Cui: I first started learning the trumpet when I was 14. Because my father was a part-time trumpeteer in the army band at the time. I joined a music and dance performance group in 1981 in Beijing, which later became the Beijing Symphonic Orchestra. Starting from '87 I left(?)... *Inaudible*
Second segment:
Cui: I feel that using a purely musical combination approach, it (the fusion of western music and Chinese music) is too formulaic and restrictive.
Cui: Like [learning] a technique, the fusion is easily accomplished. I think a lot of people in China are (making music) this way. For example, some Chinese musicians combine the classical Chinese Beijing Opera with western music and western arrangements. But the resulting musical product is empty and lacks meaning. It's too commercialized. I believe a true combination (of Chinese and Western music) should be done through the merging of culture.
Younger Chinese people are increasingly more aware of the west, just as younger western people become more aware of China. The result is cultural understanding and mutual influence. I believe it's the natural way When music comes together in this manner (through cultural understanding). A true musical fusion occurs when the thought process, and, in turn, the content fuse together, not simply the form. Therefore, even if two people both play the electric guitar... * cuts off *
Dude, you're definitely right. CuiJian is the originatior of Chinese rock! He's great. Currently, a lotta awesome musicans and bands in China, e.g 谢天笑, 许巍,扭曲的机器, 痛苦的信仰,超载! You can listen to them~
@tonyweier maybe because the Japanese can appreciate the Chinese rock star better than China, you know China banned him from performing for several years and censored the lyrics to one of his songs. It's a good thing the Japanese were thoughtful enough to document his Berlin tour. If you really like Cui Jian, be thankful.
Very interesting audio & visual treat! I remember seeing an article in Chinese World Journal like more than 10 years ago about these music artists from China doing a big show in Germany, and saw a photo of Tang Dynasty band members standing on snow covered ground, apparently in Germany. I guess this was a Japanese production, since the video is presented with Japanese subtitles; does anybody know where I can find an original DVD issue?
If there is any shame in this, it is that it came too late...Cui Jian more than earned his place in the annals of Chinese rock and roll, but why did it have to happen ten or fifteen years too late (for western observers)?
There is a serious time lag in the transmission of Chinese contemporary culture to the west. Always we are are a decade or so behind, and I partly blame myself for this.
Tanks for posting - that was a good show. The concert was part of the first ever China avant-garde art&music show at the House of World Cultures, Berlin. The bands went on to tour several cities in both the former eastern part and the western part of a fairly recently reunited Germany (historically seen). During the tour the bands shared the stage with some other German bands(east & west) and also played some songs together,it was a true exchange and a fantastic happening, rare then.
Sound like they have been listening to more than the usual rock music from the west. Interesting that some of my fave rock (Gong, Yes, Magma, Rush, 5UUs.....etc) bands are influenced by Eastern music. Thanks for posting.
he's right. you guys should know a lil bit history because back then our government wasn't too happy about cui's music. have you seen the chinese version of this concert? i haven't.
Just because the government wasn't happy, their music becomes really socially rebellious, rather than quickly commercialized (like the Western rock) and lost its connection with their people

Hello
It's a French production delivered to ARTE TV and then distributed abroad (Japanese version).
I was the executive producer and "contents" manager.
