  • A lot of people try to do "instructional" videos, but you have a very clear, very concise method of instruction. Best I've seen thus far. I'm a fairly accomplished striker (more than enough to handle your average douchey tought guy) but have started trying to add some technique and finesse (read as: Skill) to my takedowns and JJ lately. These are very helpful for me, and I thank you for the time you put into making them.

  • @BATHtoonworks bjj - do check it out. i don't do it (prefer aikido) but this guy and a few others have me convinced - will DEF start learning this amazing art.

  • Awesome vid thanks for sharing

  • FINAL SOME WHO KNOW WHAT THEY ARE SAYING

  • Nice .... very good tutorial

  • what type of fighting is this?

  • Fifth thing you do is wash the ball sweat off of your face.

  • @grandaddynative

A proper triangle choke is when he snifs his own arm

  • Comment removed

  • a good escape for that choke is to connect your elbow to the knee on the same side, keeping good posture and then step over with the foot on that side and thrust out of it.

  • using an overhook for the leg when they go to stand up is better control

  • This popular culture exist in martial arts films and such that there is no good answer to the lifting motion, while you have your arms entirely free while t.c-ing. The whole lifting motion is so dependant on balance and an even motion because it's so heavy, that it usually doesn't take a whole lot to disrupt it. With people who can just barely lift, just shift your weight fast to one side and they'll drop again, even when their leg is out of shoulder reach, a good head punch may drop them again.

  • triangle ? 90 degrees ? straight line? rotate? answers? is this a math class?

  • Another great video. Thanks Stef

  • very good job , man I am a blue belt form brazil, thank you

  • Thanks thanks thanks

  • i love this choke in Judo, very few people see it coming until its cutting off the blood. haha

  • SHOULDER WALK!!!

  • @GracieJiuJitsu1015 Thank you ... exactly.

  • So, what if the guy is just too big to get your ankle in your knee joint?

  • @MrMZaccone they wont be, that's why you hide the shoulder by putting your hamstring on it. That way its only around the neck and a little bot of an arm. :)

  • @kratoslevit That's going to require more explanation than you've provided here. "hamstring on the shoulder"? Don't have a clue what you're talking about.

  • @MrMZaccone Haha, okay ill give it my best shot at explaining. If i dont explain well PM me and I'll be happy to write it better.

So, in this case, your right leg passes over their left arm. You turn slightly towards your right to get a good angle to lay your right calve (lower leg) across the back of their neck.

Your left leg then clamps over your lower shin which traps their right arm in the triangle too. By hiding the shoulder with your left leg you make sure that your legs are only around...

  • @MrMZaccone are only around the neck of the opponent.

This means that you do not require long thin legs to apply this choke on a large person.

    Hope this helped!

  • @kratoslevit Umm, no. There are guys in my class too wide to do that to. You can now PM me if you think it will help.

  • @sleeykid156 its all about ur flexibility work on that and it doesn't matter if u hav short legs

  • I kept screwing up at #2, very informative. Thank you.

  • you got a new subscription

  • GREAT!!

  • Hey Stephan, I have been having real trouble trying to pull off the triangle choke because my hobbit sized legs, any tips for finishing the triangle for guys who are short/have short legs?

  • Great tips Thanks

  • where can i buy the book?

  • Very instructive. Thank you very much!

  • these tips are nice good, but it's the same thing in million other places. these are just white belt tips, everybody says that same damn thing.

  • You can finish people without an arm In the choke but you would have to be super lucky it's always better to put the arm In and put your body on an angle to squeeze it makes the hold so much tighter and you will generally get the tap

  • u guys should check out mat battle . com for the best tutorials. it's where the twister originated from

  • Hey. white belt here looking for tips. I was rolling today and had my opponent in a triangle choke... but i didn't have an arm inside the triangle and couldn't choke him out. Do you NEED to have an arm inside your legs for the triangle to work?

  • these vids are pretty awesome id personally would love to start learning bjj but im not sure there are any places to learn in my area so youtube and sometimes a reluctant friend is the next best thing

  • Canadian much, eh?

  • Rampage does not like people having an answer to triangles. He disliked it twice.

  • oooo that's cool!

  • Its much harder for him to stand up stand up please.

  • Damn man, thanks, that's gonna prove to be very effective since my last triangle choke took like 30 seconds for my opponent to tap out, starting to count when it was fully locked in. I guess I didn't take the angle you demonstrate at 1:06 or so.

Keep up the good work man ! And i'll check out your website for sure, thanks a lot.

  • Easy to understand.

  • I bet Ricardo Arona wished he underhooked Rampage's leg, maybe then he wouldn't have got totally fucked up.

  • @BooRikkaaa101 - haha ya man no doubt. It's pretty surprising Arona, a black belt, didn't hook that leg. Probably never been slammed before so didn't even see it as a problem. That was a brutal mistake I doubt he will make again lol.

btw, the tips he gives here are right on the money.

  • @BooRikkaaa101 Arona did first common mistake from this video, he didn't cross his legs under his knee, he crossed it more near the ankles, i just watched the video...

  • all you have to do to get out of a triangle is stack up...

  • Very useful tips. unfortunately im in a place where bjj schools don't exist so these online tutorials are the only place where i can learn.

  • Stephan you are an amazing teacher. Thanks so much for posting these and for the emails.

  • Cool ..;-) I am yoga teacher and this is new to me - love it

  • Awesome tips. The hip movement, creating that angle can really make the difference. It makes it a lot tighter. One thing I was taught was that having head control while doing that, prevents the issue when they stand up. WIth head control, its nearly impossible for them to stand up before you make them tap.

  • Number 4 = EPIC

  • thank you for these informative videos i have learned alto and am practicing them in my class, which i have made great progress

  • Stephan, can you make a video about triangle choke from mount position, something like demian maia did to chael sonnen at UFC 95. I have been trying this quite a lot with not too much success.

  • @bosniapow3r you can check out some of Eddie Bravo's techniques, he addresses the triangle from the mount in a video or two posted by submissions 101. I think it was called the 'gangsta lean'.

  • @onehandraisinbransam Yeah the "10th Planet Jiu Jitsu" that Eddie Bravo uses has unformal positions like that, including the "gangsta lean".

  • I love your videos. Please keep posting =)

  • Thx, that was helpful. I also get a lot of info from your newsletters. Keep posting plz!

  • great video stephan - keep them coming. thx for posting.

  • Good job!

  • Good job!

  • Thanks for all the past years of great tips!

  • thanks Stephan

  • What about posture control? I was looking through Ryan Hall's mastering the triangle DVD and he claimed that it's often neglected by most beginners. It's helped out my triangle tremendously.

  • @Daggerfall40 You're right. Posture control is also really important. A few of the grips and details I show in the video will help you greatly with posture control, but I probably should have isolated it as yet another common mistake. Oh well...

  • @StephanKesting any tips for posture control?

  • @StephanKesting Great video, one question...if I grab the head (when having my opponent in the triangle) to pull down, does it become a neck crank or it just amplifies the force for a choke?? , I train judo and we can choke, but we cannot use neck cranks, bcause they´re forbidden in competition....thanks a lot

  • @Daggerfall40 Did you buy the mastering the triangle dvd set or download it some where?

  • @Daggerfall40 one way isby grabbing your shin to keap his posture down, i personal dont like grabbing my foot becayse it seems looser thn when i grab my shin

  • @Daggerfall40 hey I know im replying to your comment really late, but where do you find that dvd?

  • I love watching your videos and reading the emails. I can't wait for the opportunity to apply them in class. The only problem is trying to remember exactly what to do for each varying situation lol

  • Mo perry

    Mo problems

    am I right guys

  • cool tips man. keep it up

  • I made the shoulder mistake this sunday.... !!!! Thanks.... !

  • I'd like to see a lesson on the most common mistakes when trying to submit someone... IN SPACE

    Make it happen.

  • Dude, this is great.

  • Show some guard passes please

  • Always good tips and he seems like a classy guy!

  • Great video, sir. I'm sure you are very busy. Are you planning on adding more stuff to your iPhone apps anytime soon?

  • @bzterp I'm tentatively planning to release another iPhone app this year if I can ever find the time to script it and shoot it!

  • This is an excellent technique series. Learning how to do complex stuff is hard enough without having the bare essentials down first.

  • Thanks! Glad you like it. I've got a few more submissions left from this filming session.
