Music is nothing but scales and arpeggios. This is none if the above. It is interesting though. It is extremely difficult to play around with dissonance and it sound that well.
I'm a cellist. This is definitely a unique and wonderful piece. Good rendition as well. The people who criticize this lack the mind required to understand music's multitudinous incarnations. The tastebuds of their narrow eardums shrink from alien flavours.
@skyd171 It's not that we "lack the mind" it's that when we listen to music, we want to LISTEN to it, not sit down and analyze it. Music is meant to be beautiful formed from the soul, not formed from math like this music. This music is garbage, it shows no emotion besides confusion and anger. It has no pulse, it has no feel, the only thing it does have in common with music is sound. Even from a market point of view this music has failed, DOWN WITH CONTEMPORARY MUSIC!!!!!
@kifani1 Please spare me your ignorance. All music is mathematical, hence time signatures and note durations and tonic intervals. You are grossly naive and ignorant. What is even more worthy of laughs is that you describe this piece with terms like "soul", "pulse", and "feel", as if you have the authority to judge what those words mean in the context of music. Your idiotic rant taxes the foundations of logic. Be gone.
@skyd171 I didn't say music didn't involve math, just not all music is formed from math like this garbage, the only reason why people like this music is because it's complicated. Anybody can "write" noise like this, write down the notes and label it music. Even the title says it, new noise. Exactly what it is, and what this will always be, noise. This music is useless as John Cage's 4'33". Beethoven is rolling over in his grave because of this noise.
@kifani1 And with that said, I don't want to argue anymore because then I'll have to keep coming on this video and listen to this garbage. Post what you will, I don't care. This music sucks and hopefully we'll have some actually talented composers soon who will remind us of what music sounds like, not math equations.
@kifani1 Again, you're no authority on what music is. For some reason you think you are. Your opinions are one-sided and narrow, scarcely worth reading.
I liked it. It's not Bach, to be sure, but I enjoy hearing people explore the tonalities offered by the queen of instruments, the cello. And there is no king.
This is trash. Yes, they're chords, but that doesn't excuse it from being junk. You can call it expressionist all you want. But at the end of the day it's still trash.
its like she wrote this on the bus to the gig. a last minute crack at an assignment or something. "if its total crap ill sell it as obscure and insightful". shut up.
It's hard to dance to, but I kinda liked it. The slow slides were pretty sweet, and I really enjoyed when it would come down to the low two open strings for a consonant growl.
Everyone's entitled to their opinions. I liked it and have no reason to think she didn't perform the piece as written.
@annatompkins You're retarded. How long do you think it took to write this? The composer didn't freaking Jackson-Pollock some notes onto a page - they designed art.
@VeryInvading honestly, I'm not trying to start anything but, the first time I played a cello this is what it sounded like. it seems like she might as well be free-styling.
Modern composers have no ideas any more. It seems anything worthy to be composed has been composed but they want to continue and compose such a nonsense. It is good to have a wide horizon but it should not go so far that they can pull my leg and name it art.
Such astute musical criticism. This group of nay-sayers probably belongs to the same school of critics that bad-mouthed the Mona Lisa. Come to think of it this lady's performance exudes some of the same characteristics, musically, as does the Mona Lisa visually. Can't please them all ladies.
I don't think she gets modern music! Messiaen, Stravinsky, Schoenberg etc. would all turn in their graves! I guess Johanne Heraty is a bit sad and the performer isn't the best either. I would not clap at the end like the others!
Would crisper articulations make this better? Try making this completely metric and even to start and then pick irregularities based on what you see as harmonically important? Pick voices. Sing the melody and then you'll know how to play it. Maybe. These are just guesses. Nice job with a weird piece.

i hate how people think that they can just smash notes together, add some vibrato, and then it's an insightfully abstract piece of genius.
