  • This is song is also on a cd i have from the Patsy Watchorn , its called The life of a rover there.

  • seonidhs right well said it should be given its place as not being an irish song.

  • "You've got to move fast to keep up with the times, for these days a man cannot daunder.

There's a bylaw to say you must be on your way and another to say you can't wander"

    Great Stuff!

  • my grandad met luke kelly i was like wat thinkn he was bullshitn ha he wasnt sum buzz ha

  • this song almost makes me cry, somehow it just makes me remember where i grew up

  • scottish + irish + english folk music, all beautiful, and we all sing each others folk songs, be daft not to. the watersons version of this song is amazing too,

  • nobody but luke can make this song so easy but dont any average bother try it.

  • need the lyrics..

  • The song was written by Ewan McColl, a Scotsman who also wrote many other songs about the Travellers.

  • The song was written by Ewan McCall, a Scotsman who also wrote many other songs about the Travellers.

  • For Luke Kelly to choose and sing this brilliant song with such passion and conviction, He certainly did see that it was applicable to travelling people further afeild than the smokey tops of Salford.

  • ONE OF MY DAD'S FAVS AND ONE OF MINE.

  • such a superb lament to these people.....Long may they live and travel, and live the life they live. Great song.

  • Thi song is not irish it was written by Ewan MacColl in 1964, Furthermore Ewan MacColl was born in Broughton, Salford, Lancashire to Scottish parents, he also wrote Dirty Old Town another song that is mistaken by people like yourself as being irish. Both are not irish.

  • @seonidh Really gettin sick of moany people from England and Scotland coming on here and writing comments like yours, we are fully aware that the songs you mention werent written by an Irishman. Its mostly foreigners (esp Americans) who assume that they were. MacColl undoubtedly had Irish travellers in mind when he wrote this however, and Luke Kelly sings it so much better than anyone else, like every other song he sang... So just stop nitpicking and enjoy :)

  • @tony10396861 you can get sick all you want it wont change the fact its not an irish folk song. So you can quit singing dirty old town and its like. Did he have irish travellers in mind? Are you aware of the term tinker also being used in Scotland and the cant of the Highland traveller and lowland gypsy? Also irish pavee have never spoken romanies so no its not about the irish traveller. Nice try but it in no way refers to the pavee. Sing irish folk songs you seem to have a a few.

  • @seonidh I didnt say it was an Irish song, in fact I said precisely the opposite. Im not pretending to be an expert on travellers, im sure your right in what you say, but nevertheless I think the song can apply to travellers anywhere.. Yeah we have plenty of folk songs, as English and Scottish folk singers who sing them know very well. Surely the point of folk songs is that anyone can sing them, no? Youre lucky an Irishman sang this one or it wouldnt be half as good

  • @seonidh. I dont wish to become embroiled in an argument here, but it is just a fact that without artists like Luke Kelly, Christy Moore, Planxty, The Dubliners, The Clancy Brothers etc and the generation of irish folk and trad singers from the 60's and 70's who brought worldwide popularity to a marginal scene and marginal songwriters like Ewan McColl you or I or a myriad of other people would never know who Ewan McColl was....or the many beautiful songs he wrote.

  • @seonidh. I am fully aware and always have been that Dirty Old town is about the town of Salford and that McColl has Scottish roots and not Irish, but its the popularity of the Irish performers of his songs which causes the confusion...not the fault of the singers themselves. Nobody in England....or Scotland for that matter....took Ewan or his songs to their hearts and performed them with such passion....and brought his genius to the world. Be happy songs like this are known of at all. I am. :o)

  • What a wonderful voice, and what a beautiful song

  • i remember him coming to the house in churchtown in the late 60's...me da' was involved in the itinerant selelment committie and put of benifit shows in the abby theatre, after it was back to the house for porter and food.....happy dayze

  • "Luke Kelly", just that name alone has me pre-programed to shudder to the core with patriotism. No singer will ever come close to what that man could do to a song .In 3 minutes he could rip a man down with sorrow and build him back with pride.A genoration has been raised to love every word and many more will follow .

Cheers luke for the good times i spent with your music.

  • the irish johnny cash....

  • Thanks for putting so much of Kelly's vids up. I lost my dad two years ago, was feeling blue and started watching these, he was a huge fan, has made me sadder but also reminds of the time we spent together listening to these songs.
