  • This is very beautiful. A little too fast for the song I think, but beautiful nonetheless.

  • I hate where they perform. I hate how you can hear the lights buzzing. They should do it somewhere else.

  • Tempo is much too fast, and it doesn't flow like a Whitacre piece should. Love the song, but your director shouldn't have made those decisions.

  • This song is freaking AMAZING. We are currently singing it in my A CAppella choir. The first day we got it we listened to it then spent the entire period analyzing it. I LOVE IT

  • I was in all-state last year and this year! pretty much my favorite moments from high school! <3

  • Hey Guys. I've wanted to post this since last Saturday but I haven't gotten the chance to do so. I won't be uploading any allstate videos for this year's festival since I won't be getting a CD on accounts that I didn't make it this year. Sorry =(

  • I'll try to post All-State stuff from this year.

  • Yes, please. Do that. Please. Seriously.

Don't split up Ove and Afternoon, lol. :D

  • I'm so sorry! I know how awful that feels.

  • i wasnt in the all-state choir but at West we sang this song along with 3 or 4 other All-state songs.

  • yay, this is nice...there's lots of Briar Cliff camp people on here..

  • Pretty sure O've is a BITCH. And this year I'm a Bass II so Prelude....I sing one note. The ENTIRE song. Look at your music and tell me if thats not irritating. I renamed it "Prelude to Insanity" I'm going to hate that song.

  • Ove' is like one my favs! I have to agree with you on the Prelude thing though.

  • @MidwestSingerDude No kidding dude!!!! I'm an Alto and I also have that one freaking note.... didn't make it this year :/ I was upset. I bawled. But '08 was freaking amazing!

  • no whitacre this year. :( makes my very sad. i would have loved to have sung with a lily in your hand or love joy peace (i think that's what it's called). but afternoon on a hill should be interesting - already working on it!

  • I know! I was very sad =( I wanted to do Water Night.

  • Yeah, sad. :(

Except Afternoon on a Hill is really, really pretty. It reminds me of something Whitacre would ride if he had the chance.

And Wie Lieblich is soooo beautiful! OMG, I love it so much.

AND Ov'e' Lass is going to be really cool with so many people. Lauridsen is a BAMF.

Not so big on Prelude or Let Everything That Hath Breath yet, but it was the same with Tres Cantos and Shout Glory two years ago and Careless last year.

I don't know what to think of Gloria yet. Love the ending, though.

  • Prelude has to be the most frustrating song on the face of this planet.

    Just saying. :)

But I really love the rest of them so far. I really like Gloria - I've found some awesome videos here on YT, one by Edison High School. They don't do percussion, though.

  • i would have to agree with you there! I can't wait till next year! im composing something that they're thinking of having the All-State choir sing, and it would be amazing to sing something i wrote with 599 other singers.

  • OH, btw, that piece is Hope, Faith, Life, Love, and I really wanted to sing it. :(

  • at least we have barnum.

  • Why are there videos from past All-State Choir performances, but there isn't for this year's!?!? Stupid!

But yeah I agree, this was my favorite piece that we sang!

  • Lux Arumque would be amazing for next year

  • Anyone else going to be real mad if there's no Whitacre music for All State this fall.

Imagine if band got to do Lux or something and we didn't get any. That would be infuriating.

I vote Water Night. Or hope, faith. Who's with me?

  • I would be insanely mad. Iowa Allstate 2007 (My freshman year) had no Whitacre and that was the year after they did Sleep so I was incredibly mad. But I would say, there is a good chance of doing another Whitacre. If any song, it would most likely be Water Night. Lux is more of a Christmas song and even though allstate is close enough to Xmas, I don't think it'd be the best choice to do. So, my thought it Water Night.

Music comes out in like a month! AHHHH!

  • The TTBB version of Lux would be awesome, too.

The only thing about Water Night is that it goes super low for the altos (low Eb).

Any of the Three Flower Songs would be good, too. I could see us doing Go, Lovely Rose or With a Lily in Your Hand. With a Lily might be a little on the difficult side, though.

In a perfect world, we would do Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine. How awesome would the flight be with 600 people?

    Or Her Sacred Spirit Soars...

  • But if you think about last year's concert, some of the alto's went super low in Suite de Lorca (El Grito) I think some of the alto II's could handle it.

And you're right, Leonardo would be incredible. Also think about When David Heard. Even though I know it's not a possibility since it's SO long, how cool would it be when we got to "My son" at the 10 minute mark? Pretty sure most of the choir would be in tears.

  • Who cares about the choir? I want the band and orchestra to be in tears.

But you're right, it would take up like half the show, lol.

Maybe the guys do Lux and the girls do She Weeps. That would be cool.

When is the music usually released?

  • I cry every time I hear that song

  • This Marriage is also a possibility.

  • it seems rushed....

  • this is so good, i tried out iowa all state choir this year too but i didn't make it =( i did get to practice this beautiful song a lot, though

  • Wow....completely wrong. Needs to be MUCH more tender than this.

  • It's tough to do really tender stuff with 600 people.

  • Eric Whitacre is my absolute favorite composer. We sang Sleep my freshman year, so I was overjoyed when I saw that we were singing A Boy and a Girl for this year!

  • i'm sorry but this was done completely wrong. it was too fast and loud throughout the whole thing. it's still a beautiful peace, and the choir did very well, but not in the way i've heard it and perfer it.

  • yeah. i totally agree. i performed this, and took a different approach. i like it a lot softer, and gentle :)

  • yeah, our chamber choir has performed it many times and i think it just sounds so much better when it's drawn out.

  • ach...it took us like two days to figure out the people DIE at the end! it was really sad! but i loved it

  • Beautiful performance of a beautiful song. Very rarely will you see an all state choir of this caliber.

  • i love this song!! it makes me tear up everytime i listen to is.

  • this song made me cry wen we sang it.

    this was my favorite song...:)

  • This was great as well. This was def. my favorite. This song is so gorgeous... Eric Whitacre is an incredible writer.

  • this was my favorite song too! i haven't listened to this piece before without actually being in a choir singing it and i can really hear all of our "shadow vowel" work. my choir director now makes us do all the kinesthetic things that belja made us do.

  • This is my favorite All State piece this year, too. I love the second verse.

  • not mine. i have heard this song five times by a full piece choir. when i tried out(and failed),and twice when i went to see my sister perform at Drake University

  • Hey! I was in this choir too!
