  • film is a lot richer, but if you're technologically savvy you can make any digital image to look LIKE film with color processing

  • You really can't judge which is better from that video because of YouTube's compression. You can only judge the colors which, uncorrected, look better (or more faithful) on digital than 16mm. 35 mm looks better than anything on the big screen (except Imax or 65 mm of course).

  • Film looks better than digital.

  • Film = more fun with the camera :)

Digital = less fun with the camera :]

Instant Film = instant fun with the camera :D

  • film

  • Film still owns almost all

  • The beginning song is Paul Winchell and Jerry Mahoney! look them up!

  • shot in VHS? wtf?

  • Watch Inland Empire.

That film changed my mind about digital.

  • @jetflint123

Why would Red have bothered to come up with a high bitrate proprietary codec that at it's lowest is 28 megaBYTES per second if HDV's 3.125 megaBYTES per second was in quality to a 16-bit film scan? Why would they bother implementing a 3k, 4k or 5k sensor for that matter? Seems like a waste of money on the part of many Red customers if HDV has already superior in quality to 35mm film for many years...yet Red Epic is still not quite on par with 35mm film in a number of respects as

  • This video says that it all depends in the user

  • I am a teen and I love using both digital and film. I look at the history of photography and enjoy it all rather than compare. It is all interesting to me.

  • the song has a high frequency sound.

  • p.s. Don't quote me on what I said, I work with James Cameron as one of his camera men.

  • I don't know if you know, but even professional film makers like James Cameron use old analog film. You know why? Because Analog film get's about 50 times the quality for big screens. You just have a shitty camera my friend

  • @TeamPill thats a lie, in an interview, James Cameron said he loves the onset of new technologies such as DIGITAL and greenscreening etc. He said it saves a lot of time and money, which it does.

  • @TeamPill Avatar was shot on digital. Even the live action parts.

  • I like how a lot of this is just digital vs manual focus, I always use manuel, lol funny video though.

  • I learned photography on my mom's old Pentax film camera. I'd always get film for my birthday, haha.

  • Film can yield just as good a result as digital, and generally has a more authentic look to it. However, digital photography has just sped up the process the process and allowed for a lot more customisation. This means photography has been opened up to the masses. Is this good or bad? 'Spose it depends who you are.

  • @LIBltdProductions

Sure about that? According to Roger Deakins, at this point digital is just better using the right cameras.

  • I'd take a Leica film camera over any digital.

  • El que no sabe usar analógica no es fotógrafo. El que es fotógrafo ama la analógica por siempre, nunca va a mirar una con cara de "que porqueria".

  • Haha great ♥

  • There's nothing wrong with digital. Nothing wrong with editing necessarily, but it gets old seeing the same trick over and over--with editing and photoshop. It isn't a matter of film and digital necessarily, but rather applying the film "standards" of minimalism and lack of editing. Everyone who buys an SLR is suddenly a "photographer" and anyone who knows nothing about photography too easily likes their oversaturated and contrasty nonsense that they put through some color and vignette filter.

  • Film is obsolete. There are many lingerers who still grasp onto things for the mere sake of grasping though. Film has very few advantages over video, but video has leaps and bounds of advantages over film. Analog will always do a few things seamlessly, but also shit all over in other aspects.

  • the film shots obviously have more dynamic range

  • now how did they get the film on youtube?

  • @omg101man same way they got blade runner on Blue Ray ;-)

  • @omg101man lol no realy ? are you teasing me? (also I don't think the video is shoot on film ;-) )

ok , incase your not teasing me , google "Motion picture film scanner" or Tele-Cini(normaly thats for SD)

The resolution will depend upon the output and budget, 2k and 4k are probably most common.

Once scanned it can be stored in a digital intermediary format with a high bits per channel and no compression(some form of image file for example cineon dpx).

    Then sync sound and output.

  • @stu0things0and0stuff oh ok. but film doesn't contain pixels right.'

  • @omg101man Tron does and that was shoot on film ;-)

You scan the film at a resolution where you pickup the silver halides pattern, they are the limiting factor in a films ability to resolve detail and sort of the equivelent of pixls.

Think of microfilm, that has a pritty high density as you can store a very detailed image in a very small space, so it's most likely got a very low ASA rateing.

Low rated film generaly has finer grain, fast films are generaly more coarse.

  • @stu0things0and0stuff I stand corrected apparently some of it was shoot 16mm (always read the description fully) ;-)

  • @omg101man Same way movies get them on CD's

  • @omg101man FACE PALM!

  • @omg101man you scan the negative in a lab (there are actual labs that do this, sort of like the your average kiosk at CVS or Wal Mart that develops film photographs, except more expensive) then you can ask them to scan it to digital after developing - give it to you on a DVD or BluRay, the rest is just simple encoding to files and such.

  • Can I shoot film and not be called a fucking hipster?

  • @sammyyyy90 only if you use an eye level finder not a waist level one ;-)

  • I'd say Film for making a movie

Digital for VBlogs and News :D

  • hipster much

  • Dynamic range on 16mm! Is unbeatable.

  • dude, seriously, fuck this song. both formats have their obvious pros and cons.

  • loved it. great music, too!

  • Film Wins

  • wonderful!! comparision !!! fantastic i rather film focus

  • I Like Film Better

  • Cute video. Why does the film guy keep looking at his camera like it has a screen or something?

  • And that is why I film in digital-film. Only down side is uploading...

  • You'll always hear people ask "could you make digital footage look more film like" but never "could you make this film look more digital."

  • Film has a better feel. But 16mm are shit compared to a 35mm

  • why film look so much better then digital ?

  • Very smart idea! I am a film maniac, i love making them as much as i love watching them! The only constructive criticism I can give you is be careful of the length of the video. Short and sweet work better than long and boring (not saying that your's was). I just felt that there was some lengthy parts in it. But great job. I'd like to know if you wouldn't mind taking a look at my stuff and criticizing it! :P

  • what a smart video! never would have thought of that

  • I have an Olypmus fe(cheap 80$ digital camera), and an Olympus is-3 DLX(...a late 90's SLR?).

Both take badass pictures, and I use both in manual mode, I save automatic modes for point-n-shoot. they both can do things that the other can't do, so I like both xD

  • Wow, this was great! What grade did you end up getting?

  • the best was that moment of suspense at the end!

  • A very well-made video, thanks.

  • Morale of the story, Digital looks cool!,Film looks epic!! and no one likes those old Polaroid cameras haha

  • @socloseno If no one liked polaroid anymore, then why is there a factory making unofficial polaroid film to meet the massive demand? I concede it is very expensive, you are basically buying a camera each time you reload :P

  • Digidull can't "hold" highlights.

  • Digidull.

  • I love NIN

  • Film looks more natural to me when shot in broad daylight than Digital does.

I'd like to see a night time comparison.

  • it's funny, very good job

  • I think film would be more natural because it is light hitting the film and exposing it directly. Digital cameras process all the light and convert it to an image. I'm not sure how it compresses all of that data, but it does typically look less dirty than film.

  • would you say film is a bit more saturated?

  • Prefer 35mm but the RED cam is pretty good me thinks.

  • Very homosexualish video! Annoying music too!

  • Its the ones who passionately stick to one without appreciating the benefits/downsides of the other that are the saddest of all.

However those who do have that understanding, will get the most out of Photography

  • very poor transfer of the film.............

  • Film is natural. And anyone knows natural techniques gives the best result.

    So fuck digital.

  • @davidtheguitarman digiral is natural to as long as its RAW

  • film has taught me the theory behind a camera, how a camera works, restraint with shots, and how to be patient. but has been ruined by hipsters. digital has revolutionized photography, made trips to the lab obsolete, instantaneous results, auto when feeling lazy, and no money wasted on film. but has been ruined by pseudo-photographer teens using their mom's credit card to buy expensive cameras they don't know how to work. film and digital go together, hand in hand. respect for both.

  • @ZachWasHere Worst of both worlds: Instagram. Pseudo-potographer teens with expensive iPhones pretending they're hipsters with Holgas. Except I use hipstamatic constantly so I really shouldn't talk.

  • @ZachWasHere I agree that film is WAY better, but the problem is that film cameras cost a ton of money, and film cost even more now. Now, that definitely wouldn't stop me, and in the future I hope to get a film camera myself. I'm 15 years old, and I have shot in both digital, and film, and I know that with patience, comes a great picture not one million. The most important thing a filmmaker/photographer can have is their imagination.

  • @Marco007Marco007

You can get an amazing film camera on eBay for £30 including postage and film isn't terribly expensive either. The Fuji Superia range is very affordable.

    eBay is your friend.

  • @simozonelayer I have a film camera, are you referring to a video camera? 8mm? 16mm? Ebay would be your best friend in this case.

  • @Marco007Marco007 I was meaning film 'stills' cameras, that many aren't as expensive as they once were and many are cheaper than most entry level DSLRs via 'The Bay'.

  • @simozonelayer Oh, I already have one. I've shot on it before, it takes beautiful shots... when taken properly. The last time I used it, I didn't have a clue what ISO, aperture, f/stop, etc did, so the pictures ended up coming out terrible, expect for one shot that looked really nice. When I enter University I'll get a film 'video' camera, preferable a timeless Bolex Super16, which run about over $2000 for a whole kit. It would seem more appropriate then. Do you own a DSLR?

  • @Marco007Marco007 Film cameras don't cost a ton of money, dude. I just bought a Zenit TTL on eBay for $45. I don't think film is too expensive either, it's just the processing of the film is what puts a hole in your pocket.

  • @ZachWasHere Nice. I have a Pentax P3 with 50mm lens, and 28mm wide angle. Yea, processing cost a lot, especially for rolls of film. I can only imagine the cost to convert 16mm footage to 2k resolution :\

  • @Marco007Marco007 That Pentax reminded me of my Canon AE-1 Program, I love using that camera. And I don't want to think of that price, lol. I think it'd be hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. >_>

  • @ZachWasHere Nice camera! They look very similar. Yeaaaa :\ that's my biggest problem with shooting video with film (I've never done it, though), especially if you are on a tight budget. I find taking photos with film is more fun, because you have to think about what you are doing carefully.

  • @ZachWasHere I think most teens would know what they are getting into when buying a film camera. I also think that they will pay for the camera and stock themselves. Maybe a parent may provide a 'video' camera when they are growing up, one that the parents have already used for home videos, and kids can play around with that, but that is probably as close as a parent will get for buying a kid a camera.

  • @ZachWasHere And faggot YouTubers that think they make cool videos.

  • @ZachWasHere Oil paint is totally ruined too. I've seen it used by all sorts of groups I don't align with. Same goes for acrylic.

  • @ZachWasHere Teens haven't ruined anything, if their content is bad no one will watch it, if it's good, it will get noticed, eventually. I agree with with everything else apart from that.

  • @ZachWasHere Would you shut up? You're not as cool as you make yourself out to be.

"I was into film before it was cool."

  • @ZachWasHere Hipsters ruin everything, we just have to deal with it :(

  • @ZachWasHere Who give a fucking fuck about what other people do? Think for yourself, use what you want. It's one or the other.

  • haha

  • Film is just better.

  • Wow, Trent Reznor sounds different, lol

  • Film rocks as an archival medium!

  • digital is fast and natural looking, but film has the vintage film that makes films like the blare witch project famous!

  • hmm both look like dslr to me. :(

  • make a videoo on how to make this color correction "vintage"

  • film colors are more organic and reflects the true contrast on to the 35mm but digital is what ever you get from the sensor feels like it + on 0:58 you can see the difference how the diafram of the camera makes the bottom look like there is a white haze and blurish and the behind of the picture its all blury the only problem with film the sharpness :)

  • love film but i cant afford it so i went with high def

  • the nikon cam shutter sounds like canon's

  • Nicely done. Digital held up better than I thought it would, but film is still king. I'm curious as to the digital camera used.

  • On the right, a film. On the left, a TV commercial.

  • Great short!

  • i'm broken by developing rollfilms.......

  • awesome film dude!

  • I love the film...its just classier, and the grainier look is tastier for my eyes!

  • You can take lots of pictures in digital, you can view pictures instantly with digital, you can easily manipulate pictures with digital, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. The reason I still have a film camera is that you just can't replace the look of a film photo. I also use a digital camera, because I'm realistic and admit I like being able to take lots of pictures.

  • Artist: Nine Inch Nails

Contains content from: Nine Inch Nails

    Wait, what?

  • @nitrate031 1:50 - 2:28 contains music by Nine Inch Nails.

  • @nitrate031 At the 1:50mark, thats Nine inch nails from the ghosts album. The album is just piano and soothing sounds with no lyrics. Some songs were used for the movie: The social network.

  • @nitrate031 Yeah at 1:51 that is nine inch nails, its from the Ghosts album.

  • @nitrate031 Near the end...

  • A lot of digital shooters don't have as much discipline as film shooters. Film makes you think a whole lot more about the shot and it's composition. Not to mention film has been pretty future proof so far, I scanned a whole lot of my old family pictures at 50mp. Plus film is way better at being a archival media.

  • @slu7fuck3r

You speak wise words, but your username is "Slutfu*ker"...

  • Nicely done. Very clever!

  • ...and here I just thought it was a cool video. Digital? Film? They both win. I have both. Whoo-hoo!

  • @TheSonic711 im a (very) young filmmmaker, currently using digital, but would really like to start using film. but how do you edit film, like to put in credits and how to you make it have sound? please help!

  • I couldn't take more than 30 seconds of that song

  • A good filmmaker doesn't need to review their footage 3 seconds after it's done.

A good filmmaker can make any 8mm shot twice as good as a digital shot.

A good filmmaker knows how to use a camera that doesn't look like a toy.

A good filmmaker makes less mistakes on a 35mm shoot than a mediocre one does with digital.

A good filmmaker makes sure his movie is a masterpeice, a REEL movie, not 1s and 0s.

A good filmmaker can afford to record on film.

    A great filmmaker uses film.

    FILM maker.

  • @DulvluSpa and a real movie watcher goes to the theatre, not comment on youtube videos.

  • Firstly, I'm going to an indie film fest for 3 days, staying at a hotel this weekend. In order to raise the money for the hotel room, I entered a video contest and won a cash prize. Secondly, I'm an indie filmmaker. Not a big-time or good one, but an up and coming one. In order to get anywhere, I've been watching the crap out of any film I can find, but only the good ones. I'm sorry if I watch a few videos I can't see elsewhere and give input. And I'm studying the film/digital debate anyways.

  • @DulvluSpa I was being sarcastic, dude. And my point was, saying something flippant like a good filmaker uses film instead of 1s and 0s is silly. As a filmmaker, you should know the output has more to do with the artist than whether it's digital or film. A good filmmaker picks the right tool for the job he wants done, instead of making sweeping naive statements. Maybe a good filmmaker doesn't need to review their footage 3 seconds after shooting, but having that feature doesn't make u a BAD.

  • @ckannan90

Okay, okay. I see your point here. I'm not looking for a flame war. I was exaggerating somewhat, but point is, I'm pro film in what I do... And I'm raising the money to do it. For other entertainment producers- especially television producers- Digital is absolutely mandatory. I could go on about why I use film, and why others would prefer digital, but we have all these videos on YouTube.

  • @DulvluSpa :P

  • @DulvluSpa also, how do you do effects like fading in and out of shots and how did he make the 16mm in this video look so smooth, no grain or faded look at all?

  • Most lenses for film cameras, if not all, have you able to manually adjust aperture and/or exposure while shooting. To make it look modern and have no grain, I recommend getting an adapter for a c-mount camera so it can use a Canon lens. A Bolex EBM is one of the best 16mms ever, but $8,000. Look around for a local film developing/scan business. Some are bad, some are great. Should cost around $250 for a full 400' reel. To edit directly, get a film splicer and projector. PM me for more details.

  • @DulvluSpa Denying yourself features just to prove a point doesn't make you a better filmmaker. Sometimes you might want to review a shot after filming. A good filmmaker's focus is getting a good shot, not proving a point to an imaginary outsider. If this feature helps you achieve that, that's all that should matter. The objective is the final film.

I'm sure you are in a better position to understand this than I am, being a filmmaker.

  • @DulvluSpa Not attacking you man, just felt you were generalizing and picking a side for no reason.

  • @DulvluSpa Rock star.

  • @DulvluSpa There's so much that's wrong with this comment.

  • Uh, operator skill has everything to do with what you get out of a camera.

  • Nice concept by the way your mom is hot... Oh I was hoping you would have put the photo's in the credits. but seriously your mom +++

  • Who sang the song in the end? o.O

Hell, punk rock of Over the Rainbow!

  • Is this video made in Austin TX near Capitol?

  • @ScaryHands I was happy to see my old city posted on youtube :)

    I miss you Austin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • okay common digital all the way. stop kidding yorself people, today is already today.

  • @aprocter which song version of anything you can do i can do better is this, thanks in advance.

  • nice song ....

  • The 16mm footage looked a bit like the footage from the original Fake trailer "Machete"

  • You don't shake Polaroids! D:

  • This video highlights one of the problems with the digital photography boom. People buy a dslr and suddenly they're photographers? They take tons of snapshots without having to worry about developing the images, and are less prone to really take care in composition. With film you're more likely to capture a well composed, properly exposed image. DSLR's are for the mindless sheeple consumers.

  • @Heatherofthepines found the manual switch on a dslr?

  • @Heatherofthepines it's fun that you wrote to my inbox..and yes i have a life, but i would never use a camera fully automatic..we live in the 21 century and when new cameras are made the technology becomes better, so eventhough you/he/she/it/i use a digital i would only set it to shoot manually...and yeah so is the case that consumers want it to be easier and more versatile to use the cameras, so the companies make them with that in mind...and i really don't mind anyone using it as a p&s lol

  • @TheChill0ut didn't mean to send it to your inbox, I responded to your comment from my phone and I guess that's how it handles comment responses. I don't have a problem with p&s either, my problem is with people taking crappy snapshots w/o thinking about composition or lighting. You can do that just as easily with a dslr as with a p&s. Bad photos are like bad poetry: there's way too much of it in the world, and we could all do with a little less.

  • @Heatherofthepines yeah absolutely it's true that photography should be better compositioned and have a meaning before the shot, i guess that most of the people use cameras just to capture life and friends with ease instead of having "the trouble of twisting a few knobs" to take better photos..but then it's the matter that companies don't want to get back to the golden ages when nothing was digital when it's easier to go with the flow and become mainstream..cont.

  • @TheChill0ut we just have to deal with the fact that cameras will be used for other purposes than great photos with a good composition

  • We see in Video, we dream in Film.

  • Sure you can do a lot of photos with digital and sure you are limited in shots with film, sure maybe you have better resolution with film and minor in digital...but i think that the main difference is SKILL.

  • great short man. just graduated film school and in the industry now, and this was remarkable work. keep it up man.

  • Notice that they both went to the digital part in the end >:D

  • Please answer me, as the first song called

  • i had like 3 digitals and there good and all but i felt like my pictures with the film camera came out way better and digitals are to expensive, Fuck digital!

  • Great idea and editing!

Can I ask? What was the film stock used Kodak or Fuji?

And why is film part has purple or like magenta image ?

Is there any color correction on film scaned or it's just as shot ?

    Thanks.

  • Only children argue whether Film or Digital is better.

Real photographers know its all in the composition and the lens you use.

  • So you're condemning one generalization by making several others. Wonderful.

In fact, you should know that in the end, loads of factors affect every image, and every frame of video. Film and digital are each relevant to that discussion, but not all film is created equal, neither in size, nor in resolution, nor in color reproduction. Not every digital sensor is the same, either.

Beyond that, there's an enormous amount you can do in post to affect the image. Don't fight dogma with dogma.

  • @foxyboxin

aaaaaAAAAAND we see someone who can't take a joke!

    COME ON DOWN!

  • @Geoffboyardee Yeah, I've seen jokes; that wasn't one. But uh, nice awkward attempt at tacking on a The Price is Right reference where it doesn't make sense.

  • @foxyboxin

Wow, you've just got to bring people down, don't you. Making situations where they hardly even exist. Do you think you proved anything by calling me out? That by making a deal out of nothing has contributed to the greater good of society? Plus, you can't even see that that reference fit very well into my reply so you can just scoot on down the line and use the knowledge given in this video to whatever you feel.

  • film can see thing HDV doesn't. simple as that.

  • @rockangel1967 Point out an example from this video.

  • This reminds me of the last hike I went on. There was a lovely waterfall and I made a total of three exposures of it with my film camera. While the digital photographer next to me took at least 30-40 shots. Boy, it sure must be fun to sort through hundreds of identical images on your computer lol. Use what you want but I'll stick with film.

  • Anything you can do I can do better

  • If someone know the title of the first song THX !

  • What's the difference? digital? film? i'm using booth and honestly - i can't picture myself using film on wedding reception. First - the amount of footage, secondly - totally unexpected light environment... But... outdoor session? why not :D.. Further more... I actually prefer film over digital in outdoor sessions :D

  • The thing is the FILM portion of this is filmed on 16mm... Try 35mm and then tell me Digital is better ; )

  • @DonRMB Than to be fair, shoot digital on Red EPIC.

  • STOP trying to justify digital because you want things to be more convenient. Seriously film is better. Let's be honest!

  • lol

  • I LOVE THIS VIDEO DESPITE OF WHO IS THE BEST!!! YOU GUYS DID A GREAT JOB!!!!
