  • DAMN...Neko Case has that strange attraction, a haunting eerie sound, like a siren she leads your ship on to the rocky shore. Been there, done that and I am glad to have lived to tell the tale.

  • Don't let them tell you you're nothing, 'cos you'll change the world, pretty girls.

  • This song and the picture are such a win.

  • "come chain yourself from my ankle...you'll see the world like a bird, diving down low, flying up high through all of these saccharine gutters will ride and I won't say that I told you so!"....

  • This woman has such a spectacular voice, it's untrue.

  • I think this song is about the male dominated society, and the limits that we collectively put on women... man shes hott!

  • @AKINAacacia Actually this song is about abortion. About girls waiting in the Planned Parenthood room about to get abortions.

  • neko case is the kind of woman that prison girls lay awake dreaming about all night

  • what if you're not a pretty girl? should you still put up with shit? just sayin'.

  • @spacefaceification serious?? The point of the song is that all women are "pretty girls"

  • @spacefaceification This is the entire point of the song.... Oh humans and the way you interpret the english language.

  • I have to agree that there is a Morrissey element to this song. Old skool Morrissey, just after leaving the Smiths.

Its due to the minor tonality and the slide vocal line that push an off key feel. Plus its the chord changes, some feel slightly out of place (even though they arent) and the tone of the guitars; the 60's reverb.

They are all things Morrissey has in his music. So yeah, i can see the comparison.

  • Neko Case is amazing.. the lyrics to this song are so awesome!

  • This is so awesome... I've literally just found this artist and am loving it.

    Who drew the picture?

  • Just listened to this on the end of a horror film called Wilderness Survival for Girls. I was surprised to find out it's contemporary. Sounds really 60s. Really nice

  • LIKE IT

  • @rawrocker4ever

YES OH GOD YES. andrew bird is a musical orgasm and his whistling is just glorious.

  • I'm not hearing an abortion angle at all on this, just a "be strong" message for girls..no?

  • this made me break 3 dishes doin em...lol

  • I believe this song is about teenage pregnancy and abortion, and it may be about her mother since she was born of two teenage children, but who am I to interpret?

  • i love her voice<3333

  • Just seen the movie, Wilderness Survival For Girls. This song came at the end but just goes to prove that the killer is not always the obvious one...

  • Just seen the movie (Wilderness Survival For Girls) from where I heard this song. Darkness is more than black and white... the victims end up as the aggressors... go watch the movie...

  • @n1a31y161r I'll definitely go see it now that you've so strongly eluded to how the movie ends.

  • Under rated song, it is about abortion right?

  • @Acexwanderer

I figure it's more about how the shit of world tries to drag the innocent and pretty girls down into the gutters to join them. "Don't let them tell you you're nothing, don't let them break your hearts too"... Fantastic song. I can't really see how a fetus would enter into it, though.

  • @spatterbrain "How you break my heart in this cold waiting room", "The TV is blaring and angry

As if you don't know why you're here", Wind your flimsy blue gowns tight around you

Around curves so comely and sinister

They blame it on you pretty girls" and "But there's millions to count you and keep you

And lovers that don't understand". They kind of imply abortion to me.

  • <3 always makes me smile. . .

    i love neko case

her voice is unique yet fantastic in more ways than one [:

  • I love Neko, such an amazing talent. This is one of my favorite songs of hers as well.

  • I am too excited for Edmonton Folk Festival this summer. Great Lake Swimmers, Iron and Wine, Neko Case.... it couldn't get much better than this. Except in Calgary Folk Festival they are getting The Decemberists, but I would gladly trade them for Neko Case and GLS, which Calgary isn't getting.

  • Lol, Neko Case is who i really want to see at this years folk fest 2, didnt know Iron and Wine are also coming, so very awesome :)

  • yea and micheal franti had to cancel on the calgary folk festival

  • wow. I just discovered Neko and The Decemberists about a year ago. I love them. Who else do you recommend?

  • Andrew Bird. He is magical.

  • Iron and Wine too. very relaxing.

  • Christian Kiefer. He's hard to find but it's good stuff.

  • @sundaynightMeek

    Also Tift Merritt

  • @sundaynightMeek Mindy Smith perhaps?

  • Comment removed

  • @sundaynightMeek sharon van etten, the new pornographers, great lake swimmers

  • Gaaaar!!!!! I'm so excited for her LA show!!!

  • This Chick really likes to play/sing in Eminor Aeolian mode.

  • OK I listened some more...........not just E minor but any Aeolian Mode...!!! which is OK I like to play in Minor Modes too.

  • Dude, chill...

It's just music, and people are entitled to their opinions. Personally speaking, I find Morrissey a bit hit or miss these days.

Meanwhile you bash Neko Case for the directness (or simplicity as you put it) when Morrisey's songwriting too has become quite streamlined.

Not nearly as much wordplay or literary references as his during his reign with the Smiths.

"That's How People Grow Up", however get's my stamp of approval.

  • splendid...

Grace Slick echoeing here and there...(not even disturbing, not even a comparison worth mentioning maybe).

the song is strong, Neko bangs a gong deep in our memory.

  • Interesting...

  • Sorry, mate, she is better than that.

  • I completely agree. She's way better.

  • Definitely. Her singing is better than almost anyone I can think of outside of classical vocalists. I want to think her songs are great, but it's really more her vocal peformance than a real song. I'll bet she could cover some early Dylan amazingly well.

  • Having your hand broken is better than Morrisey.

  • Neko Case is a brilliant singer and artist. Morrisey hasn't been relevant in years. Maybe if Johnny Marr played with him again.

  • amazing sound...!!!

  • i love this song

  • I love this song

  • best neko case song.
