A lot of people try to do "instructional" videos, but you have a very clear, very concise method of instruction. Best I've seen thus far. I'm a fairly accomplished striker (more than enough to handle your average douchey tought guy) but have started trying to add some technique and finesse (read as: Skill) to my takedowns and JJ lately. These are very helpful for me, and I thank you for the time you put into making them.
@BATHtoonworks bjj - do check it out. i don't do it (prefer aikido) but this guy and a few others have me convinced - will DEF start learning this amazing art.
I really enjoy around 1:10 in saying to be on an angle. I understood this when I was a White Belt and find Triangles to be the easiest submission to pull off personally. Fantastic video also.
a good escape for that choke is to connect your elbow to the knee on the same side, keeping good posture and then step over with the foot on that side and thrust out of it.
This popular culture exist in martial arts films and such that there is no good answer to the lifting motion, while you have your arms entirely free while t.c-ing. The whole lifting motion is so dependant on balance and an even motion because it's so heavy, that it usually doesn't take a whole lot to disrupt it. With people who can just barely lift, just shift your weight fast to one side and they'll drop again, even when their leg is out of shoulder reach, a good head punch may drop them again.
@MrMZaccone they wont be, that's why you hide the shoulder by putting your hamstring on it. That way its only around the neck and a little bot of an arm. :)
@kratoslevit That's going to require more explanation than you've provided here. "hamstring on the shoulder"? Don't have a clue what you're talking about.
@MrMZaccone Haha, okay ill give it my best shot at explaining. If i dont explain well PM me and I'll be happy to write it better.
So, in this case, your right leg passes over their left arm. You turn slightly towards your right to get a good angle to lay your right calve (lower leg) across the back of their neck.
Your left leg then clamps over your lower shin which traps their right arm in the triangle too. By hiding the shoulder with your left leg you make sure that your legs are only around...
Hey Stephan, I have been having real trouble trying to pull off the triangle choke because my hobbit sized legs, any tips for finishing the triangle for guys who are short/have short legs?
You can finish people without an arm In the choke but you would have to be super lucky it's always better to put the arm In and put your body on an angle to squeeze it makes the hold so much tighter and you will generally get the tap
Hey. white belt here looking for tips. I was rolling today and had my opponent in a triangle choke... but i didn't have an arm inside the triangle and couldn't choke him out. Do you NEED to have an arm inside your legs for the triangle to work?
these vids are pretty awesome id personally would love to start learning bjj but im not sure there are any places to learn in my area so youtube and sometimes a reluctant friend is the next best thing
Damn man, thanks, that's gonna prove to be very effective since my last triangle choke took like 30 seconds for my opponent to tap out, starting to count when it was fully locked in. I guess I didn't take the angle you demonstrate at 1:06 or so.
Keep up the good work man ! And i'll check out your website for sure, thanks a lot.
@BooRikkaaa101 - haha ya man no doubt. It's pretty surprising Arona, a black belt, didn't hook that leg. Probably never been slammed before so didn't even see it as a problem. That was a brutal mistake I doubt he will make again lol.
btw, the tips he gives here are right on the money.
@BooRikkaaa101 Arona did first common mistake from this video, he didn't cross his legs under his knee, he crossed it more near the ankles, i just watched the video...
Awesome tips. The hip movement, creating that angle can really make the difference. It makes it a lot tighter. One thing I was taught was that having head control while doing that, prevents the issue when they stand up. WIth head control, its nearly impossible for them to stand up before you make them tap.
Stephan, can you make a video about triangle choke from mount position, something like demian maia did to chael sonnen at UFC 95. I have been trying this quite a lot with not too much success.
@bosniapow3r you can check out some of Eddie Bravo's techniques, he addresses the triangle from the mount in a video or two posted by submissions 101. I think it was called the 'gangsta lean'.
What about posture control? I was looking through Ryan Hall's mastering the triangle DVD and he claimed that it's often neglected by most beginners. It's helped out my triangle tremendously.
@Daggerfall40 You're right. Posture control is also really important. A few of the grips and details I show in the video will help you greatly with posture control, but I probably should have isolated it as yet another common mistake. Oh well...
@StephanKesting Great video, one question...if I grab the head (when having my opponent in the triangle) to pull down, does it become a neck crank or it just amplifies the force for a choke?? , I train judo and we can choke, but we cannot use neck cranks, bcause they´re forbidden in competition....thanks a lot
@Daggerfall40 one way isby grabbing your shin to keap his posture down, i personal dont like grabbing my foot becayse it seems looser thn when i grab my shin
I love watching your videos and reading the emails. I can't wait for the opportunity to apply them in class. The only problem is trying to remember exactly what to do for each varying situation lol

@MrMZaccone are only around the neck of the opponent.
This means that you do not require long thin legs to apply this choke on a large person.
Hope this helped!
