  • Did Russia officially appologize for all the attrocities that they committed against the Latvian, Estonian, Lithuanian, Polish, Ukrainian, Finnish, and other people they are neighbors with? Did they or do they plan on paying financial restitution to the tune of billions of dollars? Do they plan on withdrawing their "citizens" planted WITHOUT PERMISSION OF THE INVADED NATIONS back to their sweet Russia? The fact that they even dare asking for Russian to be recognized shows their state of "mind"

  • I understand their language but speaking is little bit harder, so i wanted to learn better russian, but after someone asked me"How will you survive in ENGLAND if you dont speak russian" and overhearing how they are wishing for Soviet union to come back and retake these independent countries so that they could dominate again, made me reconsider that idea.

Im not saying that all russians are evil, most of them are very nice people. But those "evil occupants" gives us many reasons to deslike them

  • No one is denying them to speak in their language, russian isn't banned. Only thing we ask from them is to respect and know the language of the country they live in. Main reason why they are doing this, is becouse its too hard for them to learn that language, so they are not trying to learn it but making russian as official language so that they woudn't need to.

  • Only nazi-oriented narrow minded people who's religion is to oppres russian speakers are against second language. They hate any different view and want to exterminate opponents who doesn't speak Latvian - that is who they are.

  • This is one of the problems with Eastern Europe. Too many crazy nationalists. Plenty of hatred and feelings of ethnic superiority.

  • Latvia wants Russian as an official language, nazi criminals don't!

  • @1vadimzzz Latvia dosent want Russian as an official language, only people who's minds still live in the Soviet Union want that.

  • Occupant launguage will never be the offical language in Latvia!

  • @MrLaurisz

I guess, under occupant you meant yourself..

the one who made people of latvia devided by their ethnic origin, usurped the government in order to impose power of foreign masters.

you truly is occupant - not those people who demanding Democracy in Equality, voted for it independence, fought and died in last war for its freedom.

  • Can you believe it,what a shame! I´m sick of it! So don´t wonder if there are people who hate russians...

  • LATVIA doesn´t want russian as an official language!!! Russian minority wants it, not LATVIANS !!! LATVIA is the only country in the world where we- LATVIANS can speak latvian and now those russians who aren´t loyal to Latvia and who don´t want to integrate into the latvian society, to learn the language (they´ve born here and lived here all their life!) and their behavior is anti-latvian, wants russian as an official language!

  • I am from Lithuania, and when I saw the title of the video I couldn't believe it. We, Latvians and Lithuanians, share one of the oldest Indo-European language which we should be proud of and save it for the future generations.

  • @MalynaLT It's so true! I wish these two countries are bigger and stronger, and our languages are more popular!

  • The only thing missing from this news item is any sense of truth or reality.

  • well that is so not true

  • No, title - SOOO not true. Latvia's russians want russian as an official language, not LATVIANS.

  • Euronews just went full retard.

  • Comment removed

  • Not Latvia, not latvians not russians... Linderman wants, but he is jew

  • "Latvia" doesnt want Russian language as an official language .

RUSSIANS from Latvia want that . And that's all . Not Latvia / Latvians . Only Russians .

  • @TheZakjiS 100 % agree. the title is just ridiculous.

  • @TheZakjiS

    this is a lie.

there were latvians voted for Equality of russian population in latvia.

By the way, goverment of lativa Ignoring the will and opinion of latvian Citizens, in favor of One Ethnic Group - everybody knows how this is called in UN documents..

what Citizens of Latvia are voting for - is A Fare and Equal REPRESENTATION.

today, it is National Dictatorship - not a Democracy.

  • @TheZakjiS

    You are bloody Racist!

    Latvian CITIZENS wants Russian language.

What is in Latvia today, is Naci Dictatorship.

    it is NOT a Democracy.

  • @geronimo4372 Anyone who is for Russian as a second language is against Latvians, that is pure and simple, cause if this referendum actually passes then the Latvian language will stop existing in a matter of years, so if you support that then you aren't worthy of calling yourself a Latvian citizen.

  • @ugaboj Swedish is also Finland's official language, but Finnish didn't stop existing. Russian being official language doesn't mean everyone should learn it, I only hope that Russian shouldn't be banned in public, such as guideboard, shops, as a foreign torist I was in Riga last year and I know some Russian but there was no guideboard in Russian and really have had some trouble...

  • @NurjanArystanov There is no need for it to be an official language, a large amount of latvians already speak russian, and there are only about 2 million latvians left in the entire world, and if the only place in the world where the Latvian language is still barely preserved will become a place where Latvian isnt needed anymore then the Latvian language is sure to become extinct in a decade. And tourism languages have nothing to do with making them official in Latvia

  • @NurjanArystanov 1.5 million Latvian native speakers, 5 million Finnish native speakers. Can you see difference?

This time language has become a political tool. BTW granting the Russian language the status of the second state language is the denial of Latvia as a national state and it contradicts the basics of the Satversme (Constitution).

  • @dogmaryjane Ok, Russian language shouldn't be offical, in order to keep Latvia national state, I agree. But I've heard that even Russians thamselves can't learn Russian language in Latvia, or Russian has been restricted, is it ture? I didn't investigate I just heard about that.

  • @NurjanArystanov Did you mean minority schools? In all other countries people have to know the official language and in Latvia there is no taboo to study and use other language.

  • @dogmaryjane Yes, minority schools. I read a news that in minority schools children have only 4 hours' Russian course every week and all other subjects, maths, physics, arts are taught in Latvian, is it really like that?

  • @TheZakjiS

    yeah right..

it was not like Americans wanted freedom - NEGROES Wanted..

u see niggers are not americans, right?

so russians are like those niggers who wanted freedom when Whites did not...

yeah... we All see roots of thinking for assholes like you.

these are People in first place.

these are Citizens of latvia in second place.

oh yeah, russinas were Living in this land for centuries - unlike negroes brought to america as slaves by your masters in these days..

  • ...something that would be true. See? Even that "latvian" in EU ( Tatian Zhdaonk) speaks russian, and she dont know in english, what she should know, while working job like that. Where are we going world? This will be and occupation. Latvians are a bit above 1.7million, and our language will die if russian language will be as an official language.

  • OMFG, IT IS MISTAKE. WE DONT WANNA RUSSIAN LANGUAGE AS OFFICIAL LANGUAGE. IT ISNT TRUE, WE ARE TRYING TO AVOID OF IT.

Dammit, i'll make suicide, if russian language will become as official language. We are against it, we dont want it. Already, 60% of russians aint speaking latvian, and thats pain in the ass, when u, 16y old teen try say them something in your native language, and old russians, 75y+, is looking at you like are dog.

I'll ask to change name of the video to something else...

  • Латишські стрільці були найжорстокішим підрозділом у ЧК. Виконували найважливіші розстрільні операції. Вони були просто заробітчанами.

  • are they orthodox or catholic?

  • @capucchan8 Why does this matter?

  • @CyrillKR just curious

  • It is true that with the resent past cold war, such an increase of self cultural loss would be completly unexpected. I love Russia as an ally and all, but to see fellow Europeans give up their culture or language is not expected.

Now that I think about it, this would be a great senario for another video game.

  • @PierreRMB I think it's a little risky to say this is Latvians loosing their identity; by risky I mean... the alternative is to say that Russians in Latvia are fighting for their rights, and to turn that around and say it's russian harming Latvia is just crass

  • @bbphnix This is true. Even if it is sort of funny to see such a big country asking for rights in such a small country right next to them. But I agree.

    My appology to all Russians.

  • strange youd think Latviaian would be

  • No we dont!!!

  • @DarkMassFabrikator Does it really matter?

  • @DarkMassFabrikator Why not? In Canada, there are two official languages. English (majority) and French. In Canada 22% of citizens have French as their first language. In Latvia, 37% of citizens have Russian as their first language.

  • @DimmedDiamond

that is because Canada is a colony and that is why the people moved there in the first place, but European nations are a cultural basket on their own and its really hard for smaller cultures to survive with their languages, that is why russia should back off, another reason is the history of these two nations, millions of Latvians died fighting the russians andin my opinion it would be desrespectful to make russian official !

  • @MrYkrainets yes, but whatever crimes russia did, should it be innocent russians in latvia made to pay for those crimes? is anyone ever ally at fault for what an ancestor does?

  • @bbphnix

i understand that no one is really at fault and i dont know the exact situation in Latvia but in Ukraine the russians are calling people heroes even though these "heroes" killed of millions of Ukrainians and that is why i have a problem with them but also those russians in Latvia arent innocent since most of them (families) were sent out from russia in order to hold the cccp together

  • @MrYkrainets yeah, the USSR sucks ass; fuck'em

  • I myself am not a Latvian and i understand that there is a huge population of russians in Latvia but still. I am Ukrainian and i have been to many nations and have lived in Germany Poland and USA and of course Ukraine, I love my country and i hate the fact that russians have been trying to destroy our culture for as long as history goes back even though we were the parent country also i hate the fact that over 20 million Ukrainians have died in the last century all because of russian hands

  • @MrYkrainets

Actually the comparation to Canada is valid in this way that Latvia was kind of a "colony", which is a one of the reasons for its actual demographics, but the difference is that Latvians are natives, obviously. I don`t think that`s a good idea to take a "revange" and send these people back, but granting thier language an equal status is too much.

Seems that the election of a Russian party wasn`t a good idea, but it`s the Latvians choice, thier country.

  • @DarkMassFabrikator I hope it'll not become an official state language! Otherwise, Russians from all the ex-USSR countries will want Russian as an official language! It'll be a chain process!

  • @SelenityLuz

They already have it in the central Asian puppet states and Belarus, actually it`s the main language there. Not sure about the other USSR errr... CIS states.

  • @MaximusProteus Indeed! Belarusian and Russian are the official languages there! But, on one hand, the political regime is subordinated to Russia. At least it was when Russian was named official language. Local people are forgetting their native language already, as speaking Russian becomes "fancier". On another hand, Latvia doesn't seem to have a dictatorship and is not subordinated to the Russian Federation.

  • @SelenityLuz It`s a bit a myth the obedience of Lukashenko to Moscow, but they`re dependent obviously. I guess that`s the reason of a late developement of a national language and the policy of Moscow since XIXc that 70% people speaks Russian there. It`s not some "fancy" fashion. Don`t forget that Latvia shares most of that history, it`s not just a matter of a current goverment, which is btw. made by a... Russian party.

  • @MaximusProteus My friend from Belarus says that only 15% of population speaks Belarusian properly! Even though, I do hope it'll not become an official language in Latvia!

  • @SelenityLuz Yes, from what i know about 15-17%, which is kinda sad. In Latvia there`re about 37% native Russian speakers, which is a serious number, but i`m not sure if that language should be official in the whole state, in the parts they`re majority... why not. Anyway that`s for the Latvians to decide, but i guess they`ll regret electing that goverment.
