With respect all you are doing is teaching flash techniques with no real application in the real world. Why on earth would you teach something that deliberately takes you to the ground if you are training for the real world where friends could come and kick your head in.This sort of teaching will just get the over confident kid hurt when they should just have run.I stumbled across your vids and while i respect your right to practice what you like its selling snake oil to kids.
@Thensolomonsaid That's just your opinion and your comment of 'with respect' holds little sincerity. Do you really think after 40 years of training I have not considered the implications of ground fighting as opposed to stand up? Strangely we can do both reasonably effectively and many karate clubs would benefit from more grappling as it is not practiced enough. Why do MMA go to the ground - often no choice or strategy! This is single combat not multiple. Even then you may have no choice.
Thank You Sensei. Please post if you are ever able to come to the US. My email: goju.yudansha@gmail.com I have several Okinawa karate contacts here. Mostly on the East Coast.
Do you ever do seminars in the US? Would love to train with you. Have studied goju since 1973. Your videos are wonderful. Thanks for all you do for martial artists.
@MrGojuyudansha Hi Thanks for your kind comments - I have trained in the states, once in Las Vegas with one of my Sensei Paul Perry we went to train with Chinen and Kanazawa on a special course about 10 years ago. The problem is cost, time and venue, plus I only have a couple of contacts in the USA. Regards Tom
Oooos Sensei. My deepest apologies if I have offended you, for my question, in hind sight may have been a foolish one. I currently practice wing chun and pekiti tirsia. I am also a san dan in Goju ryu. Goju is a power and graceful style which as you may imagine I respect greatly. If I may state please. I have learned Pain must become a familiar friend for we give it and receive it, so it must be controled if not mastered. And secondly we practice exercises to apply and escape from locks
@henmanator Hi - No offense taken, some pain can be controlled other types of pain are debilitating. Few come back from broken arms, broken leg, broken jaw, ribs etc as this techniques shows. Regards tom
@henmanator If you tighten your legs it'll restrict their mobility, and if you have an armbar that he doesn't get out, apply power until he quits or is forced to. It's sort of like in Aikido where it appears the opponent has lots of available strikes, but if the lock is good, they won't go for it to preserve their limbs.
@henmanator How do you stop him doing a whole variety of things? This is a Bunkai not a Panacea. The degree of pain he would be in may well stop any further retaliation. Regards tom
Best place to test what you learn is against some one who will throw realistic attacks MMA comps are worth testing what you teach and learn so you can make changes and refine your techniques
@rohitverma56, Hi, I enjoy MMA contests and respect the contestants, we in Karate come at it a different way - it does not make it wrong just different. I do not need to be punched in the face to know it hurts. We pressure test in our own way. mma Contests are not the 'real world' either. It is unrealistic to imagine every attacker is a world class MMA fighter. Live and let live. regards tom
@TOMHILLSVISION a Pro MMA fighter is better able to fight on a street then a person learning self defence course with no adrenaline fueled enviroment IMO cos you hear storys of guys doing these courses and when engaged in a street fight they freeze up where as a Pro MMA fighter is able to deal with the adrenaline much better then some one not tested under x-tream pressure
@rohitverma56 Yeah I know, Pro MMA are better at everything. I like MMA but I happen to do Karate you know the thing where most of the MMA learned much of the stuff they do. Why look at this site? plenty of MMA vids around. Perhaps they will make you less angry.
Dont waste your time brother if you don't know you don't know. If they cant see that there is a big difference in fighting in the ring and real life that on them. There are a lot of techinques in MMA that are not realistic. Whole scenario is impractical. My advise to you brother is to keep doing what you are doing. Take care oss
you should definitely pressure test some of this in full-contact fashion or even under MMA rules (there's nothing in this vid that isnt permissible under MMA rules). I think the results would be interesting.
@FightersOnlyMagazine Hi Thanks for your interest, self defence is different to combat, if you are fighting - your self defence has not worked. Ring fighting cages and refs (like our stuff ) does not exist in the real world.
@FightersOnlyMagazine Its only about the path you choose. Brutality and effectiveness are not the same thing. Many Karateka have been effective MMA contestants but that does not mean we all go down the same route. We spar with control, but we do not do contests in our system. I have trained with MMA all my life we just come at Martial arts from different perspectives. Comparisons are odious.
@FightersOnlyMagazine why should he definitely pressure test this in full-contact fashion? If he's happy and his students are happy, what's the problem?
MMA is a specific sport - boxing alone wouldn't work in MMA but do you think its ineffective self defence?
@LeighRemedios. Just because the pupils are happy, doesn't mean there's no problem. People can't be misled unless they're happy. E.G, The instructor shows a move where he claims his students can deal with someone who pulls a knife. If the technique is nonsense, then this is highly irresponsible and dangerous. Therefore, there is clearly a problem.
Other moves should be tested in a full-contact fashion to ensure that they are indeed effective.

After the take down granted you stop him from punching you with free hand, however how do you stop him from kneeing you in the nuts?
