@bsliceyellen, I'm with you on the merit pay. Quality teachers deserve a generous salary. But a quality teacher can be lost on a poor student. Being a quality student starts at home and it starts early. We should focus education around economy, especially on a micro scale as it relates directly to students and their families. Reinforcing parental responsibility to the education process and to instilling a sense of being an effective student into the children is key to improving education.

America lost that years ago. When they made it to where parents couldn't spank their kids for doing wrong. Kids now day can be told by their parent to do their homework or study. but if the kid says they don't want to and goes over to a friends house. What can a parent do? Nothing. Have to change the goverment. And obama wasn't that change. hell he would rather have you kill you babies before they are born, than to have to spank them to study.

sry, but there are plenty of ways to motivate kids without spanking them. taking away privileges is one. parents are not helpless and do not need the state to parent their kids for them. i refuse to believe this. I was never spanked and somehow figured out a way to finish high school and even go on to college. There are many ways to negatively reinforce bad behavior without spanking. "the rod" can be anything... get creative. that comment on killin babies is tasteless, offensive, and incorrect.

The country has been ing trying it your way for some time now, and has found that it isn't working. it's not the school system, it's the goverment stepping in on how parent can correct their kids.

livingeasi, not everyone uses the internet foolishly. Teaching kids how to avoid doing that is important because it is undeniable how powerful the internet can be for learning. I must learn a dozen new things a day, and I've been net active for 15+ years. There are plenty of good teachers, anyway. I'm not so sure about this spend it or lose it proposal, however. Sounds fishy.

I did not say everyone uses internet foolishly. I am simply saying he did not address the main issue. When you don't have a good educatinal system with good teachers, then no one teaches kids how to avoid the wrongdoings. I was not educated in Asia, and I'm going to become a dentist in two years. My sister goes to high school here in the U.S right now, and believe me, I never see her studying 1/10 of the time I used to study when I was in high school. The schools are devastated in the U.S.

To a large extent, I agree with "livingeasi." I teach science in a poor, rural school. Our country most lacks good teachers who motivate students with meaningful lessons. Merit pay has produced the greatest lawyers, athletes, surgeons and salespeople. Merit pay would do the same in education and produce the best teachers. Moreover, it would foster the best educated students and enable the US to climb back up the international school report card.

I agree with the energy efficiency of the buildings, but I don't get the rest. Putting new computers for the kids for what? so that they can surf myspace better? Giving the kids more access to the itnernet, so that they can watch porn with higher quality? Come on... Don't get me wrong, I love Obama, but I think this speach was cheap. The main problem is about training good teachers, not putting new computers in schools.

That was precisely my worry. More technology can't make up for complacent or incapable educators; it's the latter that's really important, and so the latter (e.g. teacher training programs, incentives for becoming a teacher) that we should be concentrating on.

Lets talk about building a school in the US.

Cost to build a school:

Prosper High School(near Dallas)at a cost of $96 million.

But only put $20.000 in learning ads in the whole school. Plus the cost of teachers. To much is spend on unwant and needed B/S. 90% of the building is art deco.

A total waste of tax dollars.

Besides he has no plan for the school system other how it's been run for years.
