Brook Benton sung the heck out of the title song! I never knew what this movie was about as a kid but I knew something was curiously intriguing. It held up well. Great movie and Jane Fonda was a little doll back in the day.
I am thrilled to find this amazing adaptation! Edward Dmytryk with any one of these actors would be plenty, but all of them together makes for a landmark of cinema. Thankyou !!!
@lindapittsburgh Hallie and Jo were lovers. I never knew either until watching as an adult. Jo seemed to be disenchanted with men by her remarks to her legless husband. Watch again closer and listen to the dialogue between Hallie and Jo again and you'll get it.
Fonda definitely steals film in this pedestrian example of Southern Gothic in the vein of Inge and Williams. Standout is Bass's credit design and Bernstein's main theme, though some of his underscore is rather trite (the fight scene in the Doll House). Kitty's father should have taught her the virtues of Grace, Attitude, and Faith; in others words, Geeeeeee Aaaaaaaa Efffffffffffff. I say that Fondly. Someone noticed John Anderson preaching to Marian Crane & typed him as the preacher here.
"You're crazy--always getting hungry like you was a millionaire". --Best line in the movie. Jane Fonda was great in this role. It's actually her best movie. Too bad she became a commie ass kisser.
This was off the hook! I was looking up John Fante's screen credits when I found this. What a gem. I'm curious about the novel now and how much of the dialog was Fante's style, or if it was just a perfect fit. The legless patriarch next to Jo's control and Halley's sexuality against Dove's dreams was killer!
So many woman roles in this movie. Rare in that era. How beautiful they were in all the range of ages. Jane Fonda dominates when she is on screen. So much resembling her father except in energy. Total opposites in that area. Quality acting wins out over plot.
this is a terrific movie! I was expecting a flawed but interesting film and boy was I wrong. As noaccount1 said below it's way over the top but so well made and so well acted that you can't help but love it !~ Thank you thank you thank you !

Barbara Stanwyck did a great job of portraying a bitter, old, worn out hag.

Terrific movie.
All the acting was good.
Laurence Harvey always made the actresses acting opposite him look good.

Laurence Harvey hated Capucine and gave her hell throughout the film!!!
Quite ironically BOTH stars won their roles becauseof their sexual - not acting "habilities"!!!
