English schools were very similar to this with corporal punishment in the fifties and sixties, the European Union outlawed it when we joined the Common Market. Of course Baseball Bats were not used at the time. It was the strap, leather soled slipper or the cane. My own children find this practise quite alien but it was the standard when I was at school. You behaved or you paid the price.
