what can i buy in walmart or lowes or somewhere like that to put in the water for a deep water hydroponics system? FOR CLONES ONCE THEY COME OUT OF HUMIDITY DOME
Yes and No..In the past I always ran the pump 24/7 but recently I have been running it 15 minutes on 30 off with no real or perceived difference. Bottom line is its all about DO levels which are influenced by a variety of factors most notably water temperature. The cooler the water the greater the capacity of the water to retain gaseous oxygen. Unfortunately, clones root slightly better in a bath that a bit on the warm side (76-78F).
This temperature paradox also poses a secondary problem in that a warmer bath breeds anaerobic pathogenic bacteria. As the water temp increases the amount of dissolved O2 decreases therefore the environment is prime for a pathogenic bacterial explosion. Fortunately, we can combat the proliferation of bacteria with more oxygen! Hence the 24/7 operation. This solution however can also pose a problem if the air that your air pump is introducing is warmer than the bath water.

just asking but how would the air hose produce algea ? isn't it more the water hose that if clear shouldn't be exposed to light. in the process of making my first system.
Wouldnt all that water drown the roots?? how would you do a very big plant with lots of roots? no drowning?? would an ebb and flow work better for a big plant that im not cloning? good video man
@JazzNaySean Roots thrive in an oxygen rich water that is the heart of a DWC system lots of air stones. Wehave several videos showing this on our YT page growing many large plants.please check them out and let us know if you haveny questions via our website.
can you just slip a cube of your product into a raft itself and cut out the cost of netpot all together also what if you just poked holes in your air line and spiral several feet of it on the bottom of your container that hold the raft
@critter272000 Yes you can, take a look at our video titled "Homemade Hydroponics - How to make a hydroponic grow room" we show one of our DWC systems doing just that with our grow cubes. This will work for veg and for short term plants like lettuce. we have not tried this with our larger inserts, but it should work, but you have to be ready to deal with stability issues with larger plants. Tieing up will be a must. If you do try this, love to hear back from you with the results.
@Standinglightfox Thanks for the question. You need nothing different with a DWC system. Typicall nutrients all work well and because of the action in the water they are mixed in very well and probably stay better longer.
thank god for you cats i started a system based off the this video i built the exact same tote and got a 5 gallon bucket got everything cheap just like you guys said... i cant wait to get your growth media soon as i get some doe!!! shouts to sure to grow and mad love....
@mcdracoone thank you for the comment, never get tired of hearing things like this. That is why we made the videos. Love to hear back from you whne you get everything wired in.
Like so many other "modern" technologies like solar power and hybrid cars, hydroponics seems out of reach due to initial costs. I would like to thank you for not only presenting a how to in a clean and precise manner, but for also stepping up with a completely affordable option. Keep up the good work!
@tycobb48 Thank you for the comment. The hydro industry follows very few norms of conventional business. We felt the vidoes and the How To series gave us a good opening to go back to basics. We think the growers really get it, its the retailers and distributors that are out of touch with their customer base. they seem to be completely reactive and almost never proactive.
@robthethriller. thanks for the question. We make the Typhoon insert that is 9.75 Dia x 5.75 Deep. It's made for the net pot insert that sits on a 5 gallon bucket. STG is not a wicking media, but in DWC and like systems it works great as the water hits where the roots are, holds the water there and keeps it away from the top, so no algae. Hail mini cubes are also great for this if the typhoon is not the right size.
Great how-to video! All I can say is that even though that is a very basic hydroponics system, that can surely produce crops that are far valuable compared with soil-grown crops. Now, I am thinking of what other enhancements I can do with it. I am planning on building a similar system for basil and pepper plants, any suggestions?
@neogardener Thanks for the comment. Our best suggestion for newer growers is to get your system down cold, before moving on and making enhancements. See success, get good at one thing, then you will much better prepared to move on and make adjustments. Also trial a bit before you commit to a large crop.
@SureToGrowers Hello, thanks for the tips. I will definitely take note of them. I was a bit busy with other things lately that's why I have not started with the system yet although I have the materials ready. I will probably give it a go and build it later. I am just checking on your video again to see if I missed out anything. So far, my notes are great and I think I'm ready to grow basil. Wish me luck :)
Why does that guy on the left just make fun of himself like that, "I am am imbecile" So if you are mechanically declined, (raises hand) if the only thing you've seen is a bob the builder video, (raises hand again). WTF
@yaccowacco if you listen to the audio again it is to reduce the chances of algae growth. Any time you stop the flow of air the tubing inside the container will fill with water creating the chance of growing nasty stuff. Add the nutrients and it gets really tasty for algae.
@mangoodvid The media stays above the water, as the roots grow they evdentually will drop into the water. by maintaining good aireation the roots and plants will thrive.
@mangoodvid hydroponics - the roots are in nutrient-rich oxygenated water, nothing else. The foam they were displaying is their method of holding the plant upright with the roots in and the leaves out of the water.
A friend tried this! And like most of us, he knew nothing about hydroponics until he started!! Interesting part according to him was the adaptability of supplements from Advanced Nutrients with this system...As if the system was designed to work best with hydroponic nutrients from Advanced Nutrients!!!

@11crader. thanks for the post. No nutrients are needed for cloning, but a good clone jel is always recommended, all the stores carry them. Ones as good as the other.
I know a reason not to use STG....its expensive, and you have to replace it every grow....I'd rather wash dirty balls that can be reused...and dont' host an arm and a leg to purchase.
@Burgeezy Time is money and for many people the time and effort associated with hydroton is simply not worth the effort. based on your reply i am going to assume you have not tried STG. Most people feel they get a better grow with STG, use less nutrient and see less wear and tear on their systems. STG is also made in the US not Germany. Many Americans prefer to buy products that employ citiizens. People perceive value in different terms not always in dollars and cents. Food for thought.
@SureToGrowers I see your valid points. I'm not opposed to buying made in Germany products. It sure beats sending my money to China. Make a USA made hydro system to go with the STG products and now you'd have my interest in the name of made in the USA. Make something for a Waterfarm I'll try it and give my honest feedback. I'll be trying the STG clone cubes soon. I can't stand rockwool and looking to get into something to start my plants in. Maybe I'll convert :)
@Burgeezy nice to hear from you again. Appreciate you getting STG...We have heard from quite a few growers lately using our new Hail mini cubes with their waterfarm systems and loving the results. In fact just got a ton of snapfish pics from a guy just the other day, due to the content of the pics we can't post them, but the plants are huge and he swears by Hail. We have a promo for Hail on our website, please go on there and buy a bag, would love to hear what you think.
I really like to add organic Compost Tea to the hydroponic nutrients solution as an organic fertilizer. I get it at Daddypetes*com in the form of compost tea bags. Steep the tea 48 hrs then pour it in.
It adds healthy natural microbes and microorganisms back into the water and the aeration from the bubbles helps to sustain its ability to control various root diseases blights, and molds.
I used it in flower pot farming too, and had great results. Some diseased plants recovered nicely.

Okay after I made this system I also made homemade CO2 generator but do I put the co2 air line in the water with the bubbler or where should it go....
You said to use black air line instead of clear but you used a clear reservoir! You should use something that blocks the most amount of light possible!!

thank god for you cats i started a system based off the this video i built the exact same tote and got a 5 gallon bucket got everything cheap just like you guys said... i cant wait to get your growth media soon as i get some doe!!! shouts to sure to grow and mad love....

Like so many other "modern" technologies like solar power and hybrid cars, hydroponics seems out of reach due to initial costs. I would like to thank you for not only presenting a how to in a clean and precise manner, but for also stepping up with a completely affordable option. Keep up the good work!
tycobb48 1 year ago
@tycobb48 Thank you for the comment. The hydro industry follows very few norms of conventional business. We felt the vidoes and the How To series gave us a good opening to go back to basics. We think the growers really get it, its the retailers and distributors that are out of touch with their customer base. they seem to be completely reactive and almost never proactive.

@ChristianEvolution yeah, it will. and if you use hydroponics your bud will taste better because it doesn't get the taste of soil

What about , nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, and the micronutrients? Without those it won't grow.?..
Fanarin 1 year ago

I am planning on building a similar system for basil and pepper plants, any suggestions?
neogardener 1 year ago
@neogardener Thanks for the comment. Our best suggestion for newer growers is to get your system down cold, before moving on and making enhancements. See success, get good at one thing, then you will much better prepared to move on and make adjustments. Also trial a bit before you commit to a large crop.
SureToGrowers 1 year ago
@SureToGrowers Hello, thanks for the tips. I will definitely take note of them. I was a bit busy with other things lately that's why I have not started with the system yet although I have the materials ready. I will probably give it a go and build it later. I am just checking on your video again to see if I missed out anything. So far, my notes are great and I think I'm ready to grow basil. Wish me luck :)

y does the air hose have to be black since all thats goin throught it is AIR!!
yaccowacco 1 year ago
@yaccowacco if you listen to the audio again it is to reduce the chances of algae growth. Any time you stop the flow of air the tubing inside the container will fill with water creating the chance of growing nasty stuff. Add the nutrients and it gets really tasty for algae.
solath 1 year ago
i dont understand... do the roots just grow in the water, or do u put a medium submerged in the water for the roots to grow in.
mangoodvid 1 year ago
@mangoodvid The media stays above the water, as the roots grow they evdentually will drop into the water. by maintaining good aireation the roots and plants will thrive.
SureToGrowers 1 year ago
@mangoodvid they grow directly in the water but a bubbler keeps it aeriated so that the roots get oxygen. and the grow medium is just in the pots.
yaccowacco 1 year ago
@mangoodvid hydroponics - the roots are in nutrient-rich oxygenated water, nothing else. The foam they were displaying is their method of holding the plant upright with the roots in and the leaves out of the water.

A friend tried this! And like most of us, he knew nothing about hydroponics until he started!! Interesting part according to him was the adaptability of supplements from Advanced Nutrients with this system...As if the system was designed to work best with hydroponic nutrients from Advanced Nutrients!!!

Do you use any nutrients for growing clones?
11crader 1 year ago
@11crader. thanks for the post. No nutrients are needed for cloning, but a good clone jel is always recommended, all the stores carry them. Ones as good as the other.
SureToGrowers 1 year ago
I know a reason not to use STG....its expensive, and you have to replace it every grow....I'd rather wash dirty balls that can be reused...and dont' host an arm and a leg to purchase.
Burgeezy 1 year ago
@Burgeezy Time is money and for many people the time and effort associated with hydroton is simply not worth the effort. based on your reply i am going to assume you have not tried STG. Most people feel they get a better grow with STG, use less nutrient and see less wear and tear on their systems. STG is also made in the US not Germany. Many Americans prefer to buy products that employ citiizens. People perceive value in different terms not always in dollars and cents. Food for thought.
SureToGrowers 1 year ago
@SureToGrowers I see your valid points. I'm not opposed to buying made in Germany products. It sure beats sending my money to China. Make a USA made hydro system to go with the STG products and now you'd have my interest in the name of made in the USA. Make something for a Waterfarm I'll try it and give my honest feedback. I'll be trying the STG clone cubes soon. I can't stand rockwool and looking to get into something to start my plants in. Maybe I'll convert :)
Burgeezy 1 year ago
