportunity to learn well and truely inculcate basic military skills sets. With their eastern front veteran NCO and officers as role models, they were more than a "chidren's crusade".
