Hi, Robert I have been playing for a month and I have learned the flat, minor, and major chords from someone who has sent me diagrams to my mailbox and the A chord is that what a regular A chord is no minor sharp or flat? Please respond I am a beginner trying to play and I would apreciate your help.
OK, ENOUGH FOR THE F***ING WRIST ACHING!.. NOW I WILL GONNA TELL YOU THE SECRETE, "BUY D'ADDARIO STRINGS!.. BUY THE AMERICAN BRONZE 85/15 SUPER LIGHT" I SWEAR TO GOD! THEY ARE SUPER SOFT STRINGS! THEY ARE SOFT AS NYLON STRINGS! THEY ARE SUPER SOFT AND THEY HAVE A BRIGHT TONE! DAMN I LOVE D'ADDARIO!.. ENOUGH OF SHITY BEGINNER WRIST AND TUMB PROBLEMS! "PLAY REAL! PLAY D'ADDARIO!"
I was wondering how long it would take me (with maximum practice) to learn to play barre chords effortlessly. At the moment I can sort of play barre chords but it is very much hit and miss and at this stage I am not proficient enough to transition between chords. I would really like to know a rough estimate by when I could play barre chords as effortlessly as how you are doing in this video.
@ANOTHERHOLEINYOHEAD It's all practice man. Just keep at it, spend atleast an hour a day with your guitar and you'll get there. Great guitarists like Zakk Wylde would come home from school and he would play till he passed out. Practice makes perfect, just don't give up. :)
Hi Robert, take a look at 6:49. You said you couldnt get the last note to sound very easily. I just wanted to know if you meant the thin e string. I hope I am making sense?
@ANOTHERHOLEINYOHEAD Yes, that is correct. That is because the ring finger is barring 3 notes, and it's difficult to sharply bend that finger so that the high E string will ring. Makes sense?
I need some help here. I got no problem playing a single bar chord or passing from one to another. My problems comes after 2 minutes that I've played, then my wrist starts aching. What am I doing wrong?! For an example: I've been trying to play "the man who sold the world" nirvana's version without changing my guitar's tunning so you got to play all the chords as bar chords and I just can't finish the song, my wrist starts achinng so I must stop. What should I do?
@abstractbio If the action is too high, that could be a reason. Or you may need thinner strings. Or just play more, and maybe not play bar chords for very long at a time. Over time, it should get easier. Hope that helps.
oh ya how many people see guitars with 30 darn frets. and u know what i hate sometimes... is when on a tab its like on the bottom e strnig one finger goes onto the 4 fret and then on the b string ur hold down the string on the 9th fret...how the heck are you supposed to do that unless ur hands are freaking like big and have long fingers....ive seen tabs like that lol
@mustaine566 After sometime of playing you'll be capable of "opening" more your hand, increase the distance between your fingers. Also note that the 4th fret of the e string gives you the same note that the 9th fret of the b string, if you play those in the same tempo it would sound like an accent and you can also play it like this: 9th fret of the b string and 13th fret on the g string, this way the distance between your fingers shall be shorter..
when i started playing bar chords a lil fluently my thumb used to start hurting after played for a lil while and i thought consistency comes with time but it has been almost 6 months and i have been practising daily but my thumb still ends up hurting a lot i have no other option but to stop playing.i can play bar chords really well without any buzzing but every time i play em for kinda longer my thumb hurt ..plzz tell me whatz going on ...and great lesson
@thebest386 do you use ur thumb to pick the strings mostly or a pick.. i recamend a pick i use picks on guitars including bass.. use em on bass to give me more the feel of playing a guitar how i like to
@thebest386 Almost the same here! :( my wrist starts aching after some minutes of playing. I've been trying and practicing bar chords by 4 months now and my wrist aches just as the first day. Try playing in other positions: for example I played sit down and than I stand up, position change gives me a couple of minutes more before the pain stars. It's not an answer but may be useful.

I'd suggest, if you have both electric and acoustic, that you learn how to play them on acoustic first (as with all things guitar, in my opinion) because by the time you master them on acoustic, you're gonna have them on electric too. :) just something I use :)
WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!!!!!! i dont care where to put my finger on major or minor barre chords i wanna know how the hell u push all the strings down with your damn finger.
Some commenter posted before you "it helps if you tilt your index finger a bit while pressing down so that your bony side pushes against the fretboard" this helped me using the left side of my index finger rather the palm side.
Pretty Cool lesson here, Covers the topic quite well. Ive just made a bunch of detailed courses for beginners and advanced guitarists that you might be interested in. Check it out! would love to know what you and anyone watching this video thinks. Its totally free, and i mean TOTALLY

@cph645 My only problem is muting all the strings, I'm just looking for guidance on that, so for now I'm practicing all my other ones (that I've learned)
@bigmonkeyman44 coming from a guy who tryed learning both, electric is much, much easier. Also, why would it matter if you had an amp or not... the amp doesn't affect how hard it is to press down the strings.
electric guitar without a fuckin amp is harder than a acoustic guitar because the body of the acoustic is hollow and it's basically a built in fuckin amp.

i played plenty of acoustics at guitar shops they're easier than electric without amp.
@Brando7992 umm u have to hold down the fret harder and pick harder on a electric guitar to get a fuckin sound off the guitar.
i just just played a fuckin acoustic guitar at the guitar shop the other day dude it's way fuckin easier dumbass dont have to pick as hard or hold down fret as hard.
GRMBL! i want to barre every string on the 7th fred (or sumthing, dunno what its calledlawl :D) and it wont work :( i can barre like on the 1st till 5th, after that it just plainly wont work, also when i strike like 2 times with my indexfinger on the 1st fred its ok, but after like the 2nd strike it goes like OMGWTFDOESNTWORK X(
Back when i first started playing, barre chords were an absolute nightmare. I cant actually remember when i first started to get it right, think i just played loads of Green Day and Sex Pistols when i was a kid, eventually worked out! BUT no matter how much i play them i always get a shooting pain in between my thumb, after like 6 years of playing barre chords i still get it! Think i have it for life now
I have an issue... perhaps someone can help me? Every time I try to barre chords my wrist hurts like hell. And I mean, I can't play guitar for a half hour - hour after trying. What am I doing wrong?
@koolkat104 I have had this problem too. Make sure your guitar is sitting on your right leg (assuming you're right handed). Also, make SURE you put your thumb behind the fret board. You almost wanna think of yourself as pinching the guitar between your thumb and forefinger. Especially if you're playing acoustic, it could be your fingers just aren't strong enough yet- the more you play the easier it will get. If your strings are medium or heavy, try switching to light guage temporarily.
@koolkat104 saying this, I wil not say that I am awesome at everything, nor have I had this problem, but taking a shot at it, Ill have to say your wrist is not used to the pressure and placement that you have to make with barre chords, the problem that I have mostly is my thumb because I press really hard
@nitropack777 Yeah, that's probably what it is for me. I've only been really trying at guitar since Christmas, so I most likely just have to keep trying barre chords. Thanks.
whenever i try to do this the sound comes out sounding muffled or blocked or dingy whatever words to describe it! exactly how hard do i need to push down ?
@AveriVee What you'll need to do is just use your index(first) finger and just press down on frets, going up from 1 to 12 and making sure that the sound is clean, AND then start putting your other fingers on the guitar
UGH! theres so many videos on what you can do with barre chords. By how to play barre chords, we mean , : "How to physsically get your finger to press down all the god damned strings " We dont want : "where to put your fingers"
@xxelaxela333 agree with what jcampbell777 said, you need to practice (no excuse), but it also helps if you tilt your index finger a bit while pressing down so that your bony side pushes against the fretboard, helps in making all the strings sound out
@Multiturmio You can always do a version that doesn't use all the strings. The A chord, for example, which would normally be done as 577655, you could do as X77655 -- that way you would only need to make a barre on the top two strings!
practice your hands..warm up before you play..then of course playing them makes you better..and a tip..learn to balance the pressure of your fingers..bring the greater pressure on the bottom of the index finger than the low E string(top most string)..and hmm i find it easier to play it on the fret itself..
Very nice tutorial! I could do barre chords before this, but I was very slow then... No way I could have done it in songs where i have to switch within regular and barre chords. Now it is all easier, but with a lot practice... Thanks a lot man!

@GGHaj12 I agree about the chord charts, very handy. Also, barely ten seconds after I was wondering where my thumb should be, the camera turned around to show it. That was great.
A barre chord is what you tie around your drink when you're drunk, to pull the glass up to your mouth. :D)) Actually, I thought I'd never learn to play them, especially the dreaded F barre chord (not the cheater F) but I finally got it down after about 3 or 4 days of practice, practice, practice!! That was about 7 months ago. Keep at it y'all, and eventually you'll be sayin' to yourself, hell, that's not so bad. Gotta crawl before you can ROCK ON!! LOL
@Zaptagious ahahaha, i was playing along, and i started friday night, and here i am on sunday night attempting, and slowly figuring out the barre chord :)
i do both, bars chords as showm, or i do the thumb method on the low E, with my first finger on the high E and B strings. acoustic guitar doing bar chords will be harder than electric, but after some time you hand will become stronger.
an important thing that i didn't hear mentioned is that you can do this with ANY chord that can be barred. so if you've got more acrobatic than average fingers and you decide you want to move the C shape around you can go for it. i probably use the D-minor, F, and B-minor shapes the most. 7ths and 9ths are important too when learning about barre chords which are probably the guitar players most powerful ally.
well, its mostly just about technique, if you use the side of the index finger where it's more boney rather than using the fleshy pads of your finger then you should be able to make a much better sound when barring.

don't press harder. press as lightly as you can and still make the strings ring true. pressing hard will only make you slow and sloppy not to mention it hurts a lot more in a short time. it's all muscle memory. do it a thousand times and you'll bang them out with your eyes closed.
best thing about 5th and 6th string barre chords is they can play all the way up and down the neck in any key and note. very useful for all kinds of playing. It's nasty at first but your fingers will adapt :)
I'm trying to do a b minor chord.I can actually press it strongly, but I cannot transition from A to B minor in time with the song I am trying to play, any suggestions on how to speed up my transitions? Thanks anybody who can help
I have a question, my other fingers all kinda lean towards my index finger. I kinda have messed up fingers, I can't do the vulkan greeting for example

UGH! theres so many videos on what you can do with barre chords. By how to play barre chords, we mean , : "How to physsically get your finger to press down all the god damned strings " We dont want : "where to put your fingers"

@xxelaxela333 its better to try and stick ur hands to the fret with superglue than watch these vdos
jayankaghosh 9 months ago
@xxelaxela333 Its called practice, nothing can replace it and you'll never learn to play guitar without wanting to smash it once or twice
jcampbell777 8 months ago
@xxelaxela333 agree with what jcampbell777 said, you need to practice (no excuse), but it also helps if you tilt your index finger a bit while pressing down so that your bony side pushes against the fretboard, helps in making all the strings sound out

@xxelaxela333 hey i think i found a good way to play them. you want to keep your finger at an angle and the top of your finger should be facing you.

My fingers are just too short for these, I trained for weeks pressing my index finger on all strings but my B and G always died :)
Multiturmio 1 year ago
@Multiturmio You can always do a version that doesn't use all the strings. The A chord, for example, which would normally be done as 577655, you could do as X77655 -- that way you would only need to make a barre on the top two strings!

Just remember to use the slight outer side of of your point finger. it will make it a bit easier. Not the middle.

practice your hands..warm up before you play..then of course playing them makes you better..and a tip..learn to balance the pressure of your fingers..bring the greater pressure on the bottom of the index finger than the low E string(top most string)..and hmm i find it easier to play it on the fret itself..

LOL

Bah, impossible. As far as I know, everyone who can manage a bar chord got their hand chopped off and replaced with a metal hand or something.

my index finger is shaped right to do such a crazy thing. no barre chords for me.
yoderjjy 1 year ago
i do both, bars chords as showm, or i do the thumb method on the low E, with my first finger on the high E and B strings. acoustic guitar doing bar chords will be harder than electric, but after some time you hand will become stronger.

has anyone tried to play "Working class hero" with the barre B-minor chord. it's issss haaard! my arm falls off every time i play it! xD
RMN505 1 year ago
an important thing that i didn't hear mentioned is that you can do this with ANY chord that can be barred. so if you've got more acrobatic than average fingers and you decide you want to move the C shape around you can go for it. i probably use the D-minor, F, and B-minor shapes the most. 7ths and 9ths are important too when learning about barre chords which are probably the guitar players most powerful ally.
cottonmouthsournote 1 year ago
i no i cant do it either!!! and i have a cousin who plays really well and she makes it look so easy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
JTLGP1996 1 year ago
well, its mostly just about technique, if you use the side of the index finger where it's more boney rather than using the fleshy pads of your finger then you should be able to make a much better sound when barring.

soyouwannaplayguitar 2 years ago
your way for the Dmaj shape is much easier. i didnt like the awkward version either. this is so much harder on acoustic but electric not too bad.
2mas999 2 years ago
don't press harder. press as lightly as you can and still make the strings ring true. pressing hard will only make you slow and sloppy not to mention it hurts a lot more in a short time. it's all muscle memory. do it a thousand times and you'll bang them out with your eyes closed.
best thing about 5th and 6th string barre chords is they can play all the way up and down the neck in any key and note. very useful for all kinds of playing. It's nasty at first but your fingers will adapt :)

do exercises to try and make your fingers stronger and more flexible like try and stretch your fingers into vulcan greeting as much as you can :)
