Due to this crash, Sauber started the headrest invention modern F1 cars have. Although it wasn't untill 1996 all the teams used it. That was a result after Hakkinen's crash.
@kein96 hardly...... it was normal for drivers to die before the 80's. One race weekend claimed the lives of 3 drivers.... can't remember which year or race tho..
Quite right indeed, when I saw the accident I thought the same as well. :)
But Button was luckier because he hit the left guardrail first, which must have slowed him down before hitting the tyre barrier.
Wendlinger lost control and spun but didn't hit anything before the tyre barrier, so he hit it at almost full speed; also, his head struck a water-filled barrier, so he absorbed nearly all the energy from the impact.
Maybe that crash put a stop to Wendlinger's F1 aspirations... :(
@tugatomsk the difference between button's and wendlinger's crash wasn't in speed...button drove a 2003 f1 car and karl one from 1994.that says everything...and for sure stopped karl's f1 carrer.he wasn't the same driver after that crash.
@ShadowFenrir93 you´re right! it was about at the same speed, in the same place and the cars stopped in exactly the same position after the impact! That shows how much safer was F1 9 years after this..

its such a shame, imola almost killed barrichello, and did kill roland ratzenberger and senna then monaco came around and ended the career of wendlinger who was such a promising driver and montermini in the simtek nearly lost his life in the next race, martin brundle could have sustained serious head injurys at brazil earlier that year when he got hit in the head by the undeside of the car, 1994 also launched the career of the sports biggest cheater Guess who. such a bad year
I Know his career started in 91, but his reign as a champion started in 94 thats what i ment, he won the title because of the death of the real champion and illegal launch control
@AstraJOM Where?I don't remember...In any case he went into coma for the bad water barrers which didn't decrase the impact..Car were already extremely safe...
@leemyster2 Well, the tech changes made the '94 cars more difficult to drive. There were loads of bad testing accidents. So I don't think it's amazing at all. I think F1 in general became terribly complacent about circuit safety, not realising that the circuits could not cope with cars more likely to lose control. If there was a proper tyre barrier there, Wedlinger was more likely to have been okay.
fuck monaco....its for the manny bad nod good for a super race !!

rather like Perez, Button or Raikkonen's crash at the chicane.

1994 was a tragic year. Two deaths at the same race. Many injuries, lots of weird and brutal accidents during that season.

scary how similar this crash was to Perez's in 2011. Both were even racing for Sauber!!

Horrible season, just a horrible season in so many ways.
2 deaths, and many injuries.

The barrier has been moved further from the chicane since 94'. Still not far enough though.

Perez did the same thing with the same team on the same part of the track. Can any Sauber get around there???

in a modern F1 car, the only consequences probably would have been merely a major headache the day after.

@MetalFusion337
Nope. He hit his head on the barrier and was in a coma for about 2 weeks, but he survived. He was never the same driver afterwards though...
hammersandirons1001 1 year ago
there was much more in 1994:
J.J.Lehto broke neck in testing
Pedro Lamy broke both legs with a freak accident in testing at silverstone
Jean Alesi got injured, but cant remember what and when
And there was anothe injury with a test driver, but also cant remeber the deatails as well.
I was only 12 back then, but 1994 will i remember for ever

That was such a serious crash.Even in one of todays cars,a driver would very likely be in a bad condition afterwards.

Absolutely, the car's difference was big in such a way I thought I didn't have to mention it. Although I'm still convinced speed was another factor.
