Mine is the older one and was made in the USA, I love it. I am a welder by trade and it gets a real work out, better then an 80 dollar leatherman as a wire cutter and the blade locks are wonderful. I have had mine for over 5 years of heavy everyday use.
another BIG plus, that i'm not sure was mentioned here, is that the 2 main blades have thumb studs for single handed deployment. just picked it up today. by far the best multi-tool under $30.
nice review and demonstrations! i was gonna pick one up the other day, but for some reason, i got the vibe that it was non-locking. glad i saw this. thx!
@timmietijd Love ignorant comments like this..News flash, 90% of the things you own are made in China. Everything our country sells is made somewhere in Asia, so don't be so prideful.
Thorough review. I wasn't a fan of mine and returned it. The bad thing about Gerber is a lot of the components are now made in China and it shows in the quality. I got a $10 tool for $40. It doesn't close evenly, can opener wasn't ground correctly, wire cutters are useless, and there's a lot of slop in the entire tool. The case also wouldn't stay closed. It's not much better than the $10 Chinese tool I got at a flea market. You surely get what you pay for and these days it's not much.
Got one of these. Gave it to my wife to keep in her glovebox. I currently carry a Leatherman Blast. I prefer the blast, as it has a file, and better plier heads. But the spring loaded head of the Suspension is cool. And the accessability of the tools from the outside is nice too. I prefer the longer hollowground 420HC knife blade of the Blast over the two sheepsfoot blades of the suspension. And the fact that Leatherman is Made in America. It all comes down to personal preference though
I'm thinking about getting one of these. Is the G.Suspension pretty much guaranteed to be made in the USA? was thinking about getting one on off the bay. I bought a Gerber saw once that was made in China, was a real POS, lasted about an hour before the plastic lock gave out.
I just got it as an enlistment gift, I'm used to Leatherman Blast so the lock system felt a little awkward at first but when you get used to it it's fairly comfortable.
I have owned a Gerber Shortcut for a couple years carried every day and used frequently. Last night I picked up a Gerber suspension based on my experience with the shortcut and other Gerber knives, quality control has gone WAY DOWN. My previous Gerber knives all came razor sharp, the two blades on the suspension are extremely dull, the can opener and scissors have no edge at all (and by that I mean flat). My opinion of Gerber just followed Buck right down the drain.
i have the same tool and its done ok for my needs but the very tip of the blade broke and i had to have mine replaced because i was tightening a nut and ther pliers broke at the joint, the only other issue is tht they need a better sheath, i carried mine horizontally on my belt and one of the loops broke
Gerber was legendary before Fiskars bought it in 1987. Fiskars shifted the focus to low end tools made abroad. It's basically impossible to manufacture a multitool like the Suspension in the US and sell it for $25. I have no problem with imported tools, as long as they're not represented as US made.
@sootch00 where did u buy it because there are some china made ones that arent as good as the taiwanese ones. gerber changed production so theyre not as sharp, like yoggers56 said
Cabela's has this for $19.99 right now online - that's 50% off. Shows a backorder online, but the Wisconsin store has tons of them in stock. Thanks Sootch!
I like this type of review with little demonstrations of the tools rather than simply talking about it,wish there were more reviews like this.Helped me decide to go get one of these myself and for the most part it's been pretty good. However I had to send the tool back to Gerber because the washers on the tool popped out occasionally whenever I opened and closed a tool.Anyone else have this problem?
I just got one myself, and it was what I would consider utility sharp, but it wasn't how I like it. It looked and felt like the ground the bevel for the edge and didn't refine the edge at all. It was rough and unfinished. It was done well enough to where it took very little to touch it up and hone the blade to where it is shaving sharp so for $30 it's no big deal. I also had to remove the bur on back of the serrated edge. Thanks for the vid, it helped me decide to get one and so far I love it!
sootch00, excellent review if the Gerber suspension. It is indeed an excellent multi-tool. I have given it as a gift to several relatives and friends. Everyone loves it. People get the "cheap ones" and are disappointed. This knife is a terrific value and just plain works. Great stuff sootch. Keep up the good work. TNP for life.
hey whats up weaponfreak6244 here i have the same mulit tool that is the best one i got mine last cristmas by my uncle and i really use it alot and that is the best multi tool i have ever used i really enjoy it
I bought one of these on after Christmas clearance at my local Target a couple years ago in the low $20's. It works great, has been my only EDC multi tool since then. I miss my Leatherman Charge TI (Lost it). With this tool, even if I loose it, I won't be out much money. I LOVE the horizontal carry on the sheath. I often wear an over size shirt to carry concealed, the horizontal carry means I don't have to lift my shirt as high to get the multi tool out. So less risk of showing my gun.
Sootch, great review. I've owned two of these things (dropped the first one in the lake) and have edc'd them for 2 years. As long as you keep them oiled the springs will be fine. MY biggest issue is the sheath. After awhile I noticed while trying to deploy it from the sheath the little switches that lock the blades in place would snag on the sheath, causing me to have to use two hands to jiggle it loose. Also tearing the sheath up....I'm trying to find a new sheath for it...possibly Maxpedition?
I know guys and gals who look up this video will be looking for a high value multi-tool. I was one of them not too long ago. Good to know it lives up to my expectations. Another great value is a Lowe's brand (AKA Kobalt) multi-tool. For $15 it's also spring loaded, and it's completely user serviceable. I only wish it had the tools available from the closed position. But for the price I paid, I really can't complain. Great review sootch!
Ive had one of these for a year. I much prefer the Leatherman Blast I picked up recently, it just feels higher quality, and it isnt too pricey either.
there is an older model called the METHOD, which has the same tool and lock design. its bascially exactly the same minus the scales. i have had it for over 5 years now. it has never failed me. and i have beat the SHIT out of it. i mean...totally thrashed it. the finish hasnt even taken a beating really. and its more comfortable than most of the budget leathermans. the spring loaded action is awesome aswell. definitely worth the money.
The USCG issued one to me. Good thing cuz it has save my life twice. once after sliding off the road in a snow storm in Michigan and another time on board the CGC Mackinaw (wagb83) after having my glove and sleeve get caught on a burr from a steel mooring cable. Still have it, still trust it, still use it. Its a great tool!
@Dave54600 yes m8 any blade that locks is illegal, I have a gerber knife 2 inch blade i carnt carry that, after i bought it found out it locks I ended up buying a gerber clutch as the blade does not lock
I have owned one for a year and love it. I will give you one word of advice. Oil the spring inside the tool! Mine rusted and now the blades are a real pain to get out. It is still functional but something to be aware of.
Good review. Editing used to great effect (shows how the tools work). Excellent that you named competitors, wish you would have said which multi-tools you currently own this is similar to and why you prefer Gerber (or not). These are intelligent reviews made for the common man. Wish you also told us about the notch on the scissors - it's a tool too! THANKS!!! :o)
Thanks for an excellent review! A nice multi-tool at an affordable price. Thanks to this video, I just ordered one - $30 & change from Amazon... Free shipping. Please keep the fun, informative videos coming!
Sootch, I always loved your vids. Still do.......But with all do respect, you seem to be trying to go a different direction. IE Over-Extending yourself.(youtube Superstar) I love you. Nutinfancy is a dueche' (I hope I spelled it right never used one)). I know and understand you are good man. Just a simple observation. Oh yea and a Opinion. Your shooting vids might not help pay the bills, BUT they were a whole lot more entertaining. PS your better than Nutin'.....
One huge problem with this tool, when using the pliers, the handles are too far apart. Btw, try the can openner, it really sucks. The rest of the tool is good for the money. BTW I don't think this tool is not made in the US, most of what Gerber makes is made in China not their Portland OR site. I hate the Gerber never tells you what steel they use. Basically, this is the first vid you made where I did not agree :) but 1 out of 134 ain't bad!!! Still like and $ love :)
This has been my "range bag" multitool for years and has never let me (or my friends) down. BTW, you can get the optional socket set that goes with this for about $15 shipped from amazon or ebay. Just be aware that they fit a little loose, but are still quite functional. Also, the socket set comes with a new carry case. Unfortunately, it won't fit both the suspension & the socket set at the same time. Silly, but hey it's cheap.
you're the man sootch! i bought this for my friend last christmas. he's not a mt person, but he loves it. i use it sometimes to adjust my longboard trucks when we're skateboarding down the soapbox track.
Bought some of these a couple of years ago. There are a couple of issues. The scissors on two have had the spring "jump the groove," making them not open automatically. Cutting is therefore a pain.
The saw is pretty short, but the teeth are very aggressive and work well.
Put paracord though the lanyard, & the scissors rub against it, eventually wearing into the cord.
We are satisfied with the overall feel and quality of the various components especially for only $25 / each.
I bought 1 about 1 & 1/2 yrs ago & it's a decent buy for the money. The only things I don't like about it are that it's a little heavy and a little bulky for an edc in my opinion. I also had to reinforce the stitching on the sheath after only a few months of use and of course, the least desirable factor is that it's made in China! I switched back to my Leatherman for every day use but I still keep this one pretty handy. It does have a decent assortment of very functional and practical tools.
hey sootch00. this "new style of production" vid that you made is much better. eg. showing all the features of the tool. and a better camera. your really taking it to the next level. your awesome!
I returned my gerber as soon as I found that the knives, saw etc are too small. Also the thumb studs is poorly made. I bought a $15 kobalt multi tool at lowes instead.
Good choice sootch,I've had mine for over 2 years now,it's been on several jobs with me and it was even ran over by a tractor once but it's still holding up good.
I bought 2 of these at Christmas for $20 a piece and use 1 of them at work. It gets fairly heavy use almost daily. The only thing is, one of them came with a sheath that was slightly smaller and the locks caught up on it all the time. The pliers have locked up on me once, but every mt I have owned has done that. My reg blade came very sharp from the factory and still doesn't need any work. With Kershaw and Leatherman also being made in the Portland area I have no problem buying local lol.
Great review. I purchased one of these about 6 months ago and love it. A little big for edc for myself, so I have switched out with a leatherman juice. But, I still use this camping and keep it with that gear. It would be my favorite if it wasn't for the size. Those spring loaded pliers are the best. Thanks for the great vids sootch, and take care.
Your videos are the best Sootch00! You are a good guy. I am afraid to go to the beach these days due to oil poisoning. How about a video on the Swiss K-31 rifle?
I bought a bunch of these as gifts this past Christmas....Academy had them for 30.oo and they came with a matching Gerber knife.....Im happy with mine.
@BlackHeartModer Yes, this is my first video with the new camera and it's a world of difference. Unfortunately, I was looking at the preview screen instead of into the camera. Lol! Thanks~
I have this knife too and i have no issues with it

Gerber may be a Portland company, but............the box says:
"PLIERS MADE IN TAIWAN
HANDLES, TOOLS & SHEATH MADE IN CHINA"

Sootch, I always loved your vids. Still do.......But with all do respect, you seem to be trying to go a different direction. IE Over-Extending yourself.(youtube Superstar) I love you. Nutinfancy is a dueche' (I hope I spelled it right never used one)). I know and understand you are good man. Just a simple observation. Oh yea and a Opinion. Your shooting vids might not help pay the bills, BUT they were a whole lot more entertaining. PS your better than Nutin'.....

NICE!!! I bought this tool a month ago and it's been great. I bought it from Cabelas when they had it on sale for $25 I believe.

Cool review, I like the locks, I can't even count how many time I have cut myself really deep because my knife closed on me.
And the blade sure looked sharp enough to skin a squirrel, or field dress a deer.

Having the open design on the handles, do you feel it collects more debris versus the closed handles. Thanks for all the great vids.

you're the man sootch! i bought this for my friend last christmas. he's not a mt person, but he loves it. i use it sometimes to adjust my longboard trucks when we're skateboarding down the soapbox track.
