I think the auto industry is moving (has moved) faster than you think (thought). GM has been making high quality and/or well-executed cars for about 10 years, not to mention being lean and highly globalized for the past 5 years.
Time will tell how good GM, Kia, Toyota, or anyone is. But if you look at their direction right now, and not rely on decade old opinions, you can extrapolate.

I can't understand why our economy has to be so dependent on selling cars. Most Americans know we are destroying our atmosphere by their emissions, and yet they want to sell more?

The privatization of the military actually started under Clinton - and that helped him reduce the defense budget in the post Berlin-wall era. It didn't seem to bother liberals so much back when Clinton used the rendition and Haliburton to manage security and logistics (after all, he did it all in the name of freedom and humanity - why bother? who cares about the law or principle?) . Haliburton did quite well - its stock price more than doubled and liberals conveniently turned a blind eye.
Obama says he and his administration will not be making company decisions... guess what the same day as Obama takes over GM he says the company headquarters will stay in Detroit. He is making a decision the first day even though he says he will not do that. Everything about GM will now be based on what the government wants and NOT on what is best for GM. I think the auto industry is moving (has moved) faster than you think (thought). GM has been making high quality and/or well-executed cars for about 10 years, not to mention being lean and highly globalized for the past 5 years.
Time will tell how good GM, Kia, Toyota, or anyone is. But if you look at their direction right now, and not rely on decade old opinions, you can extrapolate.

Obama didn't destroy GM. GM destroyed itself by refusing to change itself back in 200. GM management refused to give up SUV and big trucks which were the cash cow of the 90s but didn't realize the SUV popularity faded after the 2000.

The privatization of the military actually started under Clinton - and that helped him reduce the defense budget in the post Berlin-wall era. It didn't seem to bother liberals so much back when Clinton used the rendition and Haliburton to manage security and logistics (after all, he did it all in the name of freedom and humanity - why bother? who cares about the law or principle?) . Haliburton did quite well - its stock price more than doubled and liberals conveniently turned a blind eye.

Congress and the Federal Reserve created it and now WE should sacrifice and give them more money to fix it. We own 60% of GM because they have unsusstainable debt. yet, Obama and Congress passed legislation that will put our children 10 TRILLION DOLLARS IN UNSUSTAINABLE DEBT THAT CAN NEVER BE PAID. Oh, AND LET'S NOT FORGET THE cost of Universal Health Care ! THAT'S STILL TO COME.

First of all...GM went to the federal govt....It was a republican administration that gave them a loan that took a stake in GM in the first place...stop attacking liberals for this...you are obviously not aware that the govt. can give loans just as a bank can. When the gov. owns the majority of shares...then the taxpayer gets to make a few decisions until the shares have been privatized again...Ford is doing just fine because of good management. Don't pretend that Obama wanted this...

The better alternative is subjective...Obama doesn't think the better alternative is to let them go kapoom...neither do I. I didn't say that what Bush did was "wrong" I said he started it...which destroys the argument that this is "liberal behavior"...people do what they think is right and Obama is doing a good thing by not letting the tens of thousands of GM employees drop with the company. GM will be privatized again. This is a short term solution for what is hopefully a short term problem.

Bush is the most liberal presidents in the last 30 years. Actually I think only Carter, LBJ, FDR are more liberal than Bush. He almost upstaged Carter and LBJ in education (by doubling the size of DoE) and the war mongering (LBJ still holds the record with 60+K dead soldiers). I don't understand. Why is the government even involved w/ this restructuring? Why has the government become a private bank? GM's problems have NOTHING TO DO with the federal government. They screwed up. They should ask the banking industry for loans. If they can't get loans...bye, bye GM. Sorry, but that's what happens when you don't make cars that people want to buy.
